Notes: Abstract The level structure of104Ag has been studied through the103Rh (α, 3nγ) reaction at Eα=40 and 45 MeV. The principal features of the proposed level scheme are in agreement with those obtained earlier through heavy ion reaction. Two quasiparttcle-plus-rotor model calculation has been performed, and the results are compared with experimental data.

Notes: Abstract The band structures of121, 123I nuclei have been studied using a version of the particle-rotor-model in which the experimental excitation energies of the neighbouring (A-1) cores can be fed directly as input parameters. The calculations have been carried out with axially symmetric Nilsson potential with both prolate and oblate deformations. The parameters of the model have been chosen from earlier theoretical work and experimental odd-even mass differences. Only the Coriolis attenuation factor has been treated as adjustable parameter. The theoretical band structures are in very good agreement with the available experimental data.

Notes: Summary Long-period fading observed in recordings ofVLF andLF atmospherics in meteorologically clear nights exhibits a good correlation with the geomagnetic activity indexA p . The fading phenomenon occurs more frequently in the case of integrated field intensity of atmospherics than in the case of andLF radio signal transmitted from a certain station. The phenomenon has been analyzed for the monsoon and postmonsoon periods separately, and the results have been discussed in relation to the large-scale travelling ionospheric distubances (LS TID). The modal value of fade periods forVLF andLF atmospherics has been found to be about one hour. It is noted that the correlation of the fade amplitude of highttimeVLF andLF atmospherics versus the geomagnetic activity is frequency dependent and increases fromVLF toLF.

Notes: Abstract Anomalous propagational characteristics, daytime signal levels greater than night-time, were observed. The amplitude records of a 40-kHz signal propagated over a distance of 5100 km from Sanwa, Japan to Calcutta along a low-latitude path show higher signal strength at midday compared to the midnight level on days preceded by principal geomagnetic storms, earthquakes and major meteor showers. This is explained by the increased ionization in the D-region following geophysical events. The storm after-effects only have a duration of a single day in this low-latitude path.

Notes: Abstract This study reexamined the mechanism of β1 formation in conventional dental amalgams in the light of a previously unrecognized intergranular structure, the SnHg-δ2 phase. Two amalgams, A (45. 5% Hg) and B (65. 0% Hg), were made from a Zn-free alloy of the following composition (wt%): Ag-70, Sn-26, Cu-4. After storage at 37°C for 1 day, both amalgams were heat treated at 70°C for up to 16 days. The structural changes in the two amalgams as a function of their heat treatment were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction techniques. On the basis of the experimental data, we have proposed a new mechanism on β1 formation. This mechanism involves a series of interrelated reactions. The primary one is a reaction between AgSn-γ and δ2 that leads to the nucleation of β1 at γ boundaries. Simultaneous operation of several secondary and tertiary reactions result in (1) further growth of β1 and its continuing change in composition, (2) loss of Sn from the δ1 matrix, (3) conversion of CuHg into η, and (4) a possible transformation of δ2 into Sn-rich β1 or α1.

Notes: In this study, the ternary HgAgSn-γ1 matrix of a ductile dental amalgam has been characterized and compared with that of a brittle amalgam. Specimens of both amalgams were prepared form commercial alloy powders according to the ADA specification 1, stored at 37°C and studied by differential scanning calorimetry technique at timed intervals up to 1 year. Experimental amalgams of AgCu eutectic admixed with varying concentrations of Sn were used as standards. The matrix of the ductile amalgam was found to contain two substructures initially. One was saturated with Sn and the other contained lesser amounts of Sn. These substructures disappeared with time leading to a matrix in which Sn was well below its saturation limit but uniformly distributed. The matrix of the brittle amalgam, on the other hand, was saturated with Sn during the entire period of this study.

Notes: Abstract A soluble protein phosphatase from the promastigote form of the parasitic protozoanLeishmania donovani was partially purified using Sephadex G-100, DEAE-cellulose and again Sephadex G-100 columns. The partially purified enzyme showed a native molecular weight of about 42, 000 in both Sephadex G-100 and sucrose density gradient centrifugation. The sedimentation constant, stokes radius and frictional ratio were found to be 3.43S, 2.8 nm and 1.20 respectively. The enzyme preferentially utilized phosphohistone as the best exogenous substrate. Mg2+ ions were essential for enzyme activity; among other metal ions Mn2+ can replace Mg2+ to a certain extent whereas Ca2+, Co2+ and Zn2+ could not substitute for Mg2+. The pH optimum of the enzyme was 6.5–7.5 and the temperature optimum 37°C. The apparent Km for phosphohistone was 7.14 μM. ATP, ADP, inorganic phosphate and pyrophosphate had inhibitory effect on the enzyme activity whereas no inhibition was observed with sodium tartrate and okadaic acid. These results suggest thatL. donovani promastigotes possess a protein phosphatase which has similar characteristics with the mammalian protein phosphatase 2C.

Notes: Abstract Rain water samples were collected at New Delhi during the monsoon of 1994 at a height of 30 m above the ground level using a wet-only collector. Simultaneously, bulk samples from two different heights at 30 m and 13 m were collected. Frequency distribution of pH in wet-only samples revealed that rain was mostly alkaline Four out of 23 events were observed to be acidic where the ratio of (Ca+Mg+NH4)/(SO4+NO3) was very low. pH and ionic constituents were higher in bulk samples than in wet-only samples. On an average, the concentration in bulk samples at 30m height exceeded the wet-only samples by 13% while bulk samples collected at 13m height had 19% higher concentration than the bulk samples at 30m height and 32% higher than wet-only. The acidity of ram water was mainly contributed by sulphuric acid rather than nitric acid. At the height of 30 m, the acidity was primarily neutralized by NH4 while at 13 m height, it was buffered by Ca and Mg indicating the influence of dust particles.

Notes: Abstract Total RNA as well as transfer RNA were quantified from mature ova apart from four different embryonic stages namely mid-cleavage, early gastrula, mid-gastrula and organogenesis of the freshwater teleostHeteropneustes fossilis. Total RNA as well as transfer RNA quantity follow a similar variation pattern, being maximum during mid-gastrulation. When analysed by total amino acid acceptance capacity, transfer RNA shows its maximum activity during mid-gastrulation. This coincides with the higher ratio of tRNA to total RNA at this stage. The relative aminoacylation capacity for Ser, Gly, Asn and Thr are found to be higher (9–34%) compared to that for other amino acids. Total tRNA, resolved into three peaks upon HPLC fractionation, shows a high cumulative peak area during mid-gastrulation and organogenesis. These results indicate a switch over of maternal to embryonic translation machinery during gastrulation.
