Notes: A general theory is developed for determining the most efficient magnetic structure that generates a specified magnetic field. The structure is assumed to be composed of linear, isotropic magnetized material, occupying a given geometrical region. The efficiency is quantified by a figure of merit defined as the external field energy produced by the magnet divided by the maximum amount of energy that can be stored by the magnetized material. A set of equations is derived that determines the distribution of remanence needed to maximize this figure of merit, and several theorems concerning maximally efficient structures are given. Simple two-dimensional examples are used to illustrate the theory. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Highly uniform magnetic fields for nuclear-magnetic-resonance imaging require accurate design of the pole pieces of a permanent magnet structure. We present a mathematical theory of pole pieces viewed as filters that eliminate selected harmonics of an expansion of the field distortion. Previous work has discussed two types of filters: active pole pieces and passive pole pieces. These are reviewed and a third type of filter, the hybrid pole piece, is introduced. The hybrid pole piece provides distinct advantages by combining features of both active and passive pole pieces. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Data from 10 185 gillnetted brown trout (Salmo trutta L.) and 5777 Arctic charr [Salvelinus alpinus (L.)] were analysed. Relative to mesh size, the most efficiently caught fish length (the modal length) was somewhat larger with floated nets than with smaller nets placed on the bottom. There were no such consistent differences between the two species. Fish that exceeded the modal lengths were caught more efficiently than smaller fish. The relationship of most efficient mesh size to fish length and condition factor fitted excellently to a linear equation. Based on this equation, the selectivity curve for Arctic charr gillnetted in the Nesjø reservoir, the different efficiency of nets of 0.1 and 0.17mm twine and an equation expressing the increasing height of the selectivity curve with increasing mesh size, a model is presented to compare length frequencies and total numbers of gillnet catches taken with any combination of mesh sizes.

Notes: Five hundred pre-measured brown trout (Salmo trutta), 20 of each cm-class from 5 to 29 inclusive, were released. They were recaptured with gillnets of mesh size 8.0, 10.5, 16.0, 19.5 and 24.0 mm, measured between adjacent knots. The nets were made of clear, nylon monofilament. The modal lengths and the general shape of the selectivity curves were in agreement with earlier findings. The height of the selectivity curve (S) increased exponentially with mesh size in mm (M): S= 0.047e0.075M.

Notes: Hatchery brown trout Salmo trutta (1406) of length 5–20 cm were released into a 7.5 ha shallow lake. They were recaptured with 28 multimesh gillnets of a type proposed for use in the Nordic countries and 42 single gillnets of mesh size 8–22 mm (knot to knot). Corrected for the effect of different twine thicknesses, the single nets showed the highest selectivity for 16.5 mm and smaller meshes and the multimesh nets for the larger meshes. The height of the selectivity curves increased exponentially with mesh size, and most distinctly for the multimesh nets. Over a limited range of mesh sizes the selectivity of the two types of net did not differ much. Extended over mesh sizes 10.0–55.0 mm, the catching abilities of the two types of net became considerably different.

Notes: Abstract Objective: The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of route of administration of erythropoietin (EPO) on the dose requirement in dialysis patients after intravenous (IV) and subcutaneous (SC) therapy. Methods: The study was performed as a single centre, prospective, open, combined parallel and cross-over study of 50 dialysis patients, consecutively randomised to IV or SC treatment with EPO. The initial dose was 40 U⋅kg−1 3-times weekly, adjusted to increase haemoglobin (Hgb) from a median 5.3 mmol⋅l−1 to a target of haemoglobin 6.5–7.5 mmol⋅l−1. After reaching the target level, the haemoglobin was maintained for 4 months (Period 1). Then IV and SC treatment was switched for a further 4 months (Period 2). The study included high risk patients. The adjustment period was completed by 38 patients, Period one by 32 patients (IV/SC = 15/17; male/female = 19/13; age = 54 (24– 71) y), and Period two by 22 patients. Results: No significant difference was found between the two groups in the reticulocyte response, the rate of Hgb increase (IV 0.7 versus SC 0.5, mmol⋅l−1⋅ month−1), time to reach target level (IV 43 versus SC 60 days), or total EPO dose per increase in haemoglobin to target level (IV 663 versus SC 946 (U⋅kg−1) per (mmol Hgb⋅l−1). The overall median maintenance dose during the last month of the two four month periods was 105 (range IV 51–336) U⋅kg−1⋅w−1 and SC 104 (range 21–321) U⋅kg−1⋅w−1. Trough serum EPO levels were significantly higher during SC treatment. The blood pressure did not change significantly from the base level after either route of administration; start 133/80 versus 143/80 mmHg, target 127/78 versus 154/85 mmHg, and maintenance period 140/84 versus 142/85 mmHg. Thus, three-times weekly IV or SC EPO did not differ significantly in efficacy or in the effect on blood pressure in dialysis patients.

Notes: Abstract Objective: In a double blind, randomised, placebo-controlled, cross-over study 12 healthy male volunteers were allocated to receive felodipine + placebo, cyclosporine + placebo, and felodipine + cyclosporine in order to investigate the interaction between the calcium channel blocker felodipine and cyclosporine as it affects the pharmacokinetics of felodipine, dehydrofelodipine, and cyclosporine, and 24-hour blood pressure measurements. Methods: Single doses of cyclosporine (capsules, 5 mg/kg body weight) and of felodipine (extended release (ER) tablets 10 mg) were given at a 1–2 week interval. Plasma drug concentrations were followed for 2 days after drug intake. Results: For cyclosporine, Cmax was increased after combined treatment (16%) compared to cyclosporine alone, but felodipine did not influence other kinetic parameters of cyclosporine. For felodipine, combined treatment with cyclosporine and felodipine increased AUC and Cmax (58% and 151%, respectively) and lowered mean residence time (24%) significantly compared to felodipine alone. For the metabolite dehydrofelodipine, too, AUC and Cmax were increased after the combined treatment (43% and 94%, respectively). Mean 24-hour systolic and diastolic blood pressures were significantly lower after felodipine, both when felodipine was given alone (121/68 mmHg) and in combination with cyclosporine (122/68 mmHg) compared to cyclosporine alone (127/73 mmHg). Conclusion: A combined single dose of cyclosporine and felodipine in healthy subjects increased the AUC and Cmax of felodipine suggesting a cyclosporine-induced decrease in the first-pass metabolism of felodipine, whereas the AUC of cyclosporine was only slightly increased by felodipine.

Notes: Abstract   Different cultivars/transgenic lines of oilseed rape (Brassica napus) were crossed (as females) with different cultivars/populations of Brassica campestris. All cross combinations produced seed, with an average seed set per pollination of 9.8. Backcrossing of selected interspecific hybrids (as females) to B. campestris resulted in a much lower seed set, average 0.7 seed per pollination. In the single backcross progeny where a large enough population (92 plants) was obtained for analysis, 33 B. napus-specific RAPD markers were investigated to determine the extent of transfer of oilseed rape genetic material into this population. Markers were transferred to the backcross generation with frequencies ranging from 26% to 91%. Almost all of the markers (30/33) were transferred in a frequency not significantly different from 50%. Analysis of the pairwise segregation of markers revealed that 23 markers could be assigned to six linkage groups, most probably reflecting six B. napus C-chromosomes. The presence of backcross plants with recombinant genotypes suggests that complex genetic processes can take place during interspecific hybridisation and backcrossing in these Brassica species. The implications of our results for the possible choice of integration sites of transgenes in oilseed rape are discussed.
