    Notes: Abstract.  A mathematical model for the delivery of drug directly to the macrophages by using the phagocytosis of senescent red blood cells is proposed. The model is based on the following assumption: At time t=0 a preassigned red blood cell population n(0, a)=φ(a), a〉0, loaded by the drug, is injected in the blood circulation. Among the cells of that population only those with an age a≧ā (ā=120 days) will be phagocytosed by macrophages. Of course, the lifetime of the drug must be higher than ā. Within the red blood cells it cannot be metabolized, neither can it diffuse through their membranes. The emphasis of the paper is on the mathematical properties and on the formulation of the control problem.

    Notes: Abstract. cDNA encoding the adhesive protein of the mussel Mytilus coruscus (Mcfp1) was isolated. The coding region encoded 848 amino acids (a.a.) comprising the 20-a.a. signal peptide, the 21-a.a. nonrepetitive linker, and the 805-a.a. repetitive domain. Although the first 204 nucleotides and the 3′-untranslated region of Mcfp1 cDNA were homologous to corresponding parts of M. galloprovincialis adhesive protein (Mgfp1) cDNA, the other parts diverged. The representative repeat motif of the repetitive domain, YKPK(I/P)(S/T)YPP(T/S), was similar but slightly different from the repeat motif of Mgfp1. The codon usage patterns for the same amino acids were different in different positions of the decapeptide motif. Almost identical nucleotide sequences encoding the two to 13 repeats appeared several times in the repetitive region, which suggests that the adhesive protein genes of mussels have evolved through the duplication of these repeat units.

    Notes: Abstract The method of designing a corrugated optical waveguide filter is proposed to yield an arbitrary spectral profile of the reflection coefficient. It gives the functional dependence of the corrugation depth on distance along the wave propagation direction. The basis of the theory of the method is a combination of the effective index approach and the Fourier transformation technique. It represents the spectral profile of the reflection coefficient approximately to Fourier transformation of the spatial profile of the effective refractive index. Examples are presented to illustrate how to apply the technique.

    Notes: Abstract A novel TE-TM mode converter using optically active polymer: poly-1-menthylmethacrylate (PMtMA) was studied theoretically and experimentally. In a three-layered slab waveguide consisting of the PMtMA core layer on a fused quartz substrate, a low-loss TE0-TM0 mode conversion with an efficiency of 60 to 70% was easily obtained for the first time at a wavelength of 441.6 nm. The method to achieve a phase-matched operation of this polymer TE-TM mode converter was also discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Two-dimensional rotational temperature measurement was performed in a stable combustion flame of premixed butane and oxygen using multiline laser induced fluorescence (LIF) of nitric oxide molecules. Multiple rotational absorption lines of A2∑+Π;X2II(0,0) Q1 and Q2 lines were excited by laser light around 226 nm, and the LIF signal was observed by an image-intensified digital camera. Temperature was determined through least squares fitting correlation between LIF intensity and excitation rotational quantum number for the Boltzmann distribution function. The measured LIF intensity was approximated by the Boltzmann distribution with good accuracy, and the temperature obtained was between 500 K and 1800 K for the test flame. The measuring error of the temperature was evaluated and found to be 80 K, which corresponded to 8% of the measured fluorescence intensity. The two-line LIF scheme was evaluated by different pairs of excitation lines (Q1(31.5)/Q1(16.5) and Q1(18.5)/Q1(16.5)) for comparison with the multiline LIF approach. Temperature which was obtained by two-line LIF scheme corresponded well with multiline LIF results for Q1(31.5)/Q1(16.5) excitation. However, for Q1(18.5)/Q1(16.5) excitation, the obtained temperature did not agree with the multiline LIF result because the population of rotational states J=18.5 and J=16.5 is similar at high temperatures. We found that two-line LIF temperature measurement was reliable when excitation lines were suitably selected.

    Notes: Abstract We have developed an Agrobacterium -mediated transformation system for commercial Begonia species. The leaf explants of Begonia semperflorens, Begonia x hiemalis and B. tuberhybrida were inoculated with Agrobacterium tumefaciens LBA4404 harboring a binary vector pBI121 which contains rolA, B and C genes of an agropine type Ri plasmid (pRiA4b). Kanamycin resistant shoots of B. tuberhybrida were obtained on MS agar medium supplemented with 0.1 mg/l NAA, 0.5 mg/l BA, 500 mg/l claforan and 100 mg/l kanamycin. These shoots exhibited GUS activity and Southern analysis showed a single copy insertion into the genome. When the transgenic plants were transferred to soil, they displayed the phenotype specific to the transgenic plants by A. rhizogenes such as dwarfness, delay of flowering, and wrinkled leaves and petals.

    Notes: Abstract H-ZSM-5 readily catalyzed the ring-opening of 1,2-epoxyalkane with alcohols to give alkoxy alcohols. The reaction proceeded accompanying the shape-selective properties of H-ZSM-5. The rate of the ring-opening was retarded by use of alcohols with larger numbers of carbon atoms such as hexanol. The selectivities for the substitution of nucleophile alcohols at the sterically more hindered position of the epoxide were improved to be almost higher than those under basic conditions.

    Notes: Abstract A phosphine-stabilized mononuclear gold complex Au(PPh3)(NO3) (1) and a phosphine-stabilized gold cluster [Aug(PPh3)8](NO3)3 (2) were used as precursors for preparation of supported gold catalysts. Both complexes 1 and 2 supported on inorganic oxides such as α-Fe2O3, TiO2, and SiO2 were inactive for CO oxidation, whereas the 1 or 2/ oxides treated under air or CO or 5% h2/Ar atmosphere were found to be active for CO oxidation. The catalytic activity depended on not only the treatment conditions but also the kinds of the precursor and the supports used. The catalysts derived from 1 showed higher activity than those derived from 2. α-Fe2O3 and TiO2 were much more efficient supports than SiO2 for the gold particles which were characterized by XRD and EXAFS.
