    Description: A compositionally based classification scheme for chondrules is proposed that will help in systematizing the wealth of data available and disentangling the effects of nebular and subsequent processes. The classification is not by texture or the composition of a single phase, or a mixture of these two, but rather is a comprehensive, systematic approach which uses the composition of the two main chondrule components. This scheme is applicable to over 95 percent of the chondrules and is easily applied using an electron microprobe. It stresses the original diversity of the chondrules and the complex yet facile way in which they respond to parent-body metamorphism. Results using this classification scheme suggest that arguments against an important role of chondrules in determining the compositional trends of the chondrites have been premature.

    Description: Spectral reflectances were measured for the canopies of Pinus elliottii seedlings that were inoculated versus noninoculated with the ectomycorrhizal fungus Pisolithus tinctorius. Reflectances of the less vigorous, noninoculated seedlings increased substantially at visible and near-IR wavelengths compared to the more vigorous, inoculated seedlings. An algorithm was developed to indicate the spectral regions in which reflectance was most sensitive to ectomycorrhizae. The reflectance curve of the more vigorous seedlings was used as a standard of comparison. The spectral regions defined by this algorithm are denoted as regions of maximum reflectance sensitivity. Far-red and near-IR photography filtered to the region of maximum sensitivity (700 nm) were used to enable visualization of a 'blue shift' reflectance response to decreased vigor in the noninoculated seedlings in response to these differences of mycorrhizal development.

    Description: Changes in leaf reflectance as water content decreases have been hypothesized to occur in the 1.55-1.75 and 2.08-2.35 micron wavelength regions. To evaluate this hypothesis, studies were conducted on ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) and oats (Avena sativa L.), which were grown in a controlled, outdoor situation. Both fully-watered control beds and water-stressed beds were periodically examined with a spectroradiometer calibrated against a reflectance reference of polytetrafluoroethylene. The observed changes correspond to those predicted by stochastic leaf models employed by other investigators (leaf reflection increases in the 1.55-1.75 micron region as leaf water content decreases). Although the percentage changes in TM bands 1-3 are nearly as great as those found in TM bands 5 and 7, the absolute values of reflectance change are much lower. It is believed that these patterns are probably characteristic of a broad range of vegetation types. In terms of phenomena detection, these patterns should be considered in any practical remote sensing sensor scenario.

    Description: Results of natural thermoluminescence (TL) measurements of 302 meteorites from the vicinity of the Lewis Cliff in the Beardmore region of Antarctica are presented in order to identify fragments of a single fall and to elucidate ice sheet movements and the mechanisms by which meteorite concentration occurs at this site. From the distribution of meteorites on the ice, the shape of the fields of 'paired' meteorites, and trends in the natural TL data, it is inferred that there is a western component to the movement of the ice at this location, as well as the previously supposed movement to the north. The western vector explains the concentration of meteorites along the western edge of the ice tongue. These new natural TL data identify several recent falls and several meteorites which probably had unusually small perihelia immediately prior to capture by the earth.

    Description: Whether many of the 10,000 meteorites collected in the Antarctic are unlike those falling elsewhere is contentious. The Antarctic H chondrites, one of the major classes of stony meteorites, include a number of individuals with higher induced thermoluminescence peak temperatures than observed among non-Antarctic H chondrites. The proportion of such individuals decreases with the mean terrestrial age of the meteorites at the various ice fields. These H chondrites have cosmic-ray exposure ages of about 8 million years, experienced little cosmic-ray shielding, and suffered rapid postmetamorphic cooling. Breakup of the H chondrite parent body, 8 million years ago, may have produced two types of material with different size distributions and thermal histories. The smaller objects reached earth more rapidly through more rapid orbital evolution.

    Description: The cathodoluminescence (CL) characteristics of eight type-3 ordinary chondrites and one L5 chondrite were investigated with particular emphasis on detailed compositions of the relevant phases in four of these chondrites: Semarkona (type-3.0); Krymka (3.1); Allan Hills A77214 (3.5); and Dhajala (3.8). By sorting the chondrules into eight groups according to the CL of mesostasis and to certain compositional criteria and by determining the number of chondrules in these groups as a function of petrological type, it was possible to deduce genetic/evolutionary sequences of the chondrules. It is shown that there are major compositional differences in chondrules, which account for their CL properties and the chondrule groups.

    Notes: Various morphological aspects of in vivo egg maturation and sperm - egg interaction were investigated in the Australian marsupial Sminthopsis crassicaudata with the transmission and scanning electron microscopes. Cortical granules invariably occurred in primary oocytes, with the number increasing after resumption of the first meiotic division. They generally occurred close to the oolemma, including the region near the oocyte nucleus. After mating, spermatozoa with intact acrosomes, which had a homogeneous electron-dense matrix, were found on the outer zona surface, but loss of acrosomal contents had occurred by the time of zona penetration. Sperm incorporation into the egg took place at the metaphase II stage of meiosis, and, at this time, cortical granules disappeared from the egg cortex. Sperm heads with condensed chromatin in the egg cytoplasm had an electron-dense layer of subacrosomal material over part of the dorsal nuclear surface, but no membranes were present around these incorporated spermatozoa. Sperm chromatin decondensation resulted in an elevation of egg cytoplasm, and the cell membrane over this area lacked microvilli. The pronuclear envelope was not laid down until after chromatin decondensation had occurred. By this time the fertilized egg had reached the uterus, and a smooth, electron-dense, shell membrane had been deposited. These observations, together with our previous findings, indicate that some of the processes of sperm - egg interaction are similar to those in eutherian mammals, whereas others appear highly divergent.

    Description: Of particular relevance to the subject of this workshop is the expected size and velocity distribution of the interplanetary projectiles during the late stages of planet formation. This will in turn be determined by the evolution of these distributions throughout the planet forming process. Even at this early stage of understanding, it seems clear that assumption of simple power-law mass distributions are certain to lead to incorrect conclusions. Furthermore, the lunar cratering evidence, valuable as it is for relatively late (i.e., less than 4.2 b.y.) events, cannot provide information regarding stochastic events of potentially moon-destroying energy expected to be experienced by the early Earth. The early stages of terrestrial planet formation are discussed in more detail.

    Description: The paper presents results of a wide-ranging isotopic investigation of the the Antarctic angrite LEW-86010 (LEW), and reassesses the type angrite Angra dos Reis (ADOR) in order to obtain precise radiometric ages and initial Sr isotopic compositions, and to search for the erstwhile presence of the short-lived nuclei Sm-146 and Al-26 via their daughter products. The isotopic compositions of Sm, U, Ca, and Ti were measured to allow a detailed appraisal to be made of the relations between, and the geneology of, these two angrites. LEW proves to be severely contaminated with modern terrestrial Pb, which is shown to result from terrestrial weathering. Concordant Pb-Pb model ages of pyroxene separates are obtained; uranium isotopic compositions are normal within error. Overall, striking age and isotopic similarities between LEW and ADOR were found, suggesting almost simultaneous production on the same asteroid, even though recent experimental studies imply that the two are not comagmatic.

    Description: Visual photometry and methane-band imaging indicate that Neptune underwent a period of atmospheric activity in the 1986-1989 period with an enhancement of 8900 A CH4-band brightness and an increased standard deviation of the mean yearly magnitudes at visual and near-IR wavelengths. These observations are presently interpreted as due to a localized upwelling source that could be similar to the 'great white spots' that have been periodically observed on Saturn.
