Notes: The Russian wheat aphid (RWA), Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko), poses a serious threat to wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) production in many parts of the world. This research was initiated to evaluate wheat accessions for detection of resistance to the RWA. Over 12,000 wheat cultivars and plant introductions (PIs) from the USDA-ARS National Small Grains Collection were evaluated for reaction to RWA feeding damage. Twenty-nine PIs from Iran, Afghanistan, and the former Soviet Union, of various agronomic backgrounds were identified as having moderate to high levels of RWA resistance. This information is useful to wheat breeders searching for sources of resistance to the RWA to incorporate into their breeding programmes.

Notes: Site-directed mutations involving selected amino acids of Escherichia coli single-stranded DNA-binding protein (SSB) were tested for their in vivo functionality when introduced into a chromosomal ssb deletion strain on a plasmid. All mutants complemented the ssb deletion for viability when present on a pSC101 derivative. The generation time with ssbW54S doubled in comparison to the ssb* control, and both the ssbW54S- and ssbH55K-containing strains exhibited temperature sensitivity. ssbH55K, ssbW54S, ssbW88T, and ssbH55Y (ssb-1) strains displayed reduced survival to ultraviolet irradiation, while ssbW40T and ssbF60L strains were comparable to the ssb+ control strain. This study represents the first investigation of the in vivo properties of ssb mutations constructed for in vitro analysis of DNA binding by SSB.

Notes: . A simple method is developed that embeds an H-closed space as the remainder of an H-closed extension of a discrete space; one of the many generated extensions will have the same cardinality, weight, density, and character as the original space. Also, an example of an H-closed space (an extension of a discrete space) is constructed in which the number of H-closed subspaces is less than the number of H-sets.

Notes: The status of NMDA receptors in the brains of normal aged individuals and those with Alzheimer's disease was investigated. The binding of [3H]3-((±)-2-carboxypiperazin-4-yl)propyl phosphonic acid ([3H]CPP) to NMDA antagonist-preferring sites on frontal and temporal cortical synaptic membranes was assessed. Binding could be resolved into two components, one of high and the other of low affinity. Pharmacologically, the two sites were qualitatively similar. Considerable intersubject variation in binding parameters was detected, but no significant differences were found between the mean values for the control and Alzheimer's disease groups. This study indicates that, when changes in receptor integrity occur in individual patients, these may be occluded because of the large variations between individuals.

Notes: We examine dual classes of shares with identical dividends and liquidation treatment, but with different voting rights. We extend previous dud class studies by examining bid-ask adjusted prices and by examining returns after controlling for bid-ask spread and market value differences between voting classes. We establish that voting right differences, although related to price differences between superior and restricted voting shares, do not impact on average returns behavior. These findings are consistent with previously forwarded voting premium hypotheses.

Notes: Abstract Bordetella bronchiseptica grew from small inocula, and retained viability for at least 24 weeks, in unsupplemented lakewater or phosphate-buffered saline. From washed inocula of around 103 colony-forming units/ml, there was growth at both 10°C and 37°C to give 106–107 colony-forming units/ml. At 10°C, these counts were maintained with little diminution up to week 24 when observations ceased. In the tests at 37°C, two of three strains tested showed similar retention of viability. These results suggest that B. bronchiseptica may exist as hitherto unsuspected reservoirs of infection in freshwater habitats.

Notes: A polarity test mix consisting of acetophenone, N, N-dimethylaniline, naphthalene, decanoic acid, 2-naphthol, and n-tetracosane was spiked onto sand, and extracted with supercritical carbon dioxide, to evaluate the collection efficiency of various solvents and solvent mixtures. Nine single collection solvent systems and four mixed collection solvent systems were studied. When one-component collection solvents were employed, quantitative (above 90%) recovery of all analytes was not possible. With mixed collection solvents, recoveries of 90% or better with all analytes studied were possible.

Notes: The elastic deformation of polymer macromolecules in a shear field is used as the basis for quantitative predictions of viscoelastic flow effects in a polymer melt. Non-Newtonian viscosity, capillary end correction factor, maximum die swell, and die swell profile of a polymer melt are predicted by the model. All these effects can be reduced to generic master curves, which are independent of polymer type. Macromolecular deformation also influences the brittle failure strength of a processed polymer glass. The model gives simple and accurate estimates of practically important processing effects, and uses fitting parameters with the clear physical identity of viscoelastic constants, which follow well established trends with respect to changes in polymer composition or processing conditions.
