    Notes: Abstract A theory has been proposed that encompasses pre-replication changes in RNA synthesis and non-gradual variant formation, in addition to competitive replication. Using a fundamental theorem of natural selection and maximum principle scaled to nucleotide condensation, evolutionin vitro was demonstrated to maximally damp both kinetic and thermodynamic forces driving this reaction, from its pre-replication stage. This led to the finding that evolution follows a path of least action. These principles form the framework for a general theory of evolution, whose scope extends beyond evolution modeled by synthesis of non-interacting RNA molecules. It applies, in particular, to standard processes, such as competitive crystallization. In calculations simulatingde novo formation of self-replicating RNA molecules in the Qβ replicase system, spontaneous changes in strand secondary structure promoted the transition from random copolymerization to template-directed polymerization. This finding indicates selection preceded genome self-propagation. Non-gradual species formation was attributed to the presence of heterogeneous thermodynamic forces. Growth unconstrained by competition follows mutation to a variant able to utilize a free energy source alien to its progenitors. Evolution in a heterogeneous system can, therefore, exhibit discontinuous rates of species formation and spawn new species populations. Natural selection among competing self-propagators thus gives way to a principle of wider scope stating that evolution optimally damps the physicochemical forces causing change within an evolving system.

    Notes: Abstract Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics simulations are performed to study fluid adsorption of a two component fluid in slit pores of nanoscopic dimensions. The slit pores are immersed in a binary fluid bath, which is comprised of spherical molecules having a size ratio of 1.43, at constant temperature and composition. Pore width is varied to determine how the heat capacity and self-diffusion coefficient are linked to the composition and structure of the adsorbed fluid. In pores where the fluid structure is most pronounced, we observe: perfect (or near perfect) exclusion of one component by the other component, a heat capacity that rapidly oscillates and is of greater magnitude than in the fluid bath, and self-diffusion coefficients on the order of 10−8 cm2/s. The behavior of the heat capacity and diffusion coefficients appears to arise from a near solid-like layering of OMCTS that occurs at certain favorable pore widths.

    Notes: Abstract A Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulation method is used to determine the adsorption isotherms, interaction energies, entropies, and density distribution of a Lennard-Jones fluid adsorbed in smooth-walled nanopores of varying size and shape. We specifically include very crowded pores, where packing effects are important. Differences in the isotherms of slit, cylindrical, and spherical nanopores of varying sizes can be explained in terms of the adsorbate-adsorbate interaction energy, the adsorbate-pore interaction energy, and the density profiles, which influence the balance between the former and the latter energy contributions. The expectation from low loading studies that the most energetically favorable adsorbate-pore interactions maximize adsorption is not borne out at intermediate and higher loadings. Instead, the relationships between adsorbed amounts and pore size and shape are found to be strong functions of the depth and steepness of the external potential, the extent to which adsorbate-adsorbate repulsion establishes short range fluid order, and the accessible pore volume. This study has implications for high pore density processes in nanoporous materials, such as zeolite catalysis, separations, and templating in zeolite synthesis.

    Notes: Abstract The thermal decomposition products of pyridinium sulfate differ from those of pyridinium sulfate supported on zirconia which in turn differs from that of pyridine adsorbed on a sulfated zirconia. Unsupported pyridinium sulfate decomposes to produce pyridine and sulfuric acid, and these subsequently react to produce oxides of carbon and sulfur. Zirconia that is sulfated and then exposed to pyridine does not release detectable amount of pyridine during heating in an inert gas; rather the pyridine undergoes oxidation reduction reactions simultaneously to release CO2 and sulfur compounds. Pyridinium sulfate supported on zirconia decomposes upon heating to release pyridine and sulfuric acid, which reacts with the zirconia. The desorption of pyridine in one case and only CO2/SOx in the other case suggests that sulfated zirconia does not contain Brønsted acidity that can form pyridinium sulfate.

    Notes: Abstract The transesterification reaction of ethyl phenylacetate to hexyl phenylacetate on an “imprinted” silica catalyst of the type first reported by Heilmann and Maier is investigated. In the presence of sulfuric acid co-catalysts, the data obtained here reveal that catalytic activity can be due to phosphorous species leached into solution; no evidence for molecular recognition and catalysis from an imprinted site in the silica is observed. In the absence of co-catalysts, no conclusion regarding the presence of an imprinted site in the silica can be ascertained because of the low level of activity relative to background autocatalysis.

    Notes: Abstract This paper investigates the problem of predicting daily returns based on five Canadian exchange rates using artificial neural networks and EGARCH-M models. First, the statistical properties of five daily exchange rate series (US Dollar, German Mark, French Franc, Japanese Yen and British Pound) are analysed. EGARCH-M models on the Generalised Error Distribution (GED) are fitted to the return series, and serve as comparison standards, along with random walk models. Second, backpropagation networks (BPN) using lagged returns as inputs are trained and tested. Estimated volatilities from the EGARCH-M models are used also as inputs to see if performance is affected. The question of spillovers in interrelated markets is investigated with networks of multiple inputs and outputs. In addition, Elman-type recurrent networks are also trained and tested. Comparison of the various methods suggests that, despite their simplicity, neural networks are similar to the EGARCH-M class of nonlinear models, but superior to random walk models, in terms of insample fit and out-of-sample prediction performance.
