    Notes: A versatile remotely controlled fast reciprocating Langmuir probe has been developed for the TJ-II stellarator. The main components of the system are a removable head, containing the measurement tips, and a displacement system that enables the probe to be displaced in vacuum. The probe displacement system has two different components: a slow one (course length≤0.8 m) to set the probe at the initial measurement position, and a fast one (run length=0.1 m) to obtain the desired measurements within an adjustable time interval during the plasma discharge. The radial movement of the probe is controlled remotely by means of a programmable logical control system, with a radial resolution of better than 1 mm. The fast displacement of the probe (up to 1.7 m/s) is achieved by using a pneumatic system. Its position as a function of time is monitored by means of the on-line response of a linear resistor attached to the fast displacement system. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A device to obtain an estimate of the spectrum of a time-variable magnetic field has been developed. The amplitude of each spectral component of the magnetic field series is obtained by analyzing with a double demodulation technique the signal generated from a flux-gate-like detector operating in open loop configuration. This device shows a sensitivity of about 1 mV/nT in the range from 0 to 300 Hz. For frequencies higher than 300 Hz the sensitivity decreases, and a correction factor that depends on the transfer function of the electronic device must be applied. The present device can be applied to environmental measurements, industrial applications, traffic control, and scientific research. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In this paper we study the magnetic behavior of amorphous ferromagnetic ribbons having helical anisotropy with the helix axis perpendicular to the sample surface. It is shown that the magnetization processes under the action of a longitudinal magnetic field can be controlled by the nonuniform field produced by an alternating current, of the same frequency than the exciting field, flowing through the sample. Hysteresis loops with very different susceptibilities and coercive fields have been obtained by varying the amplitude of the current intensity and the phase differences between the exciting magnetic field and the current through the sample. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: : This paper describes a procedure to design pluvial drainage systems in such a way as to prevent large excavation volumes and erosive velocities. To this end the storage capacity of the channel system is taken into account. In a preliminary step, the procedure employs an approximate method to determine the channel dimensions. Therefore, the dimensions are adjusted by means of a numerical method of solution of the unsteady flow equations. An example is included.

    Notes: Abstract. Bone loss with aging may be due, at least in part, to inadequate bone formation. Moreover, the process of bone aging is known to follow a different pattern throughout the skeleton. In this study, we examined the cell proliferation rate (area under the cell growth curve, AUC) and the secretion of C-terminal type I procollagen (PICP), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and osteocalcin (OC) in primary cultures of osteoblastic cells from human trabecular bone. Osteoblastic cells were obtained for 168 donors (100 women and 68 men). Ninety-eight bone samples were obtained from subjects undergoing knee arthroplastia, 52 aged 50–70 years (64 ± 5) and 46 over age 70 (73 ± 2). Another 70 bone samples were obtained from subjects undergoing hip arthroplastia; 51 were 50–70 years old (64 ± 4) and 19 were over 70 (75 ± 5). Osteoblastic cells from the older donors had a lower proliferation rate and OC secretion than those from younger subjects. However, ALP secretion was higher in the former subjects, whereas PICP secretion was unchanged. Osteoblastic cells from hip had a lower proliferation rate than those from knee. PICP secretion was also lower and ALP secretion was higher in the former cells. In age-matched cell cultures, osteoblastic cells from the knee had higher proliferation rate and PICP secretion than osteoblastic cells from the hip. However, ALP secretion was lower in knee osteoblastic cells than those from hip only in the younger group. With aging, ALP secretion was found to increase in knee osteoblactic cells, whereas OC secretion decreased in osteoblastic cell cultures from the hip. Our findings suggest that bone loss with aging may be accounted for, at least in part, by a decreased osteoblastic cell proliferation and an increased osteoblastic maturation. In addition, our data indicate that these changes with aging do not occur similarly at different skeletal sites.

    Notes: Abstract. The effects of a long-term blockade of L-type Ca2+ channels on membrane currents and on the number of dihydropyridine binding sites were investigated in skeletal muscle fibers. Ca2+ currents (I Ca) and intramembrane charge movement were monitored using a voltage-clamp technique. The peak amplitude of I Ca increased by more than 40% in fibers that were previously incubated for 24 hr in solutions containing the organic Ca2+ channel blocker nifedipine or in Ca2+-free conditions. A similar incubation period with Cd2+, an inorganic blocker, produced a moderate increase of 20% in peak I Ca. The maximum mobilized charge (Q max) increased by 50% in fibers preincubated in Ca2+-free solutions or in the presence of Cd2+. Microsomal preparations from frog skeletal muscle were isolated by differential centrifugation. Preincubation with Cd2+ prior to the isolation of the microsomal fraction doubled the number of 3H-PN200-110 binding sites and produced a similar increase in the values of the dissociation constant. The increase in the number of binding sites is consistent with the increase in the peak amplitude of I Ca as well as with the increase in Q max.

    Notes: Abstract Outdoor chemostat cultures of the marine microalgaIsochrysis galbana at constant dilution rate (0.034 h−1 ) have been carried out under different weather conditions. Steady-state biomass concentrations were 1.61±0.03 kg m−3 in May and 0.95±0.04 kg m−3 in July, resulting in biomass output rates of 0.54 kg m−3 d−1 and 0.32 kg m−3 d−1 in May and July, respectively. Two patterns of daily variation with the solar cycle were observed in the fatty acid content. Saturated and mono-unsaturated fatty acids (16:0 and 16:1n7) show significant variation with the solar cycle, associated with short-term changes in environmental factors. Palmitic and palmitoleic acids are generated during daylight and consumed during the dark period. However, polyunsaturated fatty acids do not show a significant response to the solar cycle and their changes are associated with long-term variation in environmental factors. The maximum EPA productivity was obtained in May, 14.1 g m−3 d−1, which is close to that found in the literature for indoor continuous cultures. Nonetheless, the outdoor EPA content (up to 2.61 % d.wt) was lower than the indoor EPA content from a previous study (5% d.wt).

    Notes: Abstract Prunus necrotic ringspot Ilarvirus (PNRSV) is a pollen and seed-borne ilarvirus affecting most Prunus spp. The location of the virus in infected nectarine pollen grains was investigated by molecular hybridisation, RT-PCR and in situ hybridisation. The first two approaches revealed an internal location of the virus. In situ hybridisation demonstrated the virus in the bicellular pollen grain, where it was present in the cytoplasm of the vegetative cell but not in the generative cell. This result seems to indicate that the sperm cells, formed by the mitosis of the generative cell, are not involved in virus transmission to seed. Other possible mechanisms are discussed.
