Notes: Ohmic plasma size scans have been carried out in the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) [Fusion Technol. 21, 1324 (1992)] to measure the influence of the major radius upon energy confinement. The major radius, minor radius, and aspect ratio were varied over wide ranges (R=2.08–3.2 m, a=0.4–0.9 m, and R/a=2.9–8.0) at constant qc. The energy confinement determined from kinetic diagnostics varies strongly with major radius. The data set is less well suited to determine minor radius scaling, but it appears to be distinctly weaker than the major radius scaling. The anomaly in ion thermal conductivity over neoclassical predictions appears to decline with increasing aspect ratio, which is a better ordering parameter for the magnitude of the anomaly than either the minor radius or the major radius. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Beta-coincidentγ-rays were measured from implanted44V and42Sc nuclei. These were selected after58Ni+nickel reactions by means of the LISE3 spectrometer at GANIL. The production of the isomeric states was identified by detecting their typicalβ-delayedγ-ray cascades. From the intensities of the detectedγ-lines the ratio between isomer and ground-state production of44V follows to be 1 to 3.0(4).

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Porphyry Cu-Au Vererzung im Goonumbla Distrikt in New South Wales, Australien, sitzt in oberordovizischen (ca. 439.2 ± 1.2 Ma) Shoshoniten auf.
Notes: Summary The Goonumbla porphyry copper-gold deposit in N.S.W., Australia, is hosted by late Ordovician (439.2 ± 1.2 Ma)shoshonitic igneous rocks. In terms of their petrography, the rocks vary from andesitic to dacitic lavas and tuffs which are partly intruded by monzonite stocks; they are characterized by high and variable Al2O3 (13.4–19.9 wt%), very high K2O values (up to 6.8 wt%), and high K2O/Na2O ratios (0.58–1.48), which are typical for the shoshonite association. The rocks also have enriched LILE concentrations (Ba up to 1200 ppm, Sr up to 1350 ppm), low HFSE (TiO2 〈 0.67 wt%, Zr 〈 125 ppm, Nb 〈 10 ppm, Hf 〈 3.4 ppm), and very low LREE (La 〈 22.4 ppm, Ce 〈 31 ppm), which are typical for potassic volcanic rocks formed in alate oceanic-arc setting. Mineral chemistry of selected magmatic mica and apatite phenocrysts from host rocks reveals relatively high SrO and BaO contents (micas: ∼ 0.15 wt% and up to 0.28 wt%, respectively; apatites: up to 0.28 wt% and 0.19 wt%, respectively) and very high halogen concentrations. Micas are characterized by up to 3.9 wt% F and 0.14 wt% Cl, whereas apatites have up to 3.6 wt% F and 0.68 wt% Cl. These very high halogen contents compared to those from barren intrusions imply that the shoshonitic magmatism was the source of mineralization. Copper-gold mineralization consists mainly of bornite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite and minor pyrite and tetrahedrite. Native gold occurs mainly as minute grains within silicates of the host rocks, and more rarely as fine inclusions in the sulphides. Mineralization is accompanied by wallrock alteration comprising a spatially restricted potassic type and a regional propylitic alteration type. Thus, the porphyry copper-gold deposit in the Goonumbla district can be viewed as an additional example of a worldwide association between potassic/shoshonitic magmatism and base- and precious-metal mineralization. More specifically, it appears to be the oldest recorded example of a shoshontie-associated porphyry Cu-Au deposit from a late oceanic-arc setting, a possible modern analogue being Ladolam at Lihir Island, Papua New Guinea

Notes: Abstract Beta-coincidentγ-rays have been measured from implanted pure samples of12Be separated at the LISE3 spectrometer at GANIL. An intensity of 0.040(26) % can be estimated for the branching ratio of the isospin forbidden pure-Fermi transition to the 0+ excited state of12B and of 0.008(6)% of the transition to the 1−1 excited state. Both are taken to represent upper limits. The half-life has been re-measured to be 26.1(2.4) ms.

Notes: Various derivatives of a set of three isomeric (linear and branched) pentasaccharides (LNF-1, LNF-2 and LNF-3) were prepared and investigated by high-performance tandem mass spectrometry in order to compare their collision-induced dissociation (CID) behaviour. The fast atom bombardment tandem mass spectra of [M + H]+ ions of peracetylated derivatives mainly display fragments containing the non-reducing terminus (B-type ions) and allow a straightforward assignment of sugar sequence and branching together with the identification of some interglycosidic linkages. Permethylated derivatives, which better accommodate the mass range of tandem mass spectrometers in the case of larger oligosaccharides, yield similar results, i.e. predominance of B ions, but the necessary information has to be retrieved from incomplete Bi and Yi ion series. By contrast, CID of permethyl or peracetyl derivatives carrying a preformed charge due to prior reductive amination of the oligosaccharides with trimethyl(p-aminophenyl)ammonium chloride yields exclusively fragment ions comprising the reducing end. In this case, the four distinct series of fragments observed involve charge-remote fragmentation processes. As a consequence, the spectral patterns are not significantly affected by the nature of the sugar O-substituents additionally introduced (i.e. methyl or acetyl).

Notes: Mass spectrometric analysis of the recombinant hybrid plasminogen activator K2tu-PA at the native glycoprotein and corresponding protein level (high mass) is described. For gross structural characterization of the major glycotypes present, a combination of enzymatic degradation and matrix-assisted laser desorption mass spectrometric analysis of the products proved convenient. In this way, mono- and di-N-glycosylated one- and two-chain molecules, unresolved in the spectra of native material, were identified, with the one-chain type monoglycosylated at Asn247 representing the major component. Actual detection of resolved original glycoforms, or unresolved groups thereof when composed of isobaric species, and their assignments regarding antennicity and degree of sialylation were possible by electrospray mass spectrometry for the major monoglycosylated one-chain species. Desialation also allowed detection of the diglycosylated one-chain species as a minor constituent. The electrospray mass spectrometric results were correlated with structural and quantitative data available from a parallel high-performance liquid chromatographic and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance study performed at the glycan (low mass) level on liberated individual carbohydrate components. The results of the two studies showed full consistency in all respects amenable to evaluation, i.e. excellent agreement for the assignments of antennicity and degree of sialylation of the major glycan components, and good agreement for the determination of proportions in which these were present in the major monoglycosylated glycoprotein. This provided a sound basis for direct glycoform profiling by electrospray mass spectrometry. Typical applications to batch quality control and to structural characterization of nonstandard material are shown.

Description / Table of Contents: On the Sodium Tetrahydroxoaluminate Chloride Na2[Al(OH)4]ClThe hitherto unknown compound Na2[Al(OH)4]Cl was prepared by crystallisation from a NaCl containing sodium aluminate solution. According to the X-ray single crystal investigation (tetragonal, space group P4/nmm, a = 7.541 Å, c = 5.059 Å, Z = 2) the compound represents the first example of a crystalline hydroxoaluminate with monomeric [Al(OH)4]- anions. Cl- shows a quadratic anti prismatic coordination to 4 Na+ and over hydrogen bonds to 4 O2- while Na+ is octahedrally coordinated by 4 O2- and 2 Cl- (axial). The results of the crystal structure analysis are confirmed by 27Al and 23Na MAS NMR investigations. Na2[Al(OH)4]Cl decomposes at about 200°C without intermediates under formation of β-NaAlO2 and NaCl.
