Notes: Thin films of beta barium borate (β-BaB2O4) have been deposited by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition on fused silica, sapphire, platinum, and silicon substrates. Deposition conditions were optimized to reproducibly grow films with the c axis normal to the substrate. Second harmonic generation measurements have been made on selected films. The films grown on fused silica exhibit a maximum χeff(2) of 0.78 pm/V, and on single-crystal sapphire, 1.6 pm/V. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Discusses the current human resources environment in tourism at a strategic policy level, especially in the area of management level education. Describes a framework which is being used to study consultation between the makers of tourism and education policy at a national level. The framework advocates the development and implementation of a specific tourism education policy, to bring tourism education closer in line with national tourism policies. Concludes by outlining further research strategies.

Notes: Develops the view that human resource management is a central strategic and operational concern within the tourism and hospitality industries, with implications for quality and market positioning of tourism at local, regional and national levels. Suggests that all stakeholders, be they public or private sector, visitor or host community, would benefit from a close integration of human resource, labour market and education policies. Presents two studies which substantiate this view: one which generally examines policies for human resource development, and another which addresses the policy issues involved.

Notes: [Auszug] Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are generally accepted to be powered by the release of gravitational energy in a compact accretion disk surrounding a massive black hole,; such disks are also thought necessary to collimate the powerful radio jets seen in some AGN. The unifying classification ...

Notes: Abstract The performance of ARQ systems can be improved by combining current and prior transmissions at the receiver. Two techniques for combining outputs in a packet-based communication system are presented. In both techniques the fundamental unit of retransmission is a packet, and the fundamental unit of combining is a codeword. The techniques are analyzed for a bursty channel and a system that employs Reed–Solomon coding and bounded-distance errors-and-erasures decoding. Performance results show that the packet-combining schemes provide significant gains in throughput and reductions in error probability when compared with a system that does not employ combining.

Notes: Abstract We present the first VLBI observations of the compact source S1 in the radio jet of NGC 1068. Roughly 1 pc in length and 0.2 pc wide, S1 resolves into clumps aligned perpendicular to the local radio jet axis. The radio continuum emission arises from a hot (Te ~ 106 K), dense (ne ~ 106 cm-3) plasma, and the source of the radio emission is either thermal free-free emission or Thomson-reflected synchrotron emission. The clouds comprising S1 are opaque to soft X-radiation, and we therefore propose that S1 is the inner, ionized region, or ‘hot zone,’ of the obscuring medium surrounding the active nucleus. The covering fraction of the hot zone is small, Cf ⋦ 10%. Since the covering fraction of the dusty, obscuring medium is probably much larger, the obscuring disk must either flare or warp outside of the hot zone. That the radio jet and hot zone axes are perpendicular also suggests that the hot zone may be considered to trace the outermost extent of the accretion disk.

Notes: Abstract At the end of three days' spirited discussion of the type 2 Seyfert galaxy NGC 1068, what do we think we understand about this object? New observations -- particularly in the infrared and radio -- are helping to resolve old problems, while drawing attention to new ones. It appears that NGC 1068 is a relatively normal spiral galaxy in which large-scale gravitational disturbances are funneling matter into the nucleus. A collimated outflow disturbs the interstellar medium out to kiloparsec scales, but the nucleus itself is hidden behind an opaque screen. Radio observations have now pierced the screen, and suggest that at the center of it all, a 10-20 million solar mass black hole is accreting at close to its Eddington limit.

Notes: Abstract  Two natural clinopyroxene single crystals were investigated, an aegirine-augite (AEG) and a magnesian hedenbergite (HED). Both samples were carefully characterized by electron microprobe, X-ray diffraction, and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Magnetic susceptibility measurements of powdered samples reveal low temperature antiferromagnetic coupling and Curie-Weiss behaviour with T N =7.5(5) K, Θ P =−19(1) K for AEG, and T N =31(1) K, Θ P =+21(1) K for HED, respectively. Low temperature Mössbauer spectra exhibit relaxation phenomena. Magnetic susceptibility measurements of the single crystals show the direction of the magnetic moments to be lying within the a/c plane for both samples: 50(±2)° from a and 57(±2)° from c in AEG, and 45(±2)° from a and 60(±2)° from c in HED, respectively. The antiferromagnetic interchain interaction competes with the ferromagnetic intrachain interaction in both pyroxenes. In the magnesian hedenbergite a field induced magnetic transition is found. Its dependence on temperature, magnetic field and crystallographic direction is investigated and described.

Notes: Abstract An in situ single point two-color laser interferometer is used to monitor in real-time the thickness of thin transparent films during processing. The instantaneous change of film thickness is determined by comparing the measured laser reflection interference to that calculated by a model. The etch or deposition rates of the film are determined within 1–2 seconds. The film thickness is also determined in real-time from the phase difference of the reflected laser intensity between the two laser colors. Use of two-color laser interferometry improves the accuracy of the calculated etch or growth rates of the film considerably. Moreover, the two colors provide a clear distinction between film etching and deposition, which may often occur during the same process, and can not be determined by a single color interferometer. The uniformity of the film's etch or deposition rates across the substrate is monitored by an in situ full-wafer image interferometer. The combined use of these two sensors provide instantaneous information of the film thickness, etch or growth rates, as well as time averaged uniformity of the process rates. This diagnostic setup is very useful for process development and monitoring, which is also suitable for manufacturing environment, and can be used for real-time process control.
