Notes: The dependence of the Kβ/Kα ratio on the chemical constitution of the x-ray emitting atom of 3d-shell elements. V, Cr, Mn and Fe, was studied employing a high-resolution Si(Li) detector. A maximum deviation of 9% in the Kβ/Kα ratio for the elements V and Mn is found when compared with their respective compounds. The experimental results are found to be consistent with the theoretical values due to Brunner's model.

Notes: Poly(vinyl alcohol) films were polarized at different electrical field strengths and temperatures. The peak temperature of the TSDC spectra shifted to higher values with increasing polarizing field strength and polarizing temperature. The activation energies and relaxation parameters of the process were evaluated. Based on the results, the origin of TSDC was attributed to space charge polarization with some contribution of dipole orientation.

Notes: Unsteady axial mixing due to addition of a batch of sodium chloride solution at the top of a water-filled tube (2.63 cm i.d.) has been studied by measuring the developing concentration profile and the advancing front with dye added to the brine. Data have also been obtained with added baffle plates, with the use of a viscous aqueous solution, and in smaller diameter (1.48, 1.91 cm) tubes. Results can be approximately correlated by means of a model based on unsteady one-dimensional turbulent dispersion. Laminar flow affects the behavior of the advancing front at which the salt concentration is lowest.

Notes: A framework is developed to describe kinetics and column dynamics of ad(de)sorption from bulk liquid mixtures using surface excess as the variable to quantify the extent of adsorption. It is found that the transient rate of change of surface excess with time from a multicomponent liquid mixture can be expressed in terms of a surface excess linear-driving-force model. A local-equilibrium model can be developed to describe the column dynamics of ad(de)sorption from liquid mixtures. Both self-sharpening and proportionate pattern mass-transfer zones can be formed depending on the shape of the surface-excess isotherm and the selectivity of adsorption. Analysis of column dynamics for liquid mixture adsorption can be carried out analogous to that for adsorption from gas mixtures, when a constant pattern mass-transfer zone is formed. The length of the mass-transfer zone and the composition-time column effluent profile can also be derived analytically for such a case. Experimental kinetics and column dynamics data for ad(de)sorption of ethanol-water mixtures on a large-pore activated carbon are analyzed using these models.

Notes: This study focuses on the effects of the reducing agents, dithiothreitol (DTT) and glutathione (GSH), on amino acid production in aerobically growing Corynebacterium glutamicum. The problem of reducing agent addition affecting the dissolved oxygen level was solved by positioning the culture at a high dissolved oxygen level and feeding the reducing agent into the fermentor. We show that it is possible to lower the redox potential even in a highly aerobic environment. The addition of DTT to the fermentation during the growth phase caused a significant increase in specific amino acid production rate and total amino acids produced, as compared with a control. In contrast, GSH had an inhibitory effect. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Runaway behaviour of exothermic reactions in a batch reactor has been studied experimentally on the example of acetic anhydride hydrolysis catalyzed by sulphuric acid, in a 700 ml batch reactor. High parametric senstivities of peak reactor temperature with respect to initial reactor temperature and catalyst concentration were obtained.

Notes: Runaway behaviour of an exothermic reaction in a semibatch reactor was studied experimentally on the example of hydrolysis of acetic anhydride catalyzed by sulphuric acid, in a 700 cm3 thinwalled stainless steel stirred reactor, 10.2 cm in diameter and 13.0 cm high. The reactor was partially immersed, to a depth of 2.1 cm, in a thermostatic bath, in order to obtain sufficiently rapid cooling of its contents. A reaction run was performed by first introducing water, acetic acid and sulphuric acid into the reactor. After the contents attained bath temperature, acetic anhydride at room temperature was fed to the reactor for a fixed time period, at a constant flow rate. When water was present in excess of the stoichiometric requirement and addition of acetic anhydride completed before the reactor attained peak temperature, the system showed sensitivity to coolant temperature and sulphuric acid concentration. When the reactants were present in stoichiometric quantities and addition of acetic anhydride was completed after the reactor attained peak temperature, the system did not exhibit any significant parametric sensitivity.

Notes: An analytical procedure, developed to simulate the graphic method for the design of vessels subjected to external pressure or vacuum, suggested by the ASME Code, Section VIII, Division 1, is presented in this contribution. A comprehensive computer program based on this method is also presented. The program also covers the design of stiffener rings. The procedure can be easily extended to include other international standards such as the British and German codes, since the method is based on the concept of the number of lobes at collapse. The method produced reproducible results over the entire range of L/D0 and D0/t ratios of the code. The deviation observed at any point in this range is less than 0.5% for factor A. The variation in allowable pressure is less than 2%.
