Notes: Abstract By 1996 an inventory of Mexican cladocerans hadrecorded 48 species of which 22 belonged toChydoridae, Macrothricidae and Ilyocryptidae.Unfortunately, most of the surveys were made beforeresearchers knew that these crustaceans are notentirely cosmopolitan. For this reason and the lack ofdeposited type material, many of these records aredoubtful and need detailed analyses. In this study, material from 18 water bodies located in theNeovolcanic Province of Mexico is analyzed andcompared with the literature. Also, males of Camptocercus dadayi Stingelin and Leydigialeydigi (Schoedler) and new records Eurycercus longirostris Hann and Biaperturaintermedia (Sars) are described. Half of thetotal number of species recorded are American endemicsand represents a mixture of the North and SouthAmerican fauna, suggesting that Mexico constitutes atransition between Nearctic and Neotropicalzones.

Notes: Polarization-dependent Fe K-edge x-ray absorption fine structure measurements of an Al/Fe/Al(001) trilayer reveal a small tetragonal distortion of the Fe sites with c=2.863 Å (normal to the film plane) and a=2.874 Å (in the film plane). This tetragonal distortion is consistent with the formation of Fe1−xAlx alloys in the vicinity of the roughened Fe–Al trilayer interfaces, and agrees with grazing incidence x-ray reflectivity and magnetometry measurements of the trilayer. The deduced alloyed/roughened interfacial regions are the likely source of Fe "loose spins" as recently suggested by Slonczewki's biquadratic coupling model for the epitaxial Fe/Al/Fe system. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: This work demonstrates the feasibility of using low-energy Ar ion beam assist bombardment of permalloy (Py=Ni81Fe19) multilayers during growth to selectively manipulate multilayer component coercivity, with minimal degradation of saturation magnetization characteristics. The enhanced giant magnetoresistance characteristics of ion beam sputtered multilayers with thin "Co-dusting" is also reported. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A review of the perturbation theory to calculate the wave propagation constant for a waveguide containing a plasma cylinder of small radius on its axis is presented. The wave propagation constant is important for implementing some diagnostic techniques. In the present paper, this constant for a column of a cold, magnetoactive plasma of small radius is calculated, assuming that the distribution of electron density in the plasma is a parabolic function of the radius, and it is shown that this result simplifies the determination of the average plasma density. Moreover, it is shown that for the particular case of an H11 mode, the result obtained at the electron cyclotron resonance, can be used to gauge the waveguide as well as to describe a simplified model of the plasma heating in an electron cyclotron resonance plasma source. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The lipid composition of different muscular areas (dorsal, ventral, subcutaneous, periosteum) and organs (liver, gall bladder, testes) of a gempylid fish Ruvettus pretiosus was examined. Waxes were the main lipid fraction in muscular areas, while the liver and testes were quite enriched in triglycerides and phospholipids. Oleic acid and fatty acids of n-3 family were the most frequently found in total lipids.

Notes: Abstract— Since the degradation effect due to environment on the cracking of materials depends on time, the loading rate has an important influence on the parameters that characterise its behaviour. This work analyses the effect of loading rate on the resistance to hydrogen induced cracking (HIC) of two microailoyed steels, E690 and E500. Monotonic loading tests were performed on precracked CT samples using a slow strain rate machine. Tests were done under constant displacement rate varying from 4.1 × 10–7 m/s to 8.2 × 10–10m/s on the two steels that were cathodically charged with hydrogen at different current densities (1, 5 and 10 mA/cm2) to obtain different hydrogen concentration levels inside the material.Based on an analytical study, the initiation conditions for cracking as well as the crack propagation rates were determined in each case, and analysed as a function of K1. An extensive fractographic SEM study has been performed to help in the analysis of the different zones of behaviour obtained as an effect of loading rate, for each material and environmental condition used.

Notes: In Spain the minimum wage appears to have no significant employment-reducing effect for workers over 18. For the under 18s, however, minimum wages and employment are negatively related. The government should consider lowering the minimum wage for younger workers.

Notes: The role in virulence of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae urease activity was investigated. A urease-negative mutant was isolated following transposon mutagenesis with a mini-Tn10 derivative. Both the parent strain and the urease-negative mutant exhibited identical LD50 values in a murine infection model. Pig challenge confirmed that the urease-negative mutant was fully virulent, since experimental inoculation with 5×107 colony forming units resulted in an acute disease indistinguishable from that produced by the wild-type strain at the same dose. Our results demonstrate that urease activity is not required for the development of acute pleuropneumonia.

Notes: Sorbitol, together with sucrose and starch, is a major final product of photosynthesis in most species of the Rosaceae. However, little is known concerning the factors affecting the carbon fluxes into these three carbohydrates. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of net photosynthetic CO2 assimilation rate (NAR) on primary carbon partitioning between sorbitol, sucrose, starch and other metabolites, and on the kinetic pattern of labelling in mature leaves of peach (Prunus persica [L.] Batsch). A pulse-chase labelling experiment was conducted on a group of peach seedlings showing a range of NAR's that were obtained by using five photosynthetic photon flux density treatments. Mature leaves undergoing one of these treatments were subjected to a 4-min pulse of 14CO2 followed by a 2- to 120-min chase under 12CO2. The radioactivity in lipids, proteins and in a residual nonsoluble fraction was negligible. After a 2-min chase the organic ions were strongly labelled, accounting for up to 40% of the total incorporated radioactivity at NAR's below 10.4 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1. After a 30-min chase, most label was found in sorbitol, sucrose and starch with very little radioactivity in the ionic fractions. The analysis of the partitioning of the newly-fixed carbon showed that at low NAR the 14C flux was mostly into sorbitol rather than into sucrose (ratio=2.6) or starch. When the NAR was lower than 6.1 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1, starch was lightly labelled. As the NAR increased above 10.4 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1 the 14CO2 diverted into starch increased dramatically. This study demonstrates that at low NAR's the newly-fixed CO2 is mainly used for sorbitol synthesis. However, as NAR increases, the participation of sucrose and starch in CO2 partitioning are favoured. These results support the hypothesis that primary carbon partitioning depends on photosynthetic rate.
