Notes: We have prepared two new tetracyclic phenylboronic esters 4 and 5 derived from myo-inositol and from 1,2-O-isopropylidene-myo-inositol, respectively. The structures of these compounds were established from NMR and IR spectra, elemental analyses, and an X-ray diffraction study in the case of 4. Compound 4 is a tetracyclic derivative of the less stable conformer of inositol (five axial hydroxy groups and one equatorial) with two dioxaboroline rings at opposite faces of the six-membered ring, one formed between the boron atom and the axial hydroxyl groups at C-3 and C-5 and the other between the boron atom and the hydroxyl groups at C-4 and C-6, and a dioxaborolidine ring bridging C-1 and C-2 at axial and equatorial positions. A similar structure was found for 5 with the difference that bridging C-1 and C-2 there is a dioxolane ring. The boron atoms are planar with their attached atoms, stabilized by retrocoordination between the boron and oxygen and carbon atoms, respectively. The two phenyl rings that are in the same face of the molecule are essentially parallel, with a dihedral angle between planes of 28.26 ± 0.79°.

Notes: The main fragmentation pathway of vinyl triflates in mass spectra involves the loss of CF3SO2·, followed by the loss of olefin and/or CO. The loss of TfOH takes place with fragmentation of a vinylic C—H bond. TfOH2+ ions are formed via regiospecific double hydrogen transfer from five- and six-membered cyclic triflates.

Notes: Abstract An experimental ‘closed’ rearing system, where egg and larval manipulations were eliminated, was developed for thein vitro rearing ofCatolaccus grandis (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) Burks, an important ectoparasitoid of the cotton boll weevil,Anthonomus grandis Boheman. In this rearing model, n-hexane (a synthetic ovipositional stimulant for this parasitoid), was smeared on the Parafilm® cover of a modified rearing chamber (a Multiwell®) tissue culture plate) to induce the deposition of uncontaminated eggs, on the inner side of this waxy membrane, and on or around an agar retained diet that had been dispensed into the individual chamber wells. When the efficiency of thein vitro rearing system was compared to the currentin vivo rearing method for this species, the duration of the life cycle was significantly shorter in parasitoids rearedin vivo, but this difference was less than one day (17.8 vs 17.1 days, respectively). On the other hand, the number of eggs laid in thein vitro rearing chamber during a 4 h period wasc. 2.5 times greater than in the conventional in vivo rearing apparatus, and adult yields werec. 25% greater when using thein vitro closed rearing method. Male to female ratios werec. 1∶9 when rearedin vitro as compared to 1.0∶1.5 for those rearedin vivo. There were no apparent adverse effects of thisin vitro rearing system on the parasitoid's general behavior and reproduction after two consecutive generations.

Notes: Abstract Oviposition behavior was elicited fromCatolaccus grandis (Burks) (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) females, an ectoparasitoid of the boll weevil,Anthonomus grandis Boheman (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), by smears of freshly cut cotton bolls or smears of extracts prepared with boll weevil damaged or undamaged cotton boll tissues. Oviposition behavior was also elicited fromC. grandis females by smears made withn-pentane,n-hexane,n-heptane, and isooctane. This is the first report of oviposition behavior elicited for any parasitoid by these short-chain saturated hydrocarbons (alkanes), introducing a new concept on the chemical mediation of parasitoid behavior during host selection. Oviposition behavior was also elicited fromC. grandis females by volatiles emanating from an artificial diet devoid of insect components that was specifically developed for the in vitro rearing of ectoparasitoids. The possible use of a synergistic combination ofn-hexane and diet to optimize the mechanized production of noncontaminated eggs is also discussed.

Notes: Elimination of H2 from the imidazole - borane adduct 1 leads to a mixture of the imidazaboles 2 and 2′. The symmetrical isomer 2 (two H2BNC fragments) is isolated in pure state and characterized by an X-ray structure analysis (monoclinic, space group P21). 2-(Trimethylstannyl)thiazole (3a) and 1-methyl-5-(trimethylstannyl)-1,2,4-triazole (3b) react with triethylborane to form adducts 4 from which, in the presence of an excess of Et3B, tetraalkyltin is elimated to give the thiazabole 5a and the triazabole 5b, respectively. Multinuclear 1H-, 11B-, 13C-, 14N-, and 119Sn-NMR spectroscopy serve for following the reactions (compounds 3 to 5) and to characterize all final products.

Notes: Time-dependent viscous flows driven by capillarity act to minimize the surface area of a fluid bounded in a plane geometry with initial gradients in surface curvature. These free-surface flows are solved by a finite-element model applied to describe the viscous sintering of two-dimensional ceramic particles. The numerical model is validated by comparison to the analytical solution obtained by Hopper (1990) for the coalescence of two infinite cylinders of equal cross section and is applied to several other geometries pertinent to the study of particle sintering for which analytical results are not available. Details of the flow fields and morphological evolution lend insight to the physical behavior of these systems and provide a basis for the more complete understanding of viscous sintering phenomena.

Notes: The kinetics of the pseudohomogeneous liquid phase synthesis of a high molecular weight ester in a stirred tank reactor using cobalt chloride as catalyst has been studied at various temperatures, catalyst concentrations, and acid/alcohol molar ratios. A kinetic model has been determined that predicts the experimental results quite well.

Notes: Dielectric local molecular motions in the glass transition region of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) have been investigated by means of the isothermal depolarization currents technique. Attention is paid to the influence of the modification of the polymer by the substitution of chlorine atoms of PVC chain by the benzenethiolate group. The results are well described by stretched exponential laws. According to the Ngai's coupling model, the coupling between moving units as well as the activation energy responsible for the motions occurring at primitive level have been calculated for each sample at each temperature. All these parameters are noticeably altered by the modification of PVC. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Blends composed of poly(ethylene terephthalate) and a polyarylate have been melt-mixed and molded in a reciprocating screw injection-molding machine for different plasticization times. Interchange reactions between the blend components occur during processing and at a greater level as the plasticization time increases. These reactions led to a progressive homogenization of the blends as well as to a hindered crystallization of PET. The effect of the plasticization time on the mechanical properties of the blends seems to be a consequence of interchange reactions as well as of the degradation of the blends at the highest plasticization times. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
