Notes: This letter presents a simple approach to characterize process-induced charging damage in the gate oxide of metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) devices. The method uses the monitoring of voltage transients during constant-current stress performed on plasma-damaged and reference devices. The difference in transients allows direct extraction of the amount of electron traps created in the oxide by charging currents during processing. The method is verified by experimental simulation and applied to extract the density of electron traps introduced in the oxide by process-induced charging. This technique is a fast and efficient approach to assess device damage and extract physical parameters of generated traps which can be used later for lifetime prediction in reliability simulators. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The letter reports an observation of a new degradation mechanism in thermal silicon dioxide layers on silicon, namely generation of hole traps under high-field stressing of metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) structure. Excess hole trapping due to newly generated hole traps is observed by substrate hot-hole injection in 9 nm oxide of p-channel MOS transistors after high-field Fowler-Nordheim stress followed by standard post-metallization annealing in nitrogen. The concentration of generated traps has a weak stress-polarity dependence and increases with electron fluence during degrading stress. Relaxation behavior under switching oxide fields indicates that the nature of hole trapping sites is different from anomalous positive charge centers. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The title compound contains two benzimidazole nitrogens and one thioether sulfur atom, which are potential sites for metal ion binding. Both the benzimidazole nitrogens of the molecule are protonated. The benzimidazole rings are almost parallel to each other, the dihedral angle being 6.9(1)°. The C−S−C bond angle is 100.6(2)° and the C−S−C−C torsion angles are −75.9(3)° and −80.6(3)°, leading to gauche conformation which is one of the favored conformations in the crystalline state of simple monothioethers.

Notes: Abstract Mesoporous MCM-41 is found to promote alkylation of naphthalene by alcohols. In addition to the preferred branched side chain productsn-alkylated product is also observed in the case of propylation of naphthalene.

Notes: Abstract The aging and inservice degradation of industrial equipment has underscored a need for efficient and reliable evaluation of the suitability of such equipment for continued service. The structural components of traditional energy production facilities, such as fossil- and nuclear-fueled electric power plants, are prime examples of aging equipment for which integrity during extended service is of major concern. The paper describes a recently developed nondisruptive miniature material sample removal and test approach that is being applied to a range of operating electric power plant components from turbine generators to pressure vessels, and to petrochemical plant reactor vessels for inservice integrity assessment. Thein situ removal of a thin wafer-like sample (less than 25 mm in diameter and 2.5 mm in thickness) from the component surface generally has no effect on component integrity. The miniature specimen small punch (disk bend) test has been developed to mechanically test the as-removed material, and is being used to estimate the material tensile behavior and fracture properties (ductile-to-brittle transition temperature and fracture toughness) required for a reliable component integrity assessment.

Notes: Abstract Tert-butyl hydroperoxide induced swelling of freshly isolated rat liver mitochondria was inhibited by butylated hydroxytoluene, butylated hydroxyanisole and α-tocopherol by acting at the initial phase. EDTA was more effective than EGTA in reducing the initial swelling and so were desferal and bipyrridyl. Spermine, an allosteric activator of calcium uptake, enhanced swelling whereas lanthanum and ruthenium red, the Ca2+ uniport blockers, reduced it. Inhibition of phospholipase A2 by dibucaine and Ca2+ activated proteases by antipain and leupeptin also reduced t-BHP induced swelling. The data indicate that peroxidative mitochondrial swelling involves an iron mediated initial rapid phase and a subsequent calcium dependent propagation phase.

Notes: Abstract. Pyramid broadcasting is a new way of giving video-on-demand service on a metropolitan scale. We multiplex the most frequently requested movies on the network, gaining a radical improvement in access time and bandwidth use. This is achieved by using storage at the receiving end. As the available bandwidth increases, the improvement in access time is exponential instead of linear as in conventional broadcasting. The larger the bandwidth of the network is, the better gain in the access time due to pyramid broadcasting. As the access-time requirement decreases, the bandwidth in conventional broadcasting increases linearly, while the bandwidth in pyramid broadcasting increases only logarithmically. We provide analytical and experimental evaluations of pyramid broadcasting based on its implementation on an Ethernet LAN.
