Notes: Abstract We outline a general approach to microscopic evaluation of the properties of strongly interacting, spatially inhomogeneous Bose systems at finite temperatures. A minimum principle for the Helmholtz free energy is used together with an appropriate trial density matrix to generalize the correlated variational wave function theory that has proven so successful in the treatment of the ground states and elementary excitations of quantum fluids at zero temperature. Euler-Lagrange equations are obtained that determine the optimal structure through the one-and two-body densities and the optimal density fluctuation operators and energies characterizing the elementary excitations. Some results of an application of this correlated density matrix theory to the4He liquid-vapor interface are presented, with particular focus on the characterization of resonant vapor modes.

Notes: Abstract Advances in the synthesis of organic conducting polymer systems has increased the electrical conductivity of these systems by several orders of magnitude in the last decade. Several practical applications are envisioned for such systems, but a thorough understanding of the conduction mechanisms and identification of the charge carriers is lacking, making design and implementation for bulk synthesis difficult. In order to clarify our understanding of the electrical properties of these systems, the resistivity and magnetoresistivity of various polymers doped near the metal - insulator transition, such as polyaniline protonated by camphor sulfonic acid (PANi-CSA) and polypyrrole doped with PF6 (PPy-PF6), have been studied down to 25 mK in magnetic fields up to 16 T.

Notes: Abstract Cognitive dissonance is defined as the psychological discomfort or annoyance that may exist when an individual's choice is not consistent with his values and beliefs. Dissonance may cause an individual to reconsider his values and beliefs, enter new choices with different parameters, respond to the constraints imposed, or change his individual preference function. This paper extends Festinger's (1957) theory of cognitive dissonance to the work of public choice theorists and seeks to explain the incentives of the iron triangle to foment and quell dissonance. Examples are provided for specific environmental and health and safety risks. Akerlof and Dickens (1983) used cognitive dissonance to justify public sector intervention as necessary to correct what they perceived as a market failure in the choice of safety equipment by workers in hazardeus industries. Unlike Akerlof and Dickens (1983), we argue that the concept of cognitive dissonance is applicable to the analysis of public sector decisions giving rise to government failure as well as private decisions involving possible market failure. This paper views the public sector as a market-like arrangement in which dissonance may be produced and exchanged like any other commodity. Cognitive dissonance provides a useful framework for examining individual choice and also expands our understanding of the unseen elements of rent-seeking.

Notes: Abstract Five separate methods, paper chromatography, ethanol solubility, pH dependence, enzymatic activity, and NMR saturation transfer, were used to study the coupling of pyruvate kinase (PK) and creatine kinase (CK). Each method demonstrated specific coupling of the two proteins. The coupling with CK showed that PK had increased ethanol solubility, enzymatic activity, pH-dependent aqueous solubility, and ability to receive ATP directly from CK even at very high (1.2 M) ionic strength at equilibrium conditions. The robustness of the coupling between two enzymes with highin vivo concentrations indicates the necessity for considering kinetic schemes utilizing high enzyme concentrations, as opposed to the dilute properties of Michaelis — Menten kinetics. The direct transfer of ATP from PK to CK constitutes a net transfer of the glycolytically produced high-energy phosphate onto creatine, maintaining a high ADP and low ATP concentration in the vicinity of the glycolytic complex, conditions suited to maintaining a high glycolytic flux. The demonstration of the physical and functional coupling of two soluble enzymes, termed diazymes, suggests that glycolysis may be regulated by diazymatic coupling and that other cellular processes could be regulated similarly.

Notes: Abstract Perdido Bay is a shallow estuarine system of approximately 130 km2 with three major freshwater inputs. On a seasonal basis the productivity and chlorophyll a concentration of phytoplankton in Perdido Bay are controlled by temperature. One input, Eleven Mile Creek, is influenced by a paper mill discharge. Eleven Mile Creek exhibits high levels of light attenuation, high concentrations of dissolved nutrients, and low rates of carbon fixation that are significantly different from the other inputs or areas of Perdido Bay and productivity in Eleven Mile Creek is light limited. Upper Perdido Bay had slightly elevated concentrations of dissolved nutrients which correlate with significantly higher rates of carbon fixation and phytoplankton biomass. Nutrients and color from Eleven Mile Creck are diluted by the Perdido River inflow, restricting nutrient and light limitations to the area at the mouth of Eleven Mile Creek.

Notes: Abstract In a computational model of the bursting neuron R15, we have implemented proposed mechanisms for the modulation of two ionic currents (I R andI SI) that play key roles in regulating its spontaneous electrical activity. The model was sufficient to simulate a wide range of endogenous activity in the presence of various concentrations of serotonin (5-HT) or dopamine (DA). The model was also sufficient to simulate the responses of the neuron to extrinsic current pulses and the ways in which those responses were altered by 5-HT or DA. The results suggest that the actions of modulatory agents and second messengers on this neuron, and presumably other neurons, cannot be understood on the basis of their direct effects alone. It is also necessary to take into account the indirect effects of these agents on other unmodulated ion channels. These indirect effects occur through the dynamic interactions of voltage-dependent and calcium-dependent processes.
