Description:
A study on the seismic potential of the Greater Antilles (15°-24°Lat. N and 67°-85°Lon. W) is presented based on seismologic (historical and instrumental) and tectonic data. A geometric-based classification (magnitude, intensity and depth) of the rupture zones for the earthquakes is given taking into account the associated tectonic structures. Analysis included just spatial and energetic dimensions -not periodicity-as an alternative to prepare maps of maximum magnitude earthquakes. Five levels of magnitude were determined (Ms〈5, 5-6, 6-7, 7-8, 〉8). A classification based on depth was not done due to the lack of data in recorded events. A map of zones prone to events of such magnitude is presented. This material will be helpful fordetermining regional seismogenetic zones and for elaborating seismotectonic maps.
