Notes: Abstract Several 9-(2-R phenyl)xanthenediones have been synthesized and the x-ray diffraction structure for the 2-methylphenyl derivative (4b) has been determined. This compound crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P21/n, with a = 11.729 (3), b = 9.674 (3), c = 14.628 (4) Å, and β = 106.30°. It presents a partially hydrogenated xanthene system in distorted boat conformation for the heterocyclic central ring, and an almost ideal envelope conformation for the outer rings. The aromatic substituent at the ninth position is at 84° in angle with the xanthene system.

Notes: Freezing ensures the longterm preservation of fruits, but usually destroys cell compartmentation of fruit tissues, thereby increasing the probability of undesirable reactions. The use of cryoprotectants/cryostabilizers may reduce ice crystal damage by modifying the glass transition of frozen fruit or reducing freezable water content. The use of vacuum impregnation to introduce cryopreservatives into the fruits was tested. Apple samples were vacuum impregnated with concentrated grape musts and pectin solutions, by applying vacuum (50 mbars) for 5 min and afterwards restoring atmospheric pressure while fruit remained immersed. Most compositional, mechanical and structural properties improved as a result of vacuum impregnation.

Notes: The effect of mill type (Knife and Hammer mill) and screen size (500 and 800μ) on properties of masa and tortillas from two types of corn (dent and floury endosperm) were evaluated. The traditional process was a control. Particle size and starch damage were highest for knife mill with screen opening 500μ. Tortillas from dent corn had better quality than those from floury corn. Cutting force, tensile strength, and rollability of tortillas from extruded masa from dent corn hammer milled with 800μ screen, and those made with floury corn knife milled with 500μ screen, compared favorably with traditional tortillas. Overall quality score correlated with starch damage, adhesiveness and peak viscosity.

Notes: A peroxidase oxidizing Mn2+ (MnP) is described for the first time in Bjerkandera adusta, a fungus efficiently degrading xenobiotic compounds. The MnP appeared as two isoenzymes, which were purified to homogeneity together with two lignin peroxidases (LiP). Their N-terminal sequences were identical, but the MnP isoenzymes showed more basic isoelectric points and differences in amino acid composition and catalytic properties. The B. adusta LiP is similar to LiP from Phanerochaete chrysosporium. However, the interest of the MnP described here is related to its ability to catalyze Mn2+-mediated as well as Mn2+-independent reactions on aromatic compounds, which may be of use for applications in biotechnology and environmental technology.

Notes: The diversity, growth and symbiotic behaviour of symbiotically efficient alfalfa-nodulating rhizobia isolated from acid soils of Argentina and Uruguay were analysed. Partial sequencing of the 16S rDNA indicated that these isolates belong to Sinorhizobium meliloti species. IS-fingerprinting analysis revealed a high diversity among the isolates but some of them appear related to inoculant strains currently used in the region. The S. meliloti isolates showed a decreased growth rate with increasing acidity. They were, however, able to nodulate alfalfa at pH 5.6, but showed a delayed nodulation and decreased nodule number typical of S. meliloti strains. The impaired nodulation of S. meliloti at pH 5.6 did not result in a reduction of alfalfa dry matter production or nitrogen content. However, significant differences were observed for the relative symbiotic effectiveness of the strains analysed. LPU63 (Argentina) was the most effective among the isolates and exhibited a high nodulation competitiveness at both neutral and acidic pH. These results suggest that the isolate LPU63 may be a potential efficient inoculant for alfalfa in acid soils.

Notes: Abstract We present the analysis of a phase-shift sequence obtained from random transitions between periodic solutions of a biochemical dynamical model, formed by a system of three differential equations and which represent an instability-generating multienzymatic mechanism. The phase-shift series was studied in terms of Hurst’s rescaled range analysis. We found that the data were characterized by a Hurst exponent H = 0.69, which was clearly indicative of long-term trends. This result had a high significance level, as was confirmed through Monte Carlo simulations in which the data were scrambled in the series, destroying its original ordering. For these series we obtained a Hurst exponent which was consistent with the expectation of H = 0.5 for a random independent process. This clearly showed that, although the transitions between the periodic solutions were provoked randomly, the stochastic process obtained exhibited long-term persistence. The fractal dimension was also estimated and found to be consistent with the value of the Hurst exponent.

Notes: Abstract. Bone loss with aging may be due, at least in part, to inadequate bone formation. Moreover, the process of bone aging is known to follow a different pattern throughout the skeleton. In this study, we examined the cell proliferation rate (area under the cell growth curve, AUC) and the secretion of C-terminal type I procollagen (PICP), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and osteocalcin (OC) in primary cultures of osteoblastic cells from human trabecular bone. Osteoblastic cells were obtained for 168 donors (100 women and 68 men). Ninety-eight bone samples were obtained from subjects undergoing knee arthroplastia, 52 aged 50–70 years (64 ± 5) and 46 over age 70 (73 ± 2). Another 70 bone samples were obtained from subjects undergoing hip arthroplastia; 51 were 50–70 years old (64 ± 4) and 19 were over 70 (75 ± 5). Osteoblastic cells from the older donors had a lower proliferation rate and OC secretion than those from younger subjects. However, ALP secretion was higher in the former subjects, whereas PICP secretion was unchanged. Osteoblastic cells from hip had a lower proliferation rate than those from knee. PICP secretion was also lower and ALP secretion was higher in the former cells. In age-matched cell cultures, osteoblastic cells from the knee had higher proliferation rate and PICP secretion than osteoblastic cells from the hip. However, ALP secretion was lower in knee osteoblastic cells than those from hip only in the younger group. With aging, ALP secretion was found to increase in knee osteoblactic cells, whereas OC secretion decreased in osteoblastic cell cultures from the hip. Our findings suggest that bone loss with aging may be accounted for, at least in part, by a decreased osteoblastic cell proliferation and an increased osteoblastic maturation. In addition, our data indicate that these changes with aging do not occur similarly at different skeletal sites.

Notes: Abstract  AFLPs were used to characterize 67 different grapevine accessions from a collection of D.O.Ca. Rioja in Spain. A correct selection of primers and selective nucleotides allowed us to maximize the number of amplified fragments analyzed per reaction yielding an average of 100 per reaction, 49% of which were polymorphic. Based on the presence or absence of amplified fragments for each genotype resulting from a reaction with two primer combinations, we have established the genetic similarity between the different accessions in the collection. These results allowed us to resolve different genotypes maintained under the same name (homonyms) and to identify the same genotype under different names (synonyms) thus permitting the elimination of redundant germplasm. Furthermore, by providing information on more than 50 polymorphic loci per reaction, a few reactions were sufficient to identify distinct AFLP patterns characteristic of specific clones, with different agronomic and organoleptic features, belonging to the same cultivar. The possibility for clonal identification, shown here for grapevines, can have important implications in the protection and management of clonal selections.

Notes: Abstract A method based on neutron activation analysis was developed for the determination of fractions of milligrams of 2,4-D (2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid) in aqueous solution in laboratory tests. The indirect determination of 2,4-D was based on the quantification of chlorine,38Cl, produced by neutron activation. The range of application was 0.01–100 mg l−1. No loss of38Cl by chemical effects of the nuclear reaction was found. The advantages of the proposed method include high precision and sensitivity of determination. Results were compared with those obtained by UV-Vis spectrophotometry, where concentrations less than 1 mg·l−1 were not detected.

Notes: Abstract Bacteriological and physico-chemical parameters of 265 samples from 39 brands sold in 5-gallon plastic and glass bottles and 2-5 L plastic containers were analyzed to determine the quality of bottled water distributed in Mexico City. Tests included fecal and total coliform counts, alkalinity, total hardness, chloride, calcium and magnesium concentrations, pH and conductivity. Correlation and cluster analyses and ANOVA were carried out, and a comparison made of the averages with the maximum permissible levels established in the Official Mexican Norms. Concerning the investigated parameters no differences (p 〉 0.05) between the brands were found. Physico-chemical parameters were studied and all the samples were within the permissible limits. Most samples taken from the 5-gallon containers exceeded the maximum bacteriological limits. It was concluded that the bacteriological quality of the brands studied was extremely variable. Appropriate sanitary measures, should be established to control this aspect.
