Notes: Radiation from 8 to 60 GHz is generated by injecting counterstreaming, high-power (up to 50 keV and 4 A) electron beams into an unmagnetized, plasma-loaded waveguide. The radiation is emitted at twice the plasma frequency and is amplitude modulated on the ion plasma frequency time scale. The beam-to-millimeter-wave power conversion efficiency at 31 GHz is (approximately-greater-than)0.04%. A turbulence theory model is consistent with the radiation characteristics and power scalings.

Notes: A low forward voltage drop plasma switch has been developed for high-efficiency inverter and modulator applications. The switch, called the HOLLOTRON, is based on a grid-controlled, thermionic hollow-cathode discharge. A low forward voltage drop (10–20 V) is achieved by operating the hollow-cathode discharge in a static gas pressure of xenon. The dense plasma generated in the Ba-oxide dispenser hollow cathode is spread over a relatively large control grid area by a diverging magnetic field superimposed on the discharge. Interruption of the discharge current at high current densities ((approximately-greater-than)4 A/cm2) over the grid area is achieved by biasing the control grid sufficiently negative with respect to the plasma. The HOLLOTRON switch has demonstrated voltage stand-off of up to 20 kV, switching times of ≤0.3 μs, and pulse repetition frequencies of 20 kHz at 50% duty.

Notes: Abstract The order-reversing bijection between field extensions and subgroups of the Galois group G follows from the equivalence between the opposite of the category of étale algebras and the category of discrete G-spaces [2]. We show that the basic ingredient for this equivalence of categories, and for various known generalizations, is a factorization system for variable categories.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The Sachzeitwert of energy distribution systems expressed as the delivery price for these systems when franchise agreements end is the net asset value in the sense of saved expenditure with respect to the organizational procedure setting up a new energy distribution network. Conditional equations for the Sachzeitwert are derived from this conclusion on the basis of the net method of investment calculation. Assets-linked and earnings-linked taxes amounting to the Sachzeitwert are payable when the approach is realistic. The cash value difference of the replacement expenditure for new and old systems, calculated using the calculus of the statistical renewal theory, is the significant component of the Sachzeitwert. The theoretical results are deduced with the aid of approximation polynominals for practical evaluation of the plant.

Notes: Abstract Genetic analysis of unusual complex-heterozygous genotypes in populations ofO. grandiflora from Alabama (USA) has shown that these strains are composed of a typicalgrandiflora (B) complex and an altered B complex (designated as BA) which probably contains genetic elements derived from an A genotype such as the beta complex ofO. biennis group 1. Analysis of the meiotic configurations of artificial hybrids between the new strains and a series of complexes of known segmental arrangement allowed determination of the arrangements of the unknown complexes. These data are evidence for origin of the altered B complexes.

Notes: Abstract Plant control of rhizosphere pH is important for nutrient mobilization and uptake, and also affects microbial activity and pathogens in the vicinity of the root. Limited information is available on the ability of plant species and genotypes within a species to induce pH changes in the rhizosphere. A growth chamber study was conducted to characterize patterns of pH change within the rhizosphere of selected genotypes in an alkaline environment with a balanced nutrient supply. After germination in incubators, seedlings of 32 genotypes of maize (Zea mays L.), soybean (Glycine max. L.), sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.), sordan [sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.), sudangrass (Sorghum sudanese L.) hybrid], wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), oats (Avena sativa L.), and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) were transferred into aseptic agar medium (pH 7.6) with bromocresol purple indicator. Ability of the embedded roots to induce rhizosphere pH change was followed by photographing the color change of the bromocresol purple indicator. The pH for selected genotypes at different root zones (maturation, elongation, meristematic) was also monitored by a microelectrode at 1-, 2-, 3- and 4-mm distances from the root surface. Rhizosphere acidification for selected genotypes within a species were in the order: soybean, Hawkeye〉PI-54169; maize, Pioneer-3737〉Pioneer-3732〉CM-37; sordan, S-757〉S-333; sorghum, SC-33-8-9EY≃SC-118-15E; barley, Bowman〉Primus II; oats, Hytest〉SD-84104. The pH patterns within the root system varied from species to species. The highest amount of acidification was found at the elongation and meristematic zones for soybean, while the highest amount of acidification was found at the maturation zone for barley under the same experimental conditions. The agar method allowed the determination of a genotype's capability to induce rhizosphere pH changes while the microelectrode method is necessary for quantifying the spatial variation of specific root developmental zones with high resolution.
