    Notes: An important step in the solution of non-linear deformation problems using a Newton-Raphson type of iterative scheme is the calculation of a tangent operator (the so-called Jacobian) by linearizing the involved field equations. In this paper, full linearization of the virtual work equation is performed in an updated Lagrangian framework together with a calculation of the consistent linearized material moduli. To update the material state, a material frame indifferent two parameter integration scheme introduced earlier by the authors is used. In general, the reference configuration is updated after each iteration to coincide instantaneously with the present guess of the unknown equilibrium configuration. Another approach is to use the previous equilibrium state (at the beginning of a time step) as the reference configuration until the new equilibrium configuration at the end of the time step is found. The present paper explores the performance of two different Jacobians based on the above two approaches, with emphasis on their accuracy and convergence characteristics when large incremental steps are used. Finally, some details of their finite element implementation are given and results for several numerical tests including upset forging and extrusion of an axisymmetric billet are presented and discussed.

    Notes: A refined model is presented for the linear transient dynamic and damping analysis of laminated anisotropic composite plates. Experimental measurements of specific damping capacity of unidirectional composite beams are used to predict the specific damping capacity of laminated composite plates in various modes of vibration. A finite element idealization is adopted, and the quadratic Lagrangian element is used together with selective/reduced integration. A viscous damping approximation is then employed to calculate the damped transient response of laminated plates. The effects of transverse shear deformation, symmetry condition, boundary conditions, anisotropy, aspect ratio, fibre orientation and the lamination scheme on specific damping capacity and damped transient response are investigated. Realistic examples illustrate the importance of these parameters. The present results agree very closely with experimental results available in the literature and can serve as a benchmark for future comparison by other investigators.

    Notes: A numerical procedure which integrates optimization, finite element analysis and automatic finite element mesh generation is developed for solving a two-dimensional inverse/parameter estimation problem in solid mechanics. The problem consists of determining the location and size of a circular inclusion in a finite matrix and the elastic material properties of the inclusion and the matrix. Traction and displacement boundary conditions sufficient for solving a direct problem are applied to the boundary of the domain. In addition, displacements are measured at discrete points on the part of the boundary where the tractions are prescribed. The inverse problem is solved using a modified Levenberg-Marquardt method to match the measured displacements to a finite element model solution which depends on the unknown parameters. Numerical experiments are presented to show how different factors in the problem and the solution procedure influence the accuracy of the estimated parameters.

    Notes: A two parameter family of incrementally objective integration schemes is proposed for the analysis of a broad range of unified rate-dependent viscoplastic constitutive models in large deformation problems. A similar scheme can be applied to rate-independent solids as well. These algorithms are a generalization of the mid-point integration rule. Full linearization of the principle of virtual work is performed in an updated Lagrangian framework together with a calculation of the consistent linearized moduli. Some details of the finite element implementation are given for plane strain and axisymmetric problems. The method is compared with other objective integration schemes and is tested with several examples where large strains and rotations occur.
