Notes: Concentrates extracted from a lateritic mineral deposit were analysed for their rare earth (RE) content by energy-dispersive x-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry. The L emission lines of the lanthanides were excited with the 22.1 keV Ag K radiation from an annular Cd-109 radioisotope source. The problem of the extensive overlap of the L lines were solved by the AXIL program for deconvolution of XRF spectra. Individual REs were quantified by preparing semi-transparent pellets of the concentrate with starch which served as dilutant and binder. This allowed correction for sample absorption with the light matrix program of the QXAS analysis package based on the fundamental parameter method. The method allowed the simultaneous determination of 12 rare earths contained in the sample, with a reproducibility of 2.0-29% and accuracy in the range 1.5-24% relative error without the use of standard materials. Detection limits achieved were in the range of 340 ppm for the heavy REs and 4000 ppm for the light REs.

Notes: Extracts from the seeds of Annona muricata yielded three new Annonaceous acetogenins: muricatetrocin A (= (5S)-3-{(2R)-2-hydroxy-9-{(2R,5S)-tetrahydro-5-[(1S,4S,5S)-1,4,5-trihydroxyheptadecyl]furan-2-yl}nonyl}-5-methylfuran-2(5H)-one; 1), muricatetrocin B (= (5S)-{(2R)-2-hydroxy-9-{(2S,5S)-tetrahydro-5-[(1S,4S,5S)-1,4,5-trihydroxyheptadecyl]furan-2-yl}nonyl}-5-methylfuran-2(5H)-one; 2), and gigantetrocin B (= (5S)-3-{(2R)-2-hydroxy-7-{(2S,5S)-tetrahydro-5-[(1S,4R,5R)-1,4,5-trihydroxynonadecyl]furan-2-yl}heptyl}-5-methyl-furan-2(5H)-one; 3). Their C-skeletons were deduced by mass spectrometry. Configurations were determined by 1H-NMR of ketal derivatives and 2D-NMR experiments utilizing Mosher esters. A previously described compound, gigantetrocin A (= (5S)-3-{(2R)-2-hydroxy-7-{(2S,5S)-tetrahydro-5-[(1S,4S,5S)-1,4,5-trihydroxynonadecyl]furan-2-yl}heptyl}-5-methylfuran-2-(5H)one; 4), was also isolated and is new to this species. Compounds 1-4 were all selectively cytotoxic for the HT-29 human colon-tumor cell line with potencies at least 10 times that of adriamycin.

Notes: The usefulness of the Kalman filter as an algorithm for calibration in a real system is shown. Results are compared with classical least squares and pure component calibration. The prediction of four priority pollutant chlorophenols in binary, ternary and quaternary mixtures was also carried out by Kalman filtering. The condition number, standard deviation and prediction error have been employed to choose the most suitable wavelength range. Comparison of the standard error of prediction in the validation set shows significant differences between the evaluated chlorophenols, the best results being obtained with Kalman multivariate calibration.

Notes: The addition of cosolvents to supercritical fluid (SCF) solvents can have large effects on solubilities, giving engineers the ability to tailor loadings and selectivities of solutes for difficult separations. It is necessary to have a better understanding of the special intermolecular interactions that occur in SCF solutions to predict the effects of cosolvents. We use a SCF chromatographic technique to acquire a database of cosolvent effects for a variety of cosolvents and solutes; examination of the cosolvent effects shows evidence of hydrogen bonding, charge transfer complex formation, and dipole-dipole coupling between solute and cosolvent molecules. SCF solvents, carbon dioxide, ethane, and fluoroform, are compared, and then the use of the chromatograph to measure solubilities is discussed.

Notes: The flow field inside an orifice flowmeter with a beta ratio of 0.50 operating at a Reynolds number of 91,100 has been studied using a three-color, 3-D laser Doppler anemometer system. Mean velocity measurements show large radial velocities leading into the orifice, the fluid separating from the orifice plate at the throat, the presence of a vena contracta farther downstream, flow reattachment to the pipe wall 5.3 pipe radii (R) downstream, the presence of a small upstream recirculation zone, and both a primary and secondary recirculation zone downstream of the orifice plate. The static wall pressure distribution attains a minimum pressure at 1.5 R, which does not coincide with the location of the vena contracta (0.75 R). Distributions of the entire Reynolds stress tensor are presented along with calculated values of turbulence kinetic energy, turbulence kinetic energy production, vorticity, and turbulence induced accelerations. These data are analyzed to interpret the complex turbulent flow field.

Notes: A polarity test mix consisting of acetophenone, N, N-dimethylaniline, naphthalene, decanoic acid, 2-naphthol, and n-tetracosane was spiked onto sand, and extracted with supercritical carbon dioxide, to evaluate the collection efficiency of various solvents and solvent mixtures. Nine single collection solvent systems and four mixed collection solvent systems were studied. When one-component collection solvents were employed, quantitative (above 90%) recovery of all analytes was not possible. With mixed collection solvents, recoveries of 90% or better with all analytes studied were possible.

Notes: The gas-phase reactions of propene and cyclopropane radical cations with neutral ethylene were investigated by using Fourier transform, chemical ionization and tandem mass spectrometries. Both reactions form covalent C5H10 adduct ions. The adduct ions are hypothesized to form initially as distonic radical cations that isomerize via a substituted cyclopropane intermediate and are detected as the most stable C5H10 isomer, the 2-methylbut-2-ene radical cation. The rate constant for each reaction is approximately 20% of the theoretical collision rate, indicating that product ions are formed in one out of every five collisions of the C3H6 radical cations with neutral C2H4.

Notes: Water sorption in epoxy based materials was analyzed by dielectric spectroscopy using remote sensors. A method to determine diffusion coefficients from the changes in permittivity during water absorption is proposed and was verified experimentally by comparison with standard water gain measurements. Although the technique is limited by electrode polarization phenomena, it is sensitive to the presence of water molecules and is capable of detecting different levels of water concentration as a function of frequency. The utilization of remote sensors demonstrated the capability of dielectric analysis to be applied both in the laboratory environment, and on a larger scale, as a nondestructive technique for monitoring environmental changes in actual polymer matrix composite parts.

Notes: Semi-interpenetrating networks have been produced from castor oil and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET). Bond interchange between PET and castor oil plays a major role in the development of initial miscibility, also affecting morphology and chemical structure. Microheterogeneous morphology is developed for materials of intermediate composition, which have much greater toughness than the polymers from which they were made.
