    Notes: SiNx:H films with a wide composition range and, some of them, with low oxygen content are deposited at room temperature. The defects observed in the films are attributed to Si-dangling bonds, with a structure depending on film composition. For the N-rich films they are of the form ⋅Si≡(N3), whereas for the films with similar [N]/[Si] ratio but containing oxygen, the predominant defect is proposed to be ⋅Si≡(Si2O), despite of the high N content and the low O content of these films. The spin density of the films has been related to the bonds that hydrogen establishes (either Si–H or N–H), with the maximum value corresponding to the minimum hydrogen content. Both maximum and minimum values, respectively, are obtained at the silicon percolation limit of the Si–Si bonds into the SiNx:H network, x∼1.10. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: An equation of state for a fluid of hard disks is proposed: Z=[1−2η+(2η0−1)(η/η0)2]−1. The exact fit of the second virial coefficient and the existence of a single pole singularity at the close-packing fraction η0 are the only requirements imposed on its construction. A comparison of the prediction of virial coefficients and of the values of the compressibility factor Z with those stemming out of other known equations of state is made. The overall performance of this very simple equation of state is quite satisfactory. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract: φ29 DNA replication starts at both DNA ends by a protein priming mechanism. The formation of the terminal protein-dAMP initiation complex is directed by the second nucleotide from the 3′ end of the template. The transition from protein-primed initiation to normal DNA elongation has been proposed to occur by a sliding-back mechanism that is necessary for maintaining the sequences at the φ29 DNA ends. Structure—function studies have been carried out in the φ29 DNA polymerase. By site-directed mutagenesis of amino acids conserved among distantly related DNA polymerases we have shown that the N-terminal domain of φ29 DNA polymerase contains the 3′–5′ exonuclease activity and the strand-displacement capacity, whereas the C-terminal domain contains the synthetic activities (protein-primed initiation and DNA polymerization). Viral protein p6 stimulates the initiation of φ29 DNA replication. The structure of the protein p6—DNA complex has been determined, as well as the main signals at the φ29 DNA ends recognized by protein p6. The DNA binding domain of protein p6 has been studied. The results indicate that an α-helical structure located in the N-terminal region of protein p6 is involved in DNA binding through the minor groove. The φ29 protein p5 is the single-stranded DNA binding (SSB) protein involved in φ29 DNA replication, by binding to the displaced single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) in the replication intermediates. In addition, protein p5 is able to unwind duplex DNA. The properties of the φ29 SSB—ssDNA complex are described. Using the four viral proteins, terminal protein, DNA polymerase, protein p6 and the SSB protein, it was possible to amplify the 19285-bp φ29 DNA molecule by a factor of 4000 after 1 h of incubation at 30°C. The infectivity of the in vitro amplified DNA was identical to that of φ29 DNA obtained from virions.

    Notes: Ground beef with 26.3% fat was cooked by browning/draining (BD), browning/rinsing (BR), and an oil-extraction method with (OA) or without (ON) meat broth added back. BR caused the most reduction of total fat and cholesterol, whereas ON and OA yielded less cooked meat than BD and BR. ON and OA cooked samples, compared to BD and BR samples, contained more polyunsaturated fatty acids and nonheme iron and had higher TBA values unon extended storage at 4°C. Trained sensory panelists rated BD or BR cooked ground beef more intense in positive flavor note (“cooked beef/brothy”) than ON or OA meat. Likewise, consumers tended to prefer meatloaf, spaghetti sauce, and chili prepared with BD or BR cooked ground beef to those prepared with ON or OA cooked meat.

    Notes: Abstract Aggregation of variables allows to approximate a large scale dynamical system (the micro-system) involving many variables into a reduced system (the macro-system) described by a few number of global variables. Approximate aggregation can be performed when different time scales are involved in the dynamics of the micro-system. Perturbation methods enable to approximate the large micro-system by a macro-system going on at a slow time scale. Aggregation has been performed for systems of ordinary differential equations in which time is a continuous variable. In this contribution, we extend aggregation methods to time-discrete models of population dynamics. Time discrete micro-models with two time scales are presented. We use perturbation methods to obtain a slow macro-model. The asymptotic behaviours of the micro and macro-systems are characterized by the main eigenvalues and the associated eigenvectors. We compare the asymptotic behaviours of both systems which are shown to be similar to a certain order.

    Notes: Abstract The observation of non-corotating shock fronts in interplanetary space is always associated with the previous occurrence of a coronal mass ejection (CME), which is frequently accompanied by a flare or a prominence eruption. When looking at the solar region of origin of these events, a coronal hole is always found. Here we propose a scenario at the Sun where all these related events can find a place.

    Notes: Abstract In this study we analyse the positions of major flares from 1978 and 1979, with respect to the magnetic structure of the solar corona, as described by a potential field model. We find that major flares exhibit no strong association with the neutral line at the chromospheric level. However, when we calculate the neutral line's position at higher and higher altitudes in the corona, we find that major flares show an increasing tendency to be found close to these high-altitude coronal neutral lines. The correlation between flares and higher-altitude coronal neutral lines reaches a maximum at an altitude of 0.35R ⊙, and thereafter decreases as the neutral line is moved out to the source surface at an altitude of 1.50R ⊙. This indicates that major flares are strongly associated with coronal structure at the 0.35R ⊙ level (≈ 250 000 km) - an altitude surprisingly high in the corona. This reinforces the idea that flares are associated with large-scale coronal magnetic fields and also indicates that the region of coronal magnetic topology important to solar flare processes may be larger than previously thought.
