Notes: Abstract ATM networks rely on the Virtual Circuit (VC) and Virtual Path (VP) concepts to provide unicast connection-oriented services with Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees. This paper presents a model for managing the configuration and performance of the VC and VP services in these networks. The model consists of a connection management architecture that provides the services and is instrumented for network management purposes, and a network management architecture that uses the OSI management model to provide access to the appropriate service monitoring and control functions. The network management architecture proposes complete managed object definitions that achieve a variety of monitoring and control objectives: service configuration, service performance at the call and cell level, and service control. The latter includes the capability to establish VPs and control their allocated networking capacity and also control parameters of the signaling system that affect the performance of the VC service. The architecture was implemented in its entirety on the Xunet ATM testbed, and several experiments were conducted to illustrate the trade-off between the throughput of the VC service and the allocation of capacity to VPs. The experiments further demonstrated that the signaling system can create throughput bottlenecks in the absence of VPs in the network, and therefore, the network operator can increase performance by controlling the VP distribution.

Notes: Abstract Electronic mail, or e-mail, has brought us a big step closer towards the vision of paperless offices. To advance even closer to this vision, however, it is essential that existing e-mail systems be enhanced with value-added services which are capable of replacing many of the human procedures established in pen and paper communications. One of the most important and desirable such services is certified e-mail delivery, in which the intended recipient will get the mail content if and only if the mail originator receives an irrefutable proof-of-delivery from the recipient. In this paper, we present the design of two third-party based certified mail protocols, termed CMP1 and CMP2. Both protocols are designed for integration into existing standard e-mail systems and both satisfy the requirements ofnonrepudiation of origin, nonrepudiation of delivery, and fairness. The difference between CMP1 and CMP2 is that the former provides no mail content confidentiality protection while the latter provides such a protection. Moreover, security of the protocols are analyzed using a recently proposed accountability framework.

Notes: Abstract Positron annihilatioin data collected for zeosil (a zeoilite-type solid allowing abundant Psformation) are discussed, with particular attention payed to the longest-lived positronium states as observed in lifetime spectroscopy experiments. To unravel the nature of these components, additional information was sought by applying an extermal magnetic field and by reecording the total energy distributioin of the annihilation radiation. From both the lifetime and the extended Doppler spectra, it is shown that positronium presents a very long-lived component with a relative intensity of ca. 30% and a lifetime close to the intrinsic tripler lifetime (140ns), therefore undergoing almost no pick-off annihilation. From the magnetic field experiments, the contact density parameter has a value of essentially 1, which is characteristic of an unpoerturbed triplet Ps state in vacuo. This positronium state therefore does not appear to interact with the medium.

Notes: Abstract In many sorts of zeolites long-living positron components are manifested, connected presumably with Ps-formation in various kinds of free space in the zeolite structure. Literature values demonstrate, however, a broad scasttr of data obtained for assumedly on the same composition of zeolite indicating the possible influence of tehnology, adsorbates, impurities, water content, etc. In the present work spectral changes of the 511 keV annihilation peak and its vicinity are evaluated, applying for the first time a combination of theS and W parameters and the 3γ-specific left plateau region measured in zeolites. To ensure reproducible experimental conditions, evaluated samples were measured. The data show individual temperature behaviours of the annihilation parameters in the studied temperature range of 90–450 K for each kind of samples. The temperature dependence becomes reproducible after the first heating run. The results are discussed with respect to the evolution of long-living positron and positronium components.

Notes: The influence of temperature and type of initiator on the grafting efficiency of maleic anhydride onto isotactic poly(propylene) powder under solid-state reaction conditions was investigated. The level of bonded maleic anhydride was found to be about 20% higher using aliphatic peroxide, such as lauroyl peroxide, in contrast to dibenzoyl peroxide, dicumyl peroxide, 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di-tert-butylperoxyhexane or tert-butyl perbenzoate as initiator. The higher grafting efficiency of maleic anhydride onto polyethylene when compared with poly(propylene) is accounted for by a higher kinetic length of the addition-transfer chain reactions.

Notes: A xenogeneic hollow fiber bioreactor utilizing collagen-entrapped dispersed hepatocytes has been developed as an extracorporeal bioartificial liver (BAL) for potential treatment of acute human fulminant hepatitis. Prolonged viability, enhanced liver-specific functions, and differentiated state have been observed in primary porcine hepatocytes cultivated as spheroids compared to dispersed hepatocytes plated on a monolayer. Entrapment of spheroids into the BAL can potentially improve performance over the existing device. Therefore, studies were conducted to evaluate the feasibility of utilizing spheroids as the functionally active component of our hybrid device. Confocal microscopy indicated high viability of spheroids entrapped into cylindrical collagen gel. Entrapment of spheroids alone into collagen gel showed reduced ability to contract collagen gel. By mixing spheroids with dispersed cells, the extent of collagen gel contraction was increased. Hepatocyte spheroids collagen-entrapped into BAL devices were maintained for over 9 days. Assessment of albumin synthesis and ureagenesis within a spheroid-entrapment BAL indicated higher or at least as high activity on a per-cell basis compared to a dispersed hepatocyte-entrapment BAL device. Clearance of 4-methylumbelliferone to its glucuronide was detected throughout the culture period as a marker of phase II conjugation activity. A spheroid-entrapment bioartificial liver warrants further studies for potential human therapy. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
