    Notes: The D-dimensional Coulomb system serves as a starting point for generating generalized atomic shells. These shells are ordered according to a generalized Madelung rule in D dimensions. This rule together with an Aufbau Prinzip is applied to produce a D-dimensional periodic table. A model is developed to rationalize the ordering of the shells predicted by the generalized Madelung rule. This model is based on the introduction of a Hamiltonian, invariant under the q-deformed algebra Uq(so(D)), that breaks down the SO(D + 1) dynamical symmetry of the hydrogen atom in D dimensions. The D = 2 case (Flatland) is investigated in some detail. It is shown that the neutral atoms and the (moderately) positive ions correspond to the values q = 0.8 and q = 1, respectively, of the deformation parameter q. © John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Position and momentum space plots are presented for localized molecular orbitals in hydrocarbons, boranes, a carborane, and two octahedral transition metal complexes. The p-space representation proves to be valuable for visualizing such orbitals since it highlights the differences in their character from one molecule to another. Factors influencing the form of the orbitals in p space, including the oscillatory behavior caused by contributions to an orbital from more than one center, are examined in detail. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: A discussion is presented for possible diamond-lattice-based structures containing holes that can be filled with metal atoms or ions. To allow the formation of coordinative bonds to the metal, some carbon atoms should be replaced by heteroatoms (with nitrogen preferred, but in some cases oxygen or other heteroatoms may be considered). Two types of holes that may lead to the formation of coordinative bonds are discussed in detail: tetrahedral holes for four such bonds and quasi-octahedral holes for six such bonds. In turn, when suitably arranged in a translationally symmetric manner, these holes may resemble open or closed pores in foams; when they are open, the “channels” may lead to interesting properties with regard to metallic conductivity or superconductivity. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: The virial field V(r) is defined by the local statement of the quantum mechanical virial theorem, as the trace of the Schrödinger stress tensor. This field defines the electronic potential energy density of an electron at r and integrates to minus twice the electronic kinetic energy. It is the most short-ranged description possible of the local electronic potential energy and it exhibits the same transferable behavior over bounded regions of real space (corresponding to the functional groups of chemistry) as does ρ(r). This article establishes a structural homeomorphism between -V(r) and ρ(r), showing that the two fields are homeomorphic over all of the nuclear configuration space. The stable or unstable structure defined by the gradient vector field Δρ(r; X) for any configuration X of the nuclei can be placed in a one-to-one correspondence with a structure defined by the field -ΔV(r; X′). In particular, a molecular graph for ρ(r) defining a molecular structure is mirrored by a corresponding virial graph for V(r) and the lines of maximum density linking bonded nuclei in the former field are matched by a set of lines of maximally negative potential energy density in the latter. The homeomorphism is also geometrically faithful, an equilibrium geometry in general, exhibiting equivalent structures in the two fields. The demonstration that the virial field, whose integrated value equals twice the total energy, is essentially just a locally scaled version of the electron density is suggestive of possible new approaches in density functional theory. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Many quantum mechanical problems are separable in one or several of the standard classifications of general coordinate systems. The associated solution is most conveniently evaluated using expansions in Lamé wave functions. We give here some preliminary numerical results displaying the continuous distortion of an s-, p-, and d-wave spherical harmonic. The results indicate rather surprising features which may be useful in general quantum mechanical contexts. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: With a view to elucidate and develop a model for the mechanism of conduction in doped transpolyacetylene (t-PA), we have carried out an ab initio study of the ground and excited state of transoctatetraene in the presence of an iodine atom. While the ground state is calculated as characterized by a slightly distorted alternating bond geometry, with iodine remaining largely neutral on top of the plane of the polyene near roughly the midpoint of the chain axis, the excited state has the geometry characterized by a solitonic distortion with the octatetraene carrying a net positive charge close to 0.7e. The bandgap [highest occupied to lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO(SINGLEBOND)LUMO) gap] is computed to be nearly 0.8 eV. Moreover, the excited-state energy appears very insensitive to the position of iodine along the axis of the octatetraene chain. As an extension of an earlier calculation on the transport of charge by a charged soliton, a similar calculation is performed on a C8H10 +“kink” traveling along the backbone of C12H14+, yielding very similar results. A computer code has been developed to compute the transport velocity of charge based on the above model and can be used in conjunction with the GAMESS program package. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Self-consistent electronic structure calculations of δ-doped quantum wells (QW) in the presence of in-plane magnetic fields B up to 20 Tesla are carried out within the frameworks of the effective mass and the local density approximations. QWs composed of two layers of Ga1-xA1xAs, separated by a layer of GaAs with a donor δ-doped sheet in the center, are considered. The width of the GaAs layer was varied from 100 to 400 Å. It is shown that the diamagnetic shift increases with the increasing of the GaAs QW width. The magnetic field induces remarkable changes in the energy dispersions of electrons and holes, along an in-plane direction perpendicular to B. The most striking effect occurs in the nature of the band gap of these systems. We found that the valence band displays a double-maximum character instead of a single maximum at the center of the Brillouin zone. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: We employ a dynamical configuration interaction approach to study the transport of charge along the polyacetylene chain axis when placed in an external electric field. The steady-state wave function in this approach is constructed as a linear combination of solitonic wave functions weighted by nuclear vibrational functions. We retain the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, i.e., we neglect the terms involving the differentiation of the electronic configurations with respect to the nuclear coordinates. We also use basis functions that follow the nuclei. A solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation in terms of the wave functions of the above kind is obtained, leading to a closed formula for estimating mobilities of the soliton transport. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
