Notes: On many tokamaks the reconstruction of the magnetic field structure in the plasma is supported by polarimetric measurements. Recent proposed and realized methods are based on a far-infrared laser beam with a rotating polarization ellipse. The same instrument usually performs as an interferometer measuring the line integrated plasma density. It has been shown that the rotating polarization ellipse disturbs the interferometric measurements. A method based on the principle of a rotating polarization in which the interferometric measurement is unaffected is proposed. Bench test results are presented which show the feasibility of this method. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Until recently, Tetrahymena thermophila has rarely been isolated from nature. With improved sampling procedures, T. thermophila has been found in ponds in many northeastern states. The availability of resident populations makes possible both population and ecological genetic studies. All seven known mating types have been recovered; no eighth mating type has been found. Crosses among whole-genome homozygotes derived from Pennsylvania isolates reveal a spectrum genotypes with mating type alleles resembling traditional A (IV- and VII-) and B(I-) categories. The genotypes differ significantly with respect to mating type frequency, both among themselves and from previously described genotypes. One A-category genotype appears to lack mating type II, while one A-category and all B-category genotypes have low frequencies of mating type III, thus accounting for the low frequency of III in the pond. The low frequency of III in all five B-category genotypes examined suggests that the founding allele in this region was low for III. These and other differences are discussed both in terms of mating type frequencies in the pond and in terms of the possible molecular structure of mat alleles. By contrast, numerous variants of the cell surface immobilization antigen are found in addition to the previously described i-antigens. Variants of the known SerH alleles include those with restriction fragment length polymorphisms and temperature sensitivity as well as alleles with new antigenic specificity. Multiple alleles are present in single ponds. Genes exhibiting serially dominant epistasis over SerH genes also are found. In two instances (K and C), families of antigenically similar polypeptides are expressed in place of H i-antigen. Molecular weight differences suggest that these paralogous i-antigen genes evolve by gene duplication and unequal crossing over within central repeats. The existence of complex patterns of epistasis together with seasonal changes in i-ag frequencies suggest that i-ag play an important, but as yet unknown, ecological role related to the occurrence of frequent conjugation.

Notes: Antiferromagnetic (AF) coupling has been observed in sputtered Fe/Si multilayers at room temperature, with thin spacers (〈20 A(ring)) which were claimed to be FeSi. To study the magnetic coupling in this system we extend the RKKY interaction approach to a temperature-dependent narrow gap semiconductor. The strong AF coupling at room temperature and weakly ferromagnetic (F) coupling at low temperatures observed in Fe/Si can be explained from this model. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: This article analyses the validity of the widely used semi-empirical oxidation models based on the Deal-Grove formulation in the light of recent advances in the understanding of the oxidation process. An extension of the Deal-Grove formulation is suggested to account for the newest experimental results. The introduced extension incorporates the effect of accelerated initial growth into the theoretical oxidation growth model. There is a direct relationship between the newly-derived theoretical term for the initial growth rate and its widely-used empirical counterpart. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: This article presents a novel electric motor/pump system that combines an axial field, permanent magnet motor with a centrifugal pump. This system, unique because the motor permanent magnet rotor and pump impeller vanes are a single unit, provides a compact, reliable, low-noise, and high-power density electrically driven centrifugal pump suitable for underwater applications in which minimizing noise, vibration, and volume are major design objectives. Performance tradeoffs for the electromagnetic analysis were made by three-dimensional finite element analysis models in conjunction with a lumped parameter magnetic circuit model. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
