    Notes: The effect of reactant particle size on the kinetics of wave propagation in the thermite system Nb2O5+ Al2Zr + nuAl2O3 (with alumina being a diluent) was investigated. Reactants in three size ranges were utilized: fine (1–3 µm), medium (〈10 µm), and coarse (10–45 µm). Particle size had an effect on the mode and velocity of the self-propagating combustion wave. For fine particles, the combustion wave propagated in a steady-state mode for all values of dilutions investigated (0 ≤ nu ≤ 0.8). For medium particles with nu 〉 0.1 and for all coarse particles, wave propagation was in the spin mode. A significantly large difference between the calculated adiabatic combustion temperatures and the measured values was observed and is attributed to large heat losses arising from very wide reaction zones. For fine particles, the temperature dependence of the wave velocity showed a discontinuity at a temperature corresponding to the formation of the eutectic in the binary ZrO2-Al2O3. The velocity can be more than a factor of 3 higher at the same temperature, depending on the amount of the eutectic liquid. The dependence of the wave velocity on particle size (r) was found to have the form v is proportional to 1/rm with 0.5 〈 m 〈 0.8. The upper limit approximates that of m= 1.0 for diffusion-controlled reaction kinetics, according to reported modeling studies. In all cases, regardless of the mode of wave propagation the reactions resulted in the desired products, Nb + ZrO2+ Al2O3 with a microstructure exhibiting the eutectic of the binary ZrO2-Al2O3.

    Notes: A new formulation of the polarizable continuum method (PCM) is presented to describe the electrostatic interaction between molecular solutes and anisotropic media (e.g., liquid crystals, crystalline matrices). The main features of the PCM (ab initio treatment of solute, cavity of arbitrary shape, dielectric reaction described with apparent charges) are maintained, though in this case polarization charges are present both on the cavity surface and in the bulk of the dielectric. A simplified method, saving about half of the computational time, is also presented. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Gel-type electrolytes based on fluorinated polymers are of interest for electrochemical devices. We present a 7Li–13C solid-state NMR and modulated differential scanning calorimetry (MDSC) study of gel electrolytes based on a copolymer poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVdF)–hexafluoropropylene (HFP) activated with a nonaqueous solution ethylene carbonate (EC)–propylene carbonate (PC)–LiN(CF3SO2)2. We show that the narrowing of the Li lineshape is decoupled from the glass transition. The behavior of the longitudinal relaxation times, T1, confirms that the host polymer matrix simply behaves like a quasiinert cage for the solution. These results are confirmed by 13C NMR at the magic angle (MAS) data, which show that the presence of the polymer does not significantly affect the chemical shift changes induced in the EC/PC carbons by the imide salt. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract.  Polarization phenomena for vector meson production in neutron-proton collisions, , with , are studied for collinear kinematics when the vector mesons are produced at angles or 180° with respect to the momentum of the incoming beam. It is shown that the spin structure of the matrix elements can be parametrized in terms of five independent complex scalar amplitudes whose symmetry properties follow from the isotopic invariance of the strong interaction and from which specific polarization properties can be deduced. The polarization structure functions, calculated in terms of these five independent scalar amplitudes, allow to analyze one and two spin polarization observables in a model independent way.

    Notes: Abstract To define further the character of autoantibodies against the inner ear in patients with inner ear disease, Autoantibodies in sera from 82 patients with inner ear disease were investigated by immunoblotting. The inner ear antigens were extracted from Hartley guinea pigs. Brain, kidney, lung, heart and liver extracts were also prepared. Antibodies against the inner ear were found in 32 of 82 (39%) patients with inner ear disease. These sera reacted with the 30 and 58 kDa bands of the inner ear extracts. The 30 kDa band was detected in sera from patients with various inner ear diseases, while the 58 kDa band reacted with sera of patients with idiopathic progressive sensorineural hearing loss. Only two of the 52 normal control sera had a very faint band at 30 kDa. Sixteen of 32 positive sera were then used to probe Western blots of the brain, kidney, lung, heart and liver extracts. The 58 kDa band was also found in the protein extracts of the brain, the lung, and the liver. On the other hand, preliminary purification of the 30 and 58 kDa proteins from the inner ear extracts were achieved by anion exchange chromatography. These results show that antibodies in sera from patients with inner ear disease reacted with at least two polypeptide bands (30 and 58 kDa) of guinea pig inner ear extracts, and the 58 kDa antigenic epitope was not cochlea specific.

    Notes: Abstract An algorithm to detect depth discontinuities from a stereo pair of images is presented. The algorithm matches individual pixels in corresponding scanline pairs, while allowing occluded pixels to remain unmatched, then propagates the information between scanlines by means of a fast postprocessor. The algorithm handles large untextured regions, uses a measure of pixel dissimilarity that is insensitive to image sampling, and prunes bad search nodes to increase the speed of dynamic programming. The computation is relatively fast, taking about 600 nanoseconds per pixel per disparity on a personal computer. Approximate disparity maps and precise depth discontinuities (along both horizontal and vertical boundaries) are shown for several stereo image pairs containing textured, untextured, fronto-parallel, and slanted objects in indoor and outdoor scenes.
