Description: Although ordinary chondrite material dominates meteorite falls, the identification of a main-belt asteroid source has remained elusive. From a new survey of more than 80 small main-belt asteroids comes the discovery of one having a visible and near-infrared reflectance spectrum similar to L6 and LL6 ordinary chondrite meteorites. Asteroid 3628 BoZnemcova has an estimated diameter of 7 kilometers and is located in the vicinity of the 3:1 Jovian resonance, a predicted meteorite source region. Although the discovery of a spectral match may indicate the existence of ordinary chondrite material within the main asteroid belt, the paucity of such detections remains an unresolved problem.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Binzel, R P -- Xu, S -- Bus, S J -- Skrutskie, M F -- Meyer, M R -- Knezek, P -- Barker, E S -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1993 Dec 3;262(5139):1541-3.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17829382" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Although many T cells carry two in-frame V alpha rearrangements, the products of both V alpha rearrangements have never been shown simultaneously on the surface of normal cells. With the use of monoclonal antibodies to V alpha 2, V alpha 12, and V alpha 24, up to one-third of mature T cells expressed two V alpha chains as part of two functional and independent T cell receptors (TCRs). Thus, the "one cell, one receptor" rule does not apply to a large subset of alpha beta T cells. Cells that belong to this dual TCR subset may be specific for a broader range of antigens than cells with a single receptor, which may be important for autoimmunity and alloreactivity.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Padovan, E -- Casorati, G -- Dellabona, P -- Meyer, S -- Brockhaus, M -- Lanzavecchia, A -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1993 Oct 15;262(5132):422-4.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Basel Institute for Immunology, Switzerland.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8211163" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: The chiral fullerene C(76) was kinetically resolved by asymmetric osmylation providing an example of an optically active allotrope of a pure element. C(76) recovered from the treatment of racemic C(76) with OsO(4) and a chiral alkaloid ligand, showed a specific rotation [alpha](D) of -4000 degrees (〉 97 percent enantiomeric excess) and a circular dichroism spectrum corresponding to the ultraviolet spectrum. Regenerated C(76) formed by reducing the asymmetrically osmylated C(76) with SnCl(2) was enriched in the opposite enantiomer. Analysis of the local curvature of the C(76) molecule indicated that OsO(4) should selectively add to 2 of the 30 types of bonds in C(76). This regioselectivity was supported chromatographically and interpreted in terms of the kinetic resolution.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Hawkins, J M -- Meyer, A -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1993 Jun 25;260(5116):1918-20.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17836722" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: The development of leaders and colleges with the vision and ability to create an environment for both short- and long-term responses to societal concerns will be critical for the survival of these LGCAs. They will need help in escaping from old ideas, which means escaping from old organizations built on the past. A new sponsoring organization is needed to aid in this effort. With a new intellectual foundation, and the future firmly in mind, then and only then should a new national organization be instituted.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Meyer, J H -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1993 May 14;260(5110):881-1007.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17818375" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉
