Notes: GYROTRON FU IV, a frequency tunable gyrotron for spectroscopy in the submillimeter wavelength range using a 17 T superconducting magnet, has been designed and constructed. Simulations predict that the gyrotron will emit radiation at high frequencies up to 394 GHz (TE041 cavity mode) at the fundamental of the electron cyclotron frequency, up to 858 GHz (TE091 mode) at the second harmonic and up to 1301 GHz (TE8 11 1 mode) at the third harmonic. Preliminary experimental results have demonstrated operation from 158 to 443 GHz at the fundamental and from 336 to 838 GHz at the second harmonic. Output powers are several hundred watts and efficiencies several percent. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The development of a submillimeter wave, high-harmonic gyrotron using a 12 T superconducting magnet is described. It has achieved frequencies as high as 636 GHz (corresponding to a wavelength of 472 μm) in second harmonic operation. Many resonances could be obtained as a single mode without competing modes. Typical output power is several hundred watts at both the fundamental and the second harmonic. At low beam currents (Ib∼0.5 A), third harmonic operation has been obtained. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A new spherical grating monochromator with translational and rotational assembly including a normal incidence mount (SGM-TRAIN) is under construction at BL 5A of the UVSOR Facility, IMS, and its design concept is reported. The following points have been taken into account in the design: (1) Energy range of 5–250 eV, (2) use both of undulator and bending magnet radiation, (3) linear and circular polarizations, (4) spectral purity, (5) resolution, and (6) length of beamline. It should be stressed that the SGM-TRAIN is useful for experiments where circularly polarized synchrotron radiation is used. Moreover, the SGM-TRAIN has the advantage that the small emittance of storage ring and the large space for a long beamline are not necessary. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A scanning interference electron microscope (SIEM) has been developed for periodical nanostructure fabrication. This system can produce electron interference fringes with a period from 2 nm to several tens of micrometers. Fabrications of periodical nanostructures with 23 to 170 nm periods have been demonstrated by transferring the electron interference fringe onto the semiconductor surfaces. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Nanometer-sized GaAs particles embedded in SiO2 were prepared by a digital rf-sputtering method, where GaAs and SiO2 targets were alternately sputtered in an Ar atmosphere. The GaAs deposition time was kept shorter than the time required to form a continuous layer. Transmission electron microscopy observations showed that the sizes of the GaAs particles can be controlled from 2 to 8 nm by changing the sputtering cycle time of the GaAs target. In spite of their small size, the GaAs particles have crystallinity similar to the target material without substrate heating or postannealing. The optical absorption spectra of the GaAs particles show a blue shift as large as 1.6 eV, corresponding to strong quantum confinement of electrons and holes. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Some Ru and Co carbonyl clusters in zeolite pores such as Ru3(CO)12/NaY, [HRu6(CO)18]−/NaY, [Ru6(CO)18]2−/NaX, Co4(CO)12/NaY and Co6(CO)16/NaY were prepared by the ship-in-bottle technique, and characterized by FTIR and EXAFS. The RuCo bimetallic carbonyl cluster was prepared by reductive carbonylation of the oxidized RuCo/NaY, which provides the proposed assignment to [HRUCo3(CO)12]/NaY. The tailored Ru, RuCo and Co catalysts were prepared by H2 reduction from the precursors, e.g. Ru, RuCo bimetallic and Co carbonyl clusters impregnated on SiO2 and entrapped in NaY and NaX zeolites. The RuCo bimetallic carbonyl cluster-derived catalysts showed substantially higher activities and selectivities for oxygenates such as C1–C5 alcohols in CO hydrogenation (CO/H2 = 0.33-1.0, 5 bar, 519–543 K). By contrast, hydrocarbons such as methane were preferentially obtained on the catalysts prepared from Ru6, Ru3 and Co4 carbonyl clusters and provided lower CO conversion and poor selectivities for oxygenates. The RuCo bimetals are proposed to be associated with the selective formation of higher alcohols in CO hydrogenation.

Notes: Abstract N-Oxidation of 4,4′-methylene-bis(2-chloroaniline) (MBOCA) may lead to formation of DNA adducts. To determine if cytochrome P450s are involved in the formation of MBOCA derived-DNA adducts, yeast strains expressing rodent P450s were exposed to MBOCA, and32P-postlabelling of nucleotides from yeast genomic DNA was done. Chromatographic analysis on PEI cellulose showed that, upon exposure to MBOCA for 1 h, nine DNA adducts were formed in yeast expressing phenobarbital-inducible rabbit P450 2B5. With a 4-h-exposure, all adducts increased in parallel. In cell-free experiments, the incubation of MBOCA with phenobarbital-induced rat microsomal fraction followed by incubation with thymus DNA, led to the formation of more than ten DNA adducts. When yeast expressing 3-methylcholanthrene-inducible rat P450 1A1 was exposed to MBOCA, one major and two minor adducts were formed. No adducts were detected in control yeast. These results show that recombinant rabbit P450 2B5 exhibits a potential activation of MBOCA and that rat P450 1A1 has some effect. The use of yeast expressing recombinant P450s and the technique of32P-postlabelling facilitates a simple search for chemicals with carcinogenic potential.

Notes: Abstract The selectivity and reactivity in the hydrogenation of 1,3-butadiene catalyzed by Tl-modified 5 wt% Pd/Al2O3 catalysts vary with amounts of Tl loading and with the reduction temperatures, that is, the main product was 1-butene and trans-2-butene for values of Tl loading of 0.5 and 2 in Tl/Pd atomic ratio, respectively, when the catalysts were reduced at 673 K. 1,3-butadiene was hydrogenated selectively towards 1-butene and trans-2-butene when the Tl modified 5 wt% Pd/Al2O3 catalyst of Tl/Pd = 2 was reduced at 300 and 373 K or above, respectively. On the catalyst with Tl/Pd = 2 reduced at 373 K or above, the butenes formed are not hydrogenated to butane, even after a long reaction time. These results suggest the formation of Pd-Tl alloy or intermetallic compounds during the reduction procedure which is responsible for the selectivity controlling in the reaction. TPR and XRD results were in consistence with the reaction data.

Notes: Abstract In order to investigate the re-epithelialization process during wound healing, the hair on the back of guinea pigs was shaved and then excisional wounds were made through the entire thickness of the skin. Histological changes were observed and changes in the expression of different cytokeratin polypeptides were examined using an immunohistochemical technique. Immunohisto chemical study revealed that the proliferating and migrating keratinocytes expressed the same cytokeratins as the basal cells of normal epidermis. In addition, the entire epidermis of fairly remote areas from the edges of the wound where no thickening was observed showed a temporarily abnormal staining pattern. The suprabasal cells in the regenerating epidermis temporarily expressed cytokeratins not only specific for suprabasal cells but also specific for basal cells. The cytokeratins expressed in normal basal keratinocytes were also present in the thickened granular layers. These data indicate that the expression of cytokeratins in the epidermal keratinocytes (even in fairly remote areas from the wound edges) changes during wound healing, that the origin of the migrating keratinocytes from the remaining epidermis seems to be the basal cells in the epidermis, and that the appearance of keratohyalin granules is not related to changes in cytokeratin expression.

Notes: Abstract This paper describes a Holocene reef structure observed from a cutting in a modern reef on Okierabu Island in the Ryukyu Islands and proposes a process for the initiation and formation of narrow, lagoon-less fringing reef flats. Reef formation began around 7050 yBP at 11 m below present sea level. The reef was constructed by a uniform facies of in situ tabular corals and kept up with sea level rise. Geomorphological zonation has been restricted by the lack of a cross-reef energy gradient during reef formation. Sediment trapped by limestone caves abutting the shore has contributed to this characteristic. The slope break around-10 m and steep scarp of the shore create a narrow substrate that is responsible for the development of an equally narrow reef flat.
