Notes: The effect of Zr additions on the microstructure and magnetic properties of melt-spun Sm2Fe(15.5−x)ZrxAl1.5C1.5 alloys has been systematically studied. The additions of Zr to Sm2(Fe,Al,Zr)17C1.5 alloys result in the precipitation of a ZrC compound within intergranular regions. It is found that the Zr addition is helpful in eliminating free iron dendrites, and effective on inhibiting grain growth during annealing. The x-ray diffraction analysis and transmission electron microscopy observation show that annealed ribbons with the Zr addition consist of a multiphase of the 2:17-type carbide, α-Fe and ZrC compound with an average grain size of about 25–35 nm. A remanence of up to 55 emu/g along with a coercivity of up to 11.6 kOe is obtained for Sm2Fe15.3Zr0.2Al1.5C1.5 ribbons annealed at 750 °C for 30 min. It is suggested that the high coercivity and remanence may be attributed to the Zr addition. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Sm2Fe15.5Si1.5C1.5 samples with a rhombohedral Th2Zn17-type structure have been prepared by high frequency induction melting. The crystallization, crystal structure, and magnetic properties of melt-spun and annealed ribbons have been studied by means of x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, differential thermal analysis, and magnetic measurements. The results show that the as-spun ribbons consist mainly of an amorphous phase, and that they crystallize in two steps. Upon annealing at 660 °C the ribbons form a metastable phase of the TbCu7-type and an α-Fe phase. Upon further annealing above 750 °C the metastable phase transforms to a 2:17-type phase coexisting with α-Fe. A saturation magnetization of up to 108 emu/g with a coercivity of up to 3.5 kOe is obtained in the ribbon annealed at 660 °C for 30 min. However, the reduced remanence of the ribbon σr/σs is only 0.6 and its hysteresis loop exhibits two independent magnetic components. Additionally, the grain size of the ribbons obtained by annealing at or above 660 °C for 30 min is much larger than the single domain size. Thus, it appears that there is no significant exchange coupling between the hard and soft magnetic phases of the ribbons. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Schottky-type light emitting devices have been fabricated on Er-oxide doped Si layers grown by molecular beam epitaxy, in order to study the light emission process of Er-doped Si structures. By applying a reverse bias on the Schottky junction, Er ions incorporated within the depletion layer can be electrically excited via a hot electron impact process. Rather intense electroluminescence (EL) at a wavelength of 1.54 μm has been observed at room temperature. The optoelectronic properties of the devices have been characterized by both input-power dependent and temperature dependent EL measurements. An activation energy value of ∼160 meV responsible for luminescence thermal quenching has been obtained. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The optical properties of the regular, 3-nm-wide hexagonal channels of the mesoporous silica molecular sieve (MCM–41) containing C60 are reported. Besides an intensive photoluminescence response at 642 nm from confined C60, a more intensive photoluminescence at 484 nm has been observed, which is considered to result from the passivation of silica zeolite with C60. Our studies indicate that both the properties of guest and host can be modified due to the interaction at the interface of them. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Er, together with oxygen or fluorine as co-dopants, has been incorporated into Si during molecular beam epitaxial growth using co-evaporation of Si and Er containing compounds. The Er doping concentration using both Er2O3 and ErF3 can reach a level of ∼5×1019 cm−3 without precipitation, which is at least one order of magnitude higher than a previously reported solid solubility limit for Er in Si. Growth, structural, and luminescence characterization of these Er/O and Er/F doped Si samples are reported. In particular, 1.54 μm electroluminescence has been observed from Er/O doped Si layers at room temperature through hot electron impact excitation. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Magnetic entropy change of La0.75Ca0.25MnO3 with different particle size has been investigated. Magnetic entropy change ∼4.7 J/kg K larger than that of Gd has been observed at 224 K under a magnetic field of 1.5 T in comparatively big particles. This phenomenon of large magnetic entropy change indicates that the perovskite-type manganese oxides have potential applications for magnetic refrigerants in high temperature.© 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Dissipation anisotropy of a highly c-axis-oriented (Bi,Pb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3Ox silver-sheathed tape in the vicinity of Tc(T/Tc〉0.9) has been investigated by measuring the dependence of the magnetoresistance on the applied field, the temperature and the angle (θ) between the magnetic field direction and the tape surface. The results show that the dissipation anisotropy increases with the increase of the field and the temperature. It is found that the dissipation is only related to the magnetic field component perpendicular to the tape surface (c-axis component), i.e., R(H,θ)=R(Hsinθ). The experimental results can be accounted for in terms of the easy motion of two-dimensional (2D) pancake vortices along the CuO2 planes. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We present the electrical properties of polycrystalline La0.7−xPrxSr0.3MnO3 in which the average ionic radius of the A site 〈rA〉 is systematically varied while keeping the carrier concentration fixed. Below the Curie temperature Tc, the spin-disorder scattering process has been regarded to play an important role in the resistivity. With decreasing 〈rA〉, the structure transition from rhombohedral to orthorhombic phase accompanied with the sharp increase in resistivity at Tc and the increase of the activation energies has been observed. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Subsurface brines in the Sichuan Basin occur within sedimentary rocks ranging in age from Sinian to Cretaceous, especially within rocks of Triassic age. The chemical and isotopic compositions of the brines and general geological considerations suggest that the Sichuan Basin brines are derived from waters of different origin. Water in brines from Upper Cretaceous clastic reservoirs in Anren, and from basin margin aquifers of Lower Jurassic, Triassic, and Cambrian age are modern meteoric in origin. Salinity in these brines is from dissolution of salt-bearing formations. Lower Jurassic and Upper Triassic clastic aquifers contain a mixture of meteoric water and brines from older rocks based on isotopic data. Brines in Middle and Lower Triassic carbonate aquifers originated from sea water and are residual brines left after evaporite precipitation. Brines from the Upper Sinian carbonate aquifer in Weiyuan originated from sea water mixed with magmatic waters.

Notes: Catfish (mean body weight 0.87 kg) treated with oxytetracycline (OTC) at 150.0 mg/kg body weight for 10 days and slaughtered 18 hr after last feeding had higher OTC residue levels than those receiving OTC at 37.5 or 75.0 mg/kg. Individual differences in feed uptake and metabolism of OTC among catfish might contribute to variability in residue. Baking and smoking at 190°C were more effective in reducing OTC residues than frying. The reduction appeared to be related to the final temperature reached and duration of cooking. Results confirmed that common cooking procedures may not completely degrade OTC in catfish fillets.
