Notes: This work suggests a theoretical approach for the description of a primary x-ray beam by means of the K fluorescence which it excites on a set of thin targets made of pure elements. Physical quantities, defined as weighted integrals over hv of the photon spectral distribution, are obtained directly as weighted integrals of the Kα yields over the variable Ez (the ionization energy of the K shell of the element with atomic number Z), without needing any explicit reconstruction of the spectral distribution. The set of Kα yields produced by an x-ray beam as a function of Ez is a functional description of the exciting beam. Theoretically, such a description is suited to x-ray fluorescence analysis.

Notes: The Cd(II) and Hg(II) complexes of 4(1H)-quinazolinone-2,3-dihydro-2-thioxo (1) and the free ligand were studied by 1D and 2D multinuclear magnetic resonance in solution and 13C cross polarization magic angle spinning NMR in the solid state. Compound 1 adopts only one of five possible tautomeric structures in solution, namely the thiouracyl-like structure. It was found that the metal atom is linked to two molecules of deprotonated 1 by N-1 and coordinated by the sulphur atom. The compounds retain the same structure in the solid state and in dimethyl sulphoxide solution.

Notes: Samples of essential oil from Colombian ylang-ylang trees were analyzed by means of HRGC, HRGC-MS, IR and 1H- and 13C-NMR. 57 components were detected, 51 of which were positively identified. Camphene and anethol were identified in ylang-ylang essential oil for the first time. Among the composition-determining variables studied (extraction time, part of the flower, and flower freshness), the extraction time and the flower condition (fresh versus dry) were found to have the largest incidence in the quality of the essential oil.

Notes: Some N-BH3, N-BF3, N+-CH3 and N+-H imidazole derivatives have been prepared and their 13C, 11B and 1H NMR spectra studied. The effect of the different substituents was analysed. The isolobal character of the N-BH3 and N-CH3 derivatives is reflected in their spectra. In the 13C—H coupled spectra of N-borane adducts, the hydrides appear to be coupled with the heterocyclic carbon atoms. The C-4 chemical shift value is indicative of the nature of the N-substitution: lone pair (128-130 ppm), BH3 (126-128 ppm), BF3 and [CH3]+ (122-124 ppm) or [H]+ (117-119 ppm). The latter values allowed the chemical shifts of frozen imidazole to be estimated: 128 ppm for C-4 and 117 for C-5.

Notes: 1H two-dimensional NMR experiments on nickel(II)-substituted azurin have been successfully applied. Despite the short relaxation times of the hyperfine-shifted resonances, the combined use of NOESY and COSY spectra allowed the assignment of 15 resonances belonging to the metal-coordinated residues Gly-45, His-46, His-117 and Met-121. Even in the case of the two broad and furthest downfield resonances, the NOESY spectra were successful in assigning these signals to the β-CH2 protons of Cys-112. The protons of the non-coordinated residues Met-13, Phe-15 and Trp-48 were also assigned via NOESY, COSY and TOCSY experiments.

Description: The patterning of the imaginal discs in Drosophila melanogaster is a progressive process that, like the patterning of the larval epidermis during embryogenesis, requires the activity of segment polarity genes. One segment polarity gene, wingless, encodes a homolog of the mouse proto-oncogene Wnt-1 and plays a prominent role in the patterning of the larval epidermis and the imaginal discs. However, whereas the function of wingless in the embryo is initially associated with a pattern of stripes along the anteroposterior axis that are part of a Cartesian coordinate system, it is shown here that during imaginal development wingless is associated with a pattern of sectors that provide references for a polar coordinate system homologous to that postulated in a well-known model for the regeneration of insect and vertebrate limbs.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Couso, J P -- Bate, M -- Martinez-Arias, A -- Wellcome Trust/United Kingdom -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1993 Jan 22;259(5094):484-9.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Department of Zoology, University of Cambridge, United Kingdom.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8424170" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉
