    Notes: We performed numerical diagonalization studies of the periodic Anderson Model on finite chains up to 6 sites, in the integral valence limit for T=0. We find that in the weak coupling (Kondo) region the hybridization between f and conduction electrons induces pronounced correlations between the f spins. These correlations are ferromagnetic for low filling and become antiferromagnetic close to half-filling, with a smooth transition between the limiting cases. In no limit can the physics be completely described by a Ruderman–Kittel–Kasuya–Yosida effective spin Hamiltonian, as f and conduction band electrons are always correlated. To study the onset of long range order we considered also a simpler model for the half-filled case, called "Kondo necklace.'' We studied the model at T=0 by numerical diagonalization and finite-size scaling, on chains up to 12 sites. We find that below a finite critical value of the Kondo coupling there exists a gapless phase with quasi long range antiferromagnetic correlations.

    Notes: Many U and Pr compounds presenting localized electron behavior are conveniently described in terms of crystal electric field (CF) acting on the J=4 ground multiplet. In particular, compounds having the ThCr2Si2- or CaBe2Ge2-type structure are characterized by a tetragonal CF at the magnetic site. We have developed a method allowing us to estimate the five CF parameters in the case of a singlet CF ground state, a situation in which a Van Vleck induced magnetism can exist. This is done by imposing a priori some experimental constraints, in particular a self-consistent condition on the ordered moment and the ordering temperature. We apply the method to UPt2Si2, PrFe2Si2, and PrFe2Ge2. In the U compound we find that the value of the ordered moment can be accounted for in the localized model. For the two Pr compounds, we find that details of the CF splittings can produce the two very different values of the ordered moment observed.

    Notes: Abstract A model is proposed describing the mechanical evolution of a shear zone along compressional and extensional plate boundaries, subject to constant strain rate. The shear zones are assumed as viscoelastic with Maxwell rheology and with elastic and rheological parameters depending on temperature and petrology. Stress and strain are computed as functions of time and depth. For both kinds of boundaries the model reproduces the existence of a shallow seismogenic zone, characterized by a stress concentration. The thickness of the seismogenic layer is evaluated considering the variations of shear stress and frictional strength on faults embedded in the shear zone. Assuming that a fault dislocation takes place, the brittle-ductile transition is assumed to occur at the depth at which the time derivative of total shear stress changes from positive to negative values. The effects of different strain rates and geothermal gradients on the depth of the brittle-ductile transition are studied. The model predictions are consistent with values inferred from seismicity data of different boundary zones.

    Notes: Abstract The intermediate filaments (IF) present in the various cells of human ovaries were studied by immunolocalization using antibodies to cytokeratins (CKs), vimentin, desmin and alpha-smooth muscle (α-SM) actin. Oocytes revealed a single paranuclear aggregate, which reacted with antibodies to CKs 8, 18 and 19 both in adult and fetal ovaries. The existence of this aggregate was also documented by electron microscopy. Ovarian surface epithelium and granulosa cells consistently coexpressed CKs 8, 18, 19 and vimentin. During follicle maturation vimentin remained unchanged in the granulosa layer while CKs content decreased, showing variation in the amount and distribution of the different CK-types. Thecal cells of secondary and mature follicles showed α-SM actin positivity. These contractile fibres increased in mature follicles. Ordinary fibrous stromal cells showed isolated cells which were desmin and α-SM actin positive. A similar pattern of IF expression and distribution existed in all stages of development in fetal and embryonic ovaries. These results indicate that CKs are present in human oocytes and that the coexpression of vimentin and CKs can be regarded as a peculiar feature of all ovarian cell types except oocytes and ordinary stromal cells. Contractile properties have been documented associated with a modification in expression of IF proteins. This is likely to represent an integral part of folliculogenesis along with the functional hormone-dependent changes.

    Notes: Abstract In the grain legume Cicer arietinum L. (chickpea), the seed-derived embryo axes deprived of the apical meristem were able to regenerate adventitious shoots on Murashige and Skoog (1962) medium supplemented with kinetin. This protocol was suitable for Agrobacterium-mediated gene transfer by the co-cultivation technique. Chickpea transgenic plants showed neomycin phosphotransferase II and ß-glucuronidase activities and the presence in their genome of integrated bacterial DNA.

    Notes: Abstract The biodiversity and distributional ecology of amphipod crustaceans were analysed from benthic surveys in 1985 and 1986 along the coast of Portugal, from the Tagus canyon to the coast of Minho, in order to determine their role in the ecosystem of the Portuguese continental self. In samples obtained from different types of substrate between 18 and 545 m, we identified 113 species belonging to 51 genera of 24 families. Seventeen of these species were new records for the Portuguese coast. The relative frequencies and number of individuals of all species were analysed. The genus Ampelisca clearly dominated the group of the most frequent and abundant species, which also exhibited a large range of vertical distribution. Most of the 113 species were found only down to 150 m depth, corresponding roughly to the lower limit of the continental shelf. Fifteen species exhibited clear bathyal traits, being consistently found deeper than 100 m, especially in the Tagus canyon and the upper zone of the continental slope. The most frequent and abundant species were found predominatly or in large numbers in medium to fine sand bottoms. This type of substrate also contained the highest number of species. The granulometric structure of the habitat could constitute the most important factor controlling both biodiversity and development of large amphipod populations, since oxygen level, water exchange, number of available shelters, and probably the quantity and quality of nutritional resources all vary as a function of substrate texture. Because of their dominance in both frequency and abundance, several Ampelisca species may constitute an important food source for many secondary consumers of the shelf sediments, especially for demersal fishes.

    Notes: Abstract Perturbation of the oxidative balance in biological systems plays an important role in numerous pathological states as well as in many physiological processes such as receptor activity. In order to evaluate if oxidative stress induced by menadione influences membrane receptor processes, a study was conducted on the transferrin receptor. Consequently, biochemical, biophysical and ultrastructural studies were carried out on different cell lines. The results obtained seem to indicate that oxidative stress is able of inducing a rapid and specific down-modulation of membrane transferrin receptor due to a block of receptor recycling on the cell surface without affecting binding affinity.
