Notes: The fluttering oscillations that have long been seen in falling sheets of water have recently been subjected to detailed theoretical analysis. In this study stability criteria for these oscillations are derived and discussed. These criteria provide insight into the physical mechanisms of the instability and may be employed in the design of fluttering waterfall systems.

Notes: Low-temperature magnetic properties and crystal structures of melt-spun Sm2Co7B3 compound were characterized. The magnetic measurements in the temperature range 77–450 K indicated that a spin reorientation took place at about 150–160 K. A huge anisotropy was observed (Ha=135 kOe at 300 K, 725 kOe at 77 K) for Sm2Co7B3, although the magnetic moment is rather low. The crystal structure of the Sm2Co7B3 compound was analyzed in detail by Rietveld analysis of powder diffraction for the first time, and revealed that B(4h) atoms are not placed in the Sm(2e) layer but in between the Sm(2e) and Co(6i1) layers.

Notes: The line shape of electromodulation in uniform electric field of δ-doped GaAs has been calculated and compared with the experiments. The calculations show that the Franz–Keldysh oscillations (FKO) beats observed in experiments are contributed form the interference of heavy-hole and light-hole transitions. The calculations also show that the linear equation of extrema is a good approximation to analyze the electric field from the FKO line shape, although the equation only considers the heavy-hole transition.

Notes: The effects of spontaneous emission on the threshold characteristics of multimode laser oscillators with mixed line broadening are considered in detail. Most previous studies of multimode laser operation have emphasized the two limits of homogeneous and inhomogeneous broadening. With homogeneous broadening there is a tendency for oscillation in a single longitudinal mode, while in the inhomogeneous limit oscillation over much of the gain spectrum is expected. All practical lasers are somewhere between these limits, and this study explores the mode characteristics of lasers with mixed line broadening. Special attention is given to the important practical case of semiconductor diode lasers, and band-to-band absorption is fully included.

Notes: A process for making Alnico magnets (grade 5–8) via rapid solidification technology has been developed. The process includes extractive melt spinning of alloy powders, press forming, heat treatment under a magnetic field, and aging. The Alnico 5 magnets made by this process showed superior magnetic properties to those of cast magnet of the corresponding composition. The superior magnetic properties of the sintered magnets with Br=13.2 kG, Hc=680 Oe, and (BH)max=6.02 MGOe are due to the spinodal decomposition which is completely free of γ phase.

Notes: Magnetic exchange coupling in metallic superlattices of [Dy||Er], grown by molecular-beam epitaxy, has been examined by neutron diffraction. In a superlattice of 65-A(ring) layers of Dy and 55-A(ring) layers of Er, distinct ordering temperatures were observed for the Dy and Er layers. Basal plane helical ordering of the Dy layers was initiated at temperatures close to TN for bulk Dy (178 K) with a long-range interaction, preserving both phase and chirality, mediated through the Er layers. At a temperature near 70 K, the helical coupling of the Dy spins is replaced by an antiferromagnetic coupling of adjacent ferromagnetically ordered Dy layers coexisting with a remanent helical order. At a temperature well below TN of bulk Er, c-axis ordering of the Er spins occurs in the superlattice, and in measurements at 10 K there is evidence of basal plane moment ordering in the Er.

Notes: The gyrokinetic and gyrofluid models show the most promise for large scale simulations of tokamak microturbulence. This paper discusses detailed comparisons of these two complementary approaches. Past comparisons with linear theory have been fairly good, therefore the emphasis here is on nonlinear comparisons. Simulations include simple two-dimensional slab test cases, turbulent three-dimensional slab cases, and toroidal cases, each modeling the nonlinear evolution of the ion temperature gradient instability. There is good agreement in both turbulent and coherent nonlinear slab comparisons in terms of the ion heat flux, both in magnitude and scaling with magnetic shear. However, the nonlinear saturation level for ||Φ|| in the slab comparisons shows differences of approximately 40%. Preliminary toroidal comparisons show agreement within 50%, in terms of ion heat flux and saturation level.

Notes: We have investigated the electrical properties of Tl-Ba-Ca-Cu-O high-Tc superconductor bicrystal grain boundary junctions. The behavior of the transport parameters is very similar to those obtained in YBaCuO7−δ junctions. In particular, the temperature dependence of the critical current and the scaling behavior of the critical current density as a function of the misorientation angle were analyzed. Relatively good control of the transport parameters as a function of the misorientation angle has been achieved. The current-voltage characteristics showed a resistively shunted junction model-like behavior at large angles (θ≥20°); at lower angles, the characteristics were more flux-flow like. Preliminary results on noise characteristics are also presented.
