    Description: Two new genera of Upper Silurian stromatoporoids in order Actinostromatida are described. Genus Bicolumnostratum Stock, with type species B. micum (Bogoyavlenskaya), is characterized by two kinds of pillars and nonaligned colliculi, and is assigned to family Actinostromatidae. Genus Acosmostroma Stock, with type species A. ataxium Stock new species, contains irregular micropillars and microcolliculi, and is assigned to family Densastromatidae. Two additional new species are Acosmostroma glascoense Stock and A.? cobleskillense Stock. A fourth species is A. tenuissimum (Parks). Bicolumnostratum is known from Ludlow- and Pridoli-age strata, whereas the occurrences of Acosmostroma are strictly Pridoli in age.

    Notes: A W/Si multilayer was used to determine the degree of circular polarization of the soft x-ray radiation of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility helical undulator HELIOS I. The multilayer, manufactured by vapor deposition serves as a wideband tunable polarization analyzer in the photon energy range from 520 to 930 eV. The characterization of the multilayer's analyzing power, varying from 0.82 to 0.25 for these energies, indicates that it operates close to its calculated specifications. The lack of phase-shifters applicable in this energy range was overcome by a detailed analysis of the unpolarized background identified as radiation from the magnetic lattice. In this way, the degree of circular polarization of HELIOS I was determined to exceed 0.85 for hν〉685 eV. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The high cost of providing formal training to displaced workers, combined with the lack of consistent evidence to support training program effectiveness, has prompted researchers and policy makers to suggest that formal training be offered only to select groups of displaced workers. This paper reviews theoretical and empirical outcomes suggesting that displaced workers who are likely to switch industries as a result of displacement are one group toward which formal training could be targeted. Given this motivation, the paper goes on to examine the empirical framework for such targeting. Estimates presented indicate that workers displaced from industries that employ only a small fraction of their local labor force are more likely to switch industries after displacement. In addition, the relative importance of workers' pre-displacement industries in their local labor markets is a stronger predictor of industry switching than other commonly used measures of local labor market conditions.

    Notes: Multimodality is a powerful concept for dealing with dialogue cohesion in a human–computer natural language (NL)-centered system. This work is a modest step toward more effective exploitation of the potentially large bandwidth of communication provided by this situation. The relations between exploration, navigation, and NL-based communication are discussed in general and with reference to two prototypes. Light cognitive load feedback and direct manipulation are proposed so that user and system can cooperate in mutually establishing the structure of the ongoing dialogue. The main points are: (i) use of an appropriate dialogue structure to constrain inference in the anaphora resolution process; (ii) use of a graphical representation of the structure, to limit the problem of opacity; (iii) allowance for the possibility of direct manipulation on this representation, to avoid the necessity of operating linguistically at the metalevel. The context of the work is within NL-centered multimodal information access systems, in which basic entities are pairs (most commonly question and answer). A dialogue model is provided by a modified version of the centering model; it is both sufficiently simple to be displayed in an intuitive fashion on the screen, and sufficiently powerful to give accurate results. An extension of the discourse model, oriented to the treatment of deixis, is also proposed. Finally, steps toward an overall approach to the integration of navigational and mediated aspects of interaction are discussed.

    Notes: A mixed quantum-classical description of nonadiabatic photoreactions such as internal conversion and electron transfer is outlined. In particular the validity and limitations of Tully's surface-hopping (SH) model [J. Chem. Phys. 93, 1061 (1990)] is investigated in the case of photoinduced relaxation processes which are triggered by a multidimensional conical intersection (or avoided crossing) of two potential-energy surfaces. Detailed numerical studies are presented, adopting (i) a three-mode model of the S2→S1 internal-conversion process in pyrazine, (ii) a multimode model of ultrafast intramolecular electron-transfer, (iii) a model exhibiting nonadiabatic photoisomerization dynamics, and (iv) various spin-boson-type models with an Ohmic bath for the description of electron-transfer in solution. The SH simulations are compared to exact quantum-mechanical calculations as well as to results obtained by an alternative mixed quantum-classical description, that is, the self-consistent classical-path method. In all cases, the SH data are shown to reproduce the quantum results at least qualitatively; in some cases the SH results are in quantitative agreement with the complex electronic and vibrational relaxation dynamics exhibited by the quantum calculations. Depending on the physical situation under consideration, either the SH or the self-consistent classical-path method was found to be superior. The characteristic features of a mixed quantum-classical description of photoinduced bound-state dynamics (e.g., the start of the trajectories on a diabatic electronic potential-energy surface, high chance of a trajectory undergoing multiple electronic transitions) as well as the specific problems of the SH approach are discussed in some detail. In particular, the focus is on the ability of a method to account for the branching of trajectories, to correctly describe the electronic phase coherence and the vibrational motion on coupled potential-energy surfaces, and to obey the principle of microreversibility. Furthermore, an alternative way to handle classically forbidden electronic transitions is proposed, which is shown to lead to significantly better results than the usual procedure. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A mixed quantum-classical formulation of nonadiabatic molecular processes is outlined. Based on a recently introduced mapping formalism [Stock and Thoss, Phys. Rev. Lett. 78, 578 (1997)], the formulation employs a quantum-mechanically exact mapping of discrete electronic states onto continuous variables, thus describing the dynamics of both electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom by continuous variables. It is shown that the classical evaluation of the mapping formalism results in a self-consistent description of electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom, which treats both types of dynamical variables in a completely equivalent way. The applicability of the approach is thus solely determined by the validity of the classical approximation and does not rest on additional assumptions such as the ad hoc combination of classical and quantum-mechanical theories. The observation of unrestricted flow of zero-point energy in the electronic degrees of freedom indicates the limits of the classical approximation. However, it is shown that this problem can virtually be removed by restricting the classically accessible phase-space. Adopting a multidimensional model of the internal-conversion process in the benzene cation, it is demonstrated that the classical mapping approach is able to account for the branching of classical trajectories in the presence of multiple surface crossings. The classical simulations are found to match the exact quantum-mechanical reference calculations quite accurately. The virtues and limitations of various mixed quantum-classical descriptions are discussed by comparing the mapping approach to the classical-path, the classical electron-analog, and the surface-hopping formulation, respectively. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In the Escherichia coli chemotaxis system, a family of chemoreceptors in the cytoplasmic membrane binds stimulatory ligands and regulates the activity of an associated histidine kinase CheA to modulate swimming behaviour and thereby cause a net migration towards attractants and away from repellents. The chemoreceptors themselves have been shown to be predominantly dimeric, but in the presence of the kinase CheA plus an adapter protein, CheW, much higher order structures have been observed. Recent results indicate that transmembrane signalling occurs within receptor clusters rather than through isolated dimers. We propose that the mechanism involves receptor arrays where binding of ligands at the outside surface of the membrane affects lateral packing interactions that cause perturbations in the organization of the signalling array at the opposing surface of the membrane. Results with receptor chimeras as well as findings with tyrosine kinase receptors suggest that this mechanism may represent a common theme in membrane receptor function.

    Notes: Understanding the physical bases of a cracked sample’s macroscopic response to applied loading, e.g. fatigue crack closure, requires non-destructive, microscopic quantification of the crack face separations as a function of applied load. Ideally, these measurements should cover the entire crack face. Non-destructive sectioning with high resolution X-ray computed tomography has been used for in situ observations of the crack faces under applied load in samples of Al–Li 2090, and in this paper, the crack openings that were measured in the interior of the sample are related to crack face geometry and to changes in the slope of load–displacement curves. The implications of these results are discussed for physically based crack closure modelling.
