Notes: Abstract. At present about half of the N fertilizer used in China is as urea. However, recovery of urea N in crops is often limited to 30–40%. Application of urea in combination with hydroquinone plus dicyandiamide (U-HQ-DCD) gave an improved urea-N recovery and grain yield by spring wheat in a pot experiment. The apparent total urea-N recovery was 69% and 73% of this recovered N was found in the grain. The grain yield was 32% higher than in the treatment where urea was applied without inhibitors. The application of hydroquinone and dicyandiamide also resulted in a smaller soil nitrate content, which might restrict post-harvest leaching of N. Another beneficial effect of these inhibitors was that the N2O emission from the soil—plant system was reduced by 35% compared to the treatment where only urea was applied. The use of urea in combination with hydroquinone plus encapsulated calcium carbide gave smaller beneficial effects.

Notes: Two all-organic complexes, MC+TCNQ and BBDN+TCNQ, with electrical bistable states at room temperature have been discovered. The resistivity of these thin films prepared in vacuum can be transferred from high to low under a voltage of few volts. The transition time is 〈100 ns. Therefore, both materials are suitable for making write-once read-only memories. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have performed magnetotransport studies on AlGaN/GaN heterostructures at low temperature and magnetic field up to 30 T. The integer quantum Hall effect is observed in two-dimensional electron gas at the AlGaN/GaN interface. From the temperature dependence of the low-field Shubnikov–de Hass oscillations, a carrier effective mass of m*=0.228me is obtained. Dingle plots of our resistivity data show inhomogeneity in the two-dimensional electron gas. Finally, we found that for electronic density as high as 5.47×1012 cm−2, only the lowest subband in the quantum well is occupied. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract A dynamic Monte-Carlo program, including an improved BIGS (Bombardment-Induced Gibbsian Segregation) model was employed to study the matrix effect of BIGS and its influence on Cu depletion at the subsurface under 1 keV Ar-ion bombardment of a Cu−Ni alloy. The calculation results show that not only at high fluences (the steady state) but also at low fluences, the Cu subsurface depletion depends on its bulk composition. This is because the atomic jump rateW 21 of Cu from the second layer to the first layer is correlated to Cu bulk composition at any fluence. We also found that the product of the non-segregating species concentration at the first layer with the segregating species concentration at the second layer plays a more important role than other parameters in determiningW 21 under low current conditions.

Notes: Abstract  The structures of deuterated pyrochroite, Mn(OD)2 and β−Cο(OD)2 have been refined using the Rietveld method and neutron powder diffraction data collected in an opposed-anvil high pressure (Paris-Edinburgh) cell from room pressure to 9 GPa. The equation of state for Mn(OD)2 was determined (K=41(3) GPa for fixed K′=4.7) and found to be consistent with previous studies of the isostructural brucite, Mg(OD)2. The compressibility of β−Cο(OD)2 on the other hand is apparently anomalous. The c-axis initially decreases at 3 times the rate of decrease of the a-axis; the ratio decreases to about 1.5 at an estimated 6 GPa before increasing again beyond this pressure. There is no obvious corresponding anomaly in the details of the atomic structure. In both materials there is an increase in the D-site disorder with pressure. A split-site model for the D-positions best fits the data at pressures above 8 GPa. There is no statistically significant increase in the O-D interatomic distance at increased pressure while the hydrogen bonding interaction D...O appears to increase as this distance decreases and the O-D...O angle increases. The intramolecular O-D bond valences, determined indirectly from the intermolecular D...O distances, decrease steadily for both materials as pressure is increased.

Notes: Abstract  This study was intended to investigate the extent of genetic differentiation in parental lines of rice hybrids and to analyze the genetic basis underlying the fertility phenomenon in distant crosses. Two subsets of rice material (111 entries in total) were used, including 81 doubled-haploid (DH) lines and 30 Indica and Japonica rice varieties or lines (as a control). The DH lines was derived from a heterotic Indica/Japonica cross (Gui630/02428) by anther culture. The materials in the control represent a broad spectrum of the Asian cultivated rice gene pool including landraces, primitive cultivars, historically important cultivars, modern elite cultivars, super rice and parents of superior hybrids. In accordance with the NC II design, 57 out of the DH lines were test-crossed to two important wide compatibility lines: photoperiod-sensitive genetic male sterile (PGMS) line N422s and thermo-sensitive genetic male sterile (TGMS) line Peiai64s. The F1s and their parents, 182 entries in total, were examined for the performance of seven traits in a replicated field trial. All the rice materials was surveyed for polymorphisms using 92 RFLP markers selected from two published molecular marker linkage maps. Genotypes of the F1 hybrids at the molecular-marker loci were deduced from the parental genotypes. The analysis showed that there were two types of genetic differentiation in the two subsets of rice material; that is, qualitative differentiation in the control and quantitative differentiation in the DH lines. In addition, favorable genic interactions (both intra- or inter-locus) contributed to better increase the fertility in hybrids of distant crosses through incorporation of a wide-compatibility line as the female parent. Favorable genic interactions can be applied in hybrid rice breeding programs by selecting parents with an appropriate extent of genetic differentiation.
