    Notes: : This paper describes a procedure to design pluvial drainage systems in such a way as to prevent large excavation volumes and erosive velocities. To this end the storage capacity of the channel system is taken into account. In a preliminary step, the procedure employs an approximate method to determine the channel dimensions. Therefore, the dimensions are adjusted by means of a numerical method of solution of the unsteady flow equations. An example is included.

    Notes: . Phytomonas sp. membranes have an adenylyl cyclase activity which is greater in the presence of Mn2+ than with Mg2+. The Mg2+ and Mn2+ activity ratio varies from one membrane preparation to another, suggesting that the adenylyl cyclase has a variable activation state. A [35S]GTP-γ-S-binding activity with a Kd of 171 nM was detected in Phytomonas membranes. Incubation of these membranes with activated cholera or pertussis toxin and [adenylate 32P]NAD+ led to incorporation of radioactivity into bands of about 40–44 kDa. Crude membranes were electrophoresed on SDS-polyacrylamide gels and analyzed, by Western blotting, with the 9188 anti-αs antibody and the AS/7 antibody (anti-α1, anti-αi1, anti-αi2). These procedures resulted in the identification of polypeptides of approximately 40–44 kDa. Phytomonas adenylyl cyclase could be activated by treatment of membrane preparations with cholera toxin, in the presence of NAD+, while similar treatment with pertussis toxin did not affect this enzyme activity. These studies indicate that in Phytomonas, adenylyl cyclase activity is coupled to an unknown receptor entity through Gαs, proteins.

    Notes: . We describe the in vitro culture of Phytomonas species isolated from Euphorbia characias. The best choice between tested media was SDM-79, in which promastigotes, after 6 days of culture, reached cell densities as high as 4 × 107 cells/ml. Cells growing in LIT or MTL medium showed longer division times and lower cell densities. We succeeded in obtaining Phytomonas sp. amastigote and spheromastigote forms in modified GRACE's medium, yielding transformation rates of up to 70%. Electron microscopy studies were performed in order to characterize the ultrastructural features of these forms obtained in vitro. On the other hand, metabolic studies based on qualitative (nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy) and quantitative metabolic methods (enzymatic assays) showed that promastigote forms secreted mainly ethanol, acetate, glycine, glycerol, piruvate and succinate in SDM-79 medium, whereas the major metabolites found after transformation in modified Grace's medium were ethanol, acetate, glycine, piruvate and smaller amounts of glycerol.

    Notes: Abstract. This paper presents evidence that firm-level productivity increases when the relative wage rises, or the level of unemployment rises. Both facts are consistent with the efficiency wage model. Moreover, there is support for the idea that an increase in the sector's wage with respect to the previous year also increases productivity. We obtain the empirical evidence through a double-hurdle model. We use this estimation technique because it can be established that the differences in productivity between sectors could be explained by differences in effort. It means that some of the industrial sectors of the Spanish economy may pay wage premia while others do not. We also test this implication through panel data.

    Notes: Upper Jurassic phosphate stromatolites of the Almola Sierra (Southern Spain) encrust macrofossils and hardgrounds, and form oncoids included within pelagic, condensed fossiliferous limestones. Their accretion was determined by bacterially mediated precipitation of phosphate, by the trapping and binding of fine siliciclastics and pelagic biomicrite and by the encrustation of benthonic foraminifera. Phosphorous, trace elements and rare-earth elements were concentrated from degraded organic matter and seawater by stromatolite-building communities, which mediated the formation of phosphate-rich and Fe-Al-Si-rich organic gels under oxic conditions, favouring the precipitation of amorphous mineral precursors (ACP and Fe-Al-Si oxyhydroxides). The observed Ce-enrichment for some stromatolites is explained by oxidative scavenging of Ce4+ from seawater by Fe—Mn oxyhydroxides. The bacterially mediated gels were able to migrate and fill the voids of the stromatolite structure, and later changed to carbonate-fluorapatite, haematite and poorly crystalline Fe-rich clays under postoxic conditions. Phosphatization of trapped carbonate particles also occurred. The phosphate stromatolites formed on a sediment-starved pelagic swell, during periods of no carbonate sedimentation and hardground development. Stromatolite lamination provides evidence for rhythmic alternation between bacterially mediated phosphogenesis, sedimentation and erosion, suggesting episodic changes in the sedimentary environment. Although some of the parameters that controlled phosphate precipitation associated with the stromatolites (local high organic productivity, sediment starvation, moderate depth of deposition and physicochemical conditions) were similar to those found in modern and ancient phosphogenic settings, the palaeogeographical framework and the intensity of sedimentary processes were different to those of the World's major phosphorite deposits.

    Notes: Seed populations of Avena sterilis ssp. ludoviciana (Durieu) Nyman were monitored in a naturally occurring infestation throughout its life cycle. Considering the large weed population present (298panicles m−2), total seed production was relatively low: 3838 seeds m−2. Only 68% of these seeds were recovered from the soil surface and a further 3% were removed with wheat grain and straw during harvest operations. The numbers of seeds from the stubble between mid-July and mid-September were relatively low (10%). Ploughing the stubble in October buried most of the recently produced seed rain and resulted in a relatively uniform vertical distribution of the seedbank. Maximum seed persistence in the soil ranged from 27 to 43 months (depending on the experimental technique used to do the study). Seed decline followed an exponential pattern on a yearly basis, with the greatest decline taking place between October and April (57–90% in year 1 and 10–40% in year 2), Between May and September the buried seed populations remained practically constant. Seedbank depletion was primarily due to seedling production (25%) and ‘lethal’ germination (24%). Although the depth of burial had very little effect on seed survival, the mode of seed disappearance was closely related to their depth in the soil. Seed depletion through ‘lethal’ germination increased with increasing depth in the soil, whereas depletion through seedling emergence decreased with increasing depth.

    Notes: A model for simulating surface roughness of an agricultural bare soil is described. The model used a random Boolean function. The primary function was a sphere with radius r lying on a plane. The intensity function, a(r), of the distribution of the sphere radius was described by a(r) =αrβexp(λr)Microtopography data were collected during two sets of field experiments. The distribution of experimental heights was used for fitting the three parameters, (α, β, λ) of the intensity function a(r) with a pseudo-likelihood method. Comparisons between experimental and simulated soil surfaces indicated that the simulated roughness was not unrealistic. However, they also showed that the model is currently limited by the primary function and the intensity function that were chosen.

    Notes: The thermal diffusivity and conductivity of cooked tortillas processed under different conditions were measured at room temperature using a proposed open-photoacoustic cell (OPC) detection technique. Samples were cut from cooked tortillas and exposed to air for different times prior to measurements. Variations in thermal diffusivity inversely correlated with cooking time. Lime appeared to increase the degree of crosslinking, raising thermal diffusivity and decreasing cooking time. By careful process modification a measure of control could be used to improve the heat conduction properties of tortillas.
