Notes: The 5′-amino-5′-deoxy-2′,3′-O-isopropylideneadenosine (4) was obtained in pure form from 2′,3′-O-isopropylideneadenosine (1), without isolation of intermediates 2 and 3. The 2-(4-nitrophenyl)ethoxycarbonyl group was used for protection of the NH2 functions of 4 (→7). The selective introduction of the palmitoyl (= hexadecanoyl) group into the 5′-N-position of 4 was achieved by its treatment with palmitoyl chloride in MeCN in the presence of Et3N (→5). The 3′-O-silyl derivatives 11 and 14 were isolated by column chromatography after treatment of the 2′,3′-O-deprotected compounds 8 and 9, respectively, with (tert-butyl)dimethylsilyl chloride and 1H-imidazole in pyridine. The corresponding phosphoramidites 16 and 17 were synthesized from nucleosides 11 and 14, respectively, and (cyanoethoxy)bis(diisopropylamino)phosphane in CH2Cl2. The trimeric (2′-5′)-linked adenylates 25 and 26 having the 5′-amino-5′-deoxyadenosine and 5′-deoxy-5′-(palmitoylamino)adenosine residue, respectively, at the 5′-end were prepared by the phosphoramidite method. Similarly, the corresponding 5′-amino derivatives 27 and 28 carrying the 9-[(2-hydroxyethoxy)methyl]adenine residue at the 2′-terminus, were obtained. The newly synthesized compounds were characterized by physical means. The synthesized trimers 25-28 were 3-, 15-, 25-, and 34-fold, respectively, more stable towards phosphodiesterase from Crotalus durissus than the trimer (2′-5′)ApApA.

Notes: The separation of air by pressure swing adsorption is improved by filling the interparticle voids in kineticaly selective adsorbent beds with fine particles of the adsorbent or inert material. He ratio of the average diameter of the coarse adsorbent particles to the average diameter of the fine particles, the size of the fine particles themselves, and the percent of volume of the fine particles in the bed are all critical to optimum PA performance.

Notes: A procedure was developed for construction of industrial strains of distiller's yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). It includes several steps: construction of congenic genetically marked haploid strains of opposite mating types starting from an industrial strain of hybrid nature, integrative transformation of the above haploid strains with a DNA fragment containing an expression cassette responsible for new technological facilities, and hybridization of transformants and isolation of final industrial homozygous strains under experimental conditions simulating commercial fermentation processes. This strategy permits the generation of strains that have desirable characteristics of traditional races of distiller's yeast along with new technological facilities determined by the particular expression cassette. Using this procedure, we have constructed an industrial strain with improved amylolytic activity. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Photocrosslinking of low-density polyethylene, (LDPE), polypropylene (PP) and their blends was investigated using xanthone and triallyl cyanurate as a photoinitiator and a coagent, respectively. The influence of the change of UV-irradiation conditions on the yield of photoinitiated processes was found to be very similar at any composition, while the crosslinking efficiency decreases with increase of PP content in the blend. The mechanism of the TAC action in photocrosslinking process was proposed and the effect of TAC reactions is discussed with regards to the effectivity of crosslinking of LDPE, PP, or the blends. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The influence of the presence of some polyols in initial poly(vinyl alcohol) aqueous solutions on rheological and thermal properties of the cryogels, which were produced by the freezing-thawing method, was investigated. The polyol additives (cosolvents) were as follows: glycerol, propylene glycol, mono-, di-, and triethylene glycols, and oligoethylene glycols (PEG-400 and PEG-1000). It was shown that the introduction of glycerol, propylene, or ethylene glycols into the polymer solution resulted in a decrease of cryogel's shear modulus and fusion temperature, whereas the use of triethylene and higher ethylene glycol oligomers as cosolvents gave rise to an increase in the gel's strength and thermostability, and diethylene glycol exhibited a transitional influence. The possible mechanism of the action of reinforcing cosolvents is discussed. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Laser-induced TiCl4 decomposition at vapour pressure was performed and comparative study of the composition and structure of thermally (at 10.6 μm) and photolytically (at 248 nm) deposited Ti-based films is presented. Emphasis was given to the less explored titanium deposition process by CO2 laser pyrolysis of TiCl4. The detailed structure of films deposited on quartz substrates was examined by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The influence of the incident laser energy on the chemical content of the films as well as on the film growth rate was demonstrated. The results indicate that in the thermal IR decomposition of TiCl4 a multilayer structure is formed with unsaturated TiSix at the interface and oxidized phases at the surface. The photolytic process leads to films with increased purity and a specific growth morphology.

Notes: X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is used to study the surface segregation of siloxane in blends of poly(vinyl chloride) with siloxane-urethane-ethyleneoxide oligomers. At high concentration of the oligomeric additive, the surface segregation of siloxane in the blends strongly depends on the molecular architecture of the additive: the segregation is much higher when the siloxane blocks are at the ends of the oligomeric chains. At low additive concentrations, the surface segregation of siloxane is governed solely by the siloxane concentration in the bulk. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Many polymer-based materials degrade in low earth orbit (LEO), mainly due to the damaging environmental effects of hyperthermal or fast atomic oxygen of energy E ∼ 5 eV and solar vacuum ultraviolet radiation. Fast atomic oxygen fluxes of similar energies are generated now in ground-based facilities that are used for accelerated testing of materials. This paper presents a brief overview of the effects of interaction of fast atomic oxygen fluxes with polymer-based materials in the LEO space environment and in ground-based simulators, and discusses a few possible applications of fast atomic oxygen fluxes. Such applications can lead to considerable advantages over plasma treatment, aimed at improvement of adhesion-related and optical properties of polymer-based materials, high-quality precise photoresist etching and passivative oxidation of advanced semiconductor materials, and modified or entirely new surface properties of biomaterials and chemical sensors.

Notes: A quantitative study by reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS) on multilayer systems of Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) poly(amino acid) films has been carried out. Thickness measurements of monolayer and multilayer systems have been made and the results obtained by two well-known equations have been compared. Evolution of the α-helix conformation as a function of temperature in the case of polybenzyl aspartate (PBA) and polybenzyl glutamate LB systems has also been studied by RAIRS. Finally, a Fourier transform infrared transmission study on PBA LB multilayers as a function of temperature has allowed us to draw some conclusions on the orientation of the C=O bonds (amide I) with respect to the dipping direction.
