Addition of compound4 to α,β-unsaturated compounds,i.e. chalcones, maleic anhydride, quinones, and acrylonitrile, was investigated.

    Notes: Abstract The computation of the geometrical parameters identification model of a robot arm leads to an intrinsic extended Jacobian matrix. This matrix is often singular and its manual computation is tedious and may lead to error. A computer assisted procedure is developed to compute this matrix symbolically and to check its singularity. The program GPIM is developed in Pascal and works on PC's for this purpose. Jacobian singularity is checked using its symbolic expressions with the aid of a proposed table for robot arm parameters to obtain a minimum set of identified parameters. This program can be used for simple chain robot arms having revolute (R) and/or prismatic (P) joints including the case of consecutive near parallel axes. TH8 robot arm of type RPPRRR having two pairs of consecutive near parallel axes is studied to show the program efficiency and how singularity is eliminated.

Fayette) cotyledonary nodes were transformed with bean pod mottle virus (BPMV) coat protein precursor (CP-P) gene via Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. The transformation rate was low, and only five primary transformants derived from five different cotyledons were obtained from 400 original cotyledons. Southern blot hybridization verified the integration of the BPMV CP-P gene. Inheritance and expression of this gene in R1 plants were also demonstrated. About 30% of R2 plants derived from one transgenic line showed complete resistance to BPMV infection, as assessed by symptomatology and ELISA, suggesting that homozygous, but not hemizygous, plants exhibit the resistant phenotype.

    Notes: Summary Ternary 1:1:1 complexes of YIII, CoII, NiII, CuII, LaIII, CeIII and UO 2 2+ with N-(2-acetamido)iminodiacetic acid (H2ADA) as primary ligand and salicylic, anthranilic or phthalic acid as secondary ligand are described. The complexes of CoII and CuII were isolated and characterized by microanalysis, molar conductance measurements, thermal analysis, i.r. and u.v.-vis. spectra. The formation constants of the 1∶1∶1 ternary complexes were determined potentiometrically in 20% (w/w) EtOH-H2O at 24 °C. The stabilities of the 1∶1∶1 M n+ :ADA2−:aromatic acid ternary complexes are higher than those of the corresponding 1∶1 M n+ :aromatic acid binary complexes.

    Notes: Abstract Ten erythropoietin (EPO) fractions differing in sialic acid content, ranging from 9.5 to 13.8 mol mol−1 of EPO, were obtained from baby hamster kidney cell-derived recombinant human EPO by Mono Q column chromatography. The mean pI values of the EPO fractions determined by IEF-gel electrophoresis systematically shifted from 4.11 to 3.31, coinciding with the sialic acid content, without a change in the constitution of asialo N-linked oligosaccharides of each fraction. Although a linear relationship between thein vivo bioactivity and the sialic acid content of the fractionated, samples was observed until 12.1 mol mol−1 of EPO, there was no further increase in their activity over 12.4 mol mol−1 of EPO. On the other hand, an inverse relationship between thein vitro bioactivity and sialic acid content of EPO was observed. Also, we showed that thein vivo bioactivity of some fractions with low sialic acid contents was increased after treatment with α2,6-sialyltransferase, but thein vivo bioactivity of the other fractions with high sialic acid contents was either decreased or not affected.

    Notes: Abstract The majora2–6 sialoglycoproteins in detergent-extracts of Kurloff cells were purified by anion-exchange andSambucus nigra agglutinin-affinity chromatographies. The similar ultrastructural localisations of (1)S. nigra agglutinin-gold conjugates and (2) acid phosphatase activities on the Kurloff body and particularly on its myelin figures indicated that the majora2-6 sialoglycoproteins of the Kurloff cell had acid phosphatase activity. Two-dimensional electrophoresis showed that these tartrate-sensitive phosphatases corresponded to 2 acidic (pI 3.4–3.7) polypeptides of 36 and 34 kDa. Hydrolysis with peptide-N-glycosidases F gave a 33 kDa apoprotein rich in alanine, glutamic acid, tyrosine and lysin. A lectin-affinity study demonstrated that they contained hybrid type bisected and fucosylatedN-linked oligosaccharides. Cytotoxic properties were previously attributed to Kurloff cells and other studies suggested that not only acid phosphatases but alsoa2-6-linked sialic acid residues themselves may participate in natural killer activity.

    Notes: Abstract We consider methods for calculating the surface temperature Ts of polymers upon exposure to infrared laser radiation during modification, pyrolysis, ablation, ignition, etc. We have shown that we need to calculate the values of Ts for polymers using different analytical expressions after estimating the value of the dimensionless parameter u = μ√ate, where μ is the absorption coefficient for the laser radiation, a is the thermal diffusivity, and te is the radiation exposure time. Under these conditions, we achieve the smallest calculation error and we can take into account “volume” absorption of radiation.

    Notes: Abstract Cytokinins play a critical role in several aspects of plant growth, metabolism and development. We previously reported that adding cytokinins to the culture medium of a suspension-cultured cell line of periwinkle increased the accumulation of indole alkaloids, and our aim was to compare the effect of exogenously-applied cytokinins with that of elevated levels of endogenous cytokinins on indole alkaloid production. We used an Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain yielding a plasmid with the isopentenyl transferase gene under control of its own promoter. Co-culture of suspension cells with the bacteria caused a severe stress response leading to cell necrosis. Therefore, we failed to transform this material but we succeeded in transforming periwinkle cotyledons. We verified that callus cultures generated from the isopentenyl transferase-transgenic cotyledons accumulated high cytokinin concentrations. Treating normal callus cultures (generated from untransformed cotyledons) with cytokinins enhanced their alkaloid production. By contrast, the enhanced concentration of endogenous cytokinins in transgenic calli did not increase indole alkaloid production, and thus did not mimic the effect of exogenously-applied cytokinins. Hypothesis to explain this discrepancy are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Some species of the genus Erythrina have considerable potential as forage, but information on their nutritional value is scanty. The objective of the study was to define groups of Erythrina provenances based on rumen degradation parameters for dry matter and nitrogen which would be useful in the selection of provenances for detailed nutritional or tree improvement studies. Degradation parameters (i.e. soluble fraction (a), slowly degradable fraction (b), rate of degradation (c) and extent of degradation (a + b) were estimated for twenty Erythrina provenances belonging to seven species (E. abyssinica, E. bentipoeme, E. brucei, E. burana, E. melanacantha, E. poeppigiana and E. variegata)). The data were subjected to principal component and cluster analyses for grouping, and the 20 provenances were placed into four distinct cluster groups. Provenances of E. brucei and E. abyssinica belonged to three clusters, whereas provenances of E. burana and E. variegata were confined to one cluster. Using extent of dry matter and nitrogen degradation values of 71 and 86% respectively, as a forage quality index, members of clusters 1 and 2 (i.e. E. abyssinica, ILCA 10606; E. brucei, ILCA 10579, 10625, 10628, 10637, 10643; E. burana 10575, 10641, 12157; E. melanacantha ILCA 10574 and E. variegata ILCA 14991 and 14994), appeared to be superior in quality to their counterparts in clusters 3 and 4. The results suggested existence of intra and inter-species variation in rumen degradation characteristics for dry matter and nitrogen within the genus Erythrina.
