    Description: Muscle enhancer factor-2A (MEF2A), a member of the MADS family, induced myogenic development when ectopically expressed in clones of nonmuscle cells of human clones, a function previously limited to the muscle basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) proteins. During myogenesis, MEF2A and bHLH proteins cooperatively activate skeletal muscle genes and physically interact through the MADS domain of MEF2A and the three myogenic amino acids of the muscle bHLH proteins.     Description: The terminal differentiation of mammalian muscle cells requires the tumor suppressor retinoblastoma protein (Rb). Unlike their wild-type counterparts, multinucleated myotubes from mouse cells deficient in Rb (Rb-/-) were induced by serum to re-enter the cell cycle. Development of the myogenic phenotype in Rb-/- cells correlated with increased expression of p107, which interacted with myogenic transcription factors. Serum-induced cell cycle reentry, on the other hand, correlated with decreased p107 expression.     Description: We present an analysis of CCD images of more than 100 quasars; many of the objects have been or will be observed in the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Key Project Quasar Absorption-Line Survey. The data set consists of B, g, and i photometry of 117 quasars and deeper g (limiting magnitude of approximately equal 22) images of 101 quasar fields. Positions accurate to approximately equal 1 sec, measured with the Space Telescope Science Institute's Astrometric Support Program, are listed for all of the quasars in this study. Positions, magnitudes, and classifications of stars and galaxies located within approximately equal 100 sec of the quasars are given for all of the deep g data. The positions of the stars and galaxies relative to the quasar are accurate to approximately equal 0.5 sec. The results presented here can be used to prepare spectroscopic programs designed to obtain redshifts of galaxies in the fields of these quasars.

    Description: We analyze the ultraviolet (UV) emission line and continuum properties of five low-redshift active galactic nuclei (four luminous quasars: PKS 0405-123, H1821 + 643, PG 0953 + 414, and 3C 273, and one bright Seyfert 1 galaxy: Mrk 205). The HST spectra have higher signal-to-noise ratios (typically approximately 60 per resolution element) and spectral resolution (R = 1300) than all previously published UV spectra used to study the emission characteristics of active galactic nuclei. We include in the analysis ground-based optical spectra covering H beta and the narrow (O III) lambda lambda 4959, 5007 doublet. New results are obtained and presented.

    Description: We present Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and quasi-simultaneous ground-based observations of the z = 0.3252 QSO PG 2251+113. We find a correlation between line widths and the critical density for de-excitation of the forbidden emission lines observed in this object. We can show that this correlation also applies to the semiforbidden and possibly also the permitted lines which arise in the broad emission-line region. While this result was predicted from statistical studies, it has never previously been shown to hold in detail in any individual object. This relationship between the narrow and broad emission-line regions may help constrain dynamical models of both regions. We examine the implications of this result for a simple radial infall model of the emitting gas developed to explain the origin of narrow-line profiles.
