    Notes: Ultra-short-pulse reflectometry is studied by means of the numerical integration of one- and two-dimensional full-wave equations for ordinary and extraordinary modes propagating in a plasma. The numerical calculations illustrate the use of the reflection of ultra-short-pulse microwaves as an effective probe of the density or magnetic profile in the presence of density or magnetic fluctuations in the plasma. Bragg resonance effects can be identified in the reflected signals, which give information on fluctuations. It is also demonstrated that ultra-short-pulse reflectometry can be used to perform correlation reflectometry measurements in which correlation lengths for density fluctuations are deduced from the observed cross-correlation function of phase shifts as a function of frequency. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract This paper begins with a brief statistical analysis to establish the significant contribution of cooking equipment fires to fire losses and injuries in Canadian homes. Due to lack of comprehensive fire loss data for Canadian homes, further analysis is focused on Alberta data. The most frequent ignition scenario, based on a top-down analysis of Alberta home fires, was the ignition of overheated cooking oil in pots, deep-fat fryers, or pans heated on stove tops. These fires also accounted for the majority of home fire injuries. Fire characteristics of cooking oils, which point to the importance of maintaining oil temperatures below their flash points, and thermostatically controlled deep-fat fryers as the best available solution to the problem are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Starting with the high functionalized trisilane SiClMe(SiCl2Me)2 and tetrasilane SiMe(SiCl2Me)3 several octa- and decasilane dendrimers containing directly neighboured branchings were prepared. In these compounds the 29Si NMR chemical shifts of the different silyl groups are shifted towards lower field compared with those of analogous groups in tetra- or hexasilanes. This observation is a helpful tool for the characterization of further dendritic oligomers by 29Si NMR.

    Notes: Abstract Parallelization promises to allow increasing performance demand from users of scientific computation codes. In this article we discuss implementation of parallelization techniques in industrial computation codes for applications in Fluid Mechanics (N3S) and Structural Mechanics (Code_ASTER). We outline the gains afforded by parallelization on a Cray C98 machine in production mode, using a single version of the program running in sequential or in parallel mode, with minimum modifications to the initial code. Parallelization is applied at the discretion of the user, for whom no specialist knowledge of this technique is assumed.

    Notes: Abstract Purpose. To predict the degree of crosslinking from formaldehyde-stressed hard gelatin capsules (HGCs) using near-infrared spectrophotometry (NIR). Methods. HGCs were exposed to a 150 ppb atmosphere of formaldehyde for 2.25,4.60,9.42, 16.0 and 24.0 hours. The capsules were filled with fresh amoxicillin, placed in a 90° conical reflector cone, and scanned in a NIR spectrophotometer. Principal component regression (PCR) was employed to analyze the spectra of the intact capsules. Dissolution profiles were then obtained for each experimental group. Results. The dissolution of amoxicillin from the capsules at pH 1.2 was found to decrease with increasing time of exposure to the formaldehyde atmosphere. A set of principal components (PCs) was formed by a linear combination of the absorbance values at each wavelength scanned. A good correlation was established (r2 = 0.963) when PC values from the NIR spectra of the HGCs were regressed against percentage of amoxicillin dissolved at 45 minutes, at pH 1.2. Water content of the capsules was found to be the largest determinant in the variation between HGC spectra at each exposure time. Conclusions. NIR spectrophotometry, combined with PCR, was successful at not only predicting dissolution of HGCs exposed to formaldehyde, but also at determining which wavelengths contributed most to spectral variation of these stressed HGCs.

    Notes: Abstract Retrotransposons are present in high copy number in many plant genomes. They show a considerable degree of sequence heterogeneity and insertional polymorphism, both within and between species. We describe here a polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based method which exploits this polymorphism for the generation of molecular markers in barley. The method produces amplified fragments containing a Bare–1-like retrotransposon long terminal repeat (LTR) sequence at one end and a flanking host restriction site at the other. The level of polymorphism is higher than that revealed by amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) in barley. Segregation data for 55 fragments, which were polymorphic in a doubled haploid barley population, were analysed alongside an existing framework of some 400 other markers. The markers showed a widespread distribution over the seven linkage groups, which is consistent with the distribution of the Bare–1 class of retrotransposons in the barley genome based on in situ hybridisation data. The potential applicability of this method to the mapping of other multicopy sequences in plants is discussed.
