Summary In the present paper we consider finite plane deformations of a cantilever beam composed of an ideal fibre-reinforced material with its fibres aligned along the beam. The beam is deformed by a point force acting on its end face. It is assumed that the point force does not change its magnitude or direction during the deformation so that it is a “dead load”. Several new kinematically admissible solutions are obtained and minimum energy methods are used to obtain their ranges of validity.
