Notes: Flash laser heating using short-pulsed laser irradiation of a surface is demonstrated to be a promising new approach for effective removal of particulate contaminations of sizes as small as 0.1 μm. This is very useful because micron- and submicron-sized particulates adhere tenaciously onto a solid surface, and conventional cleaning techniques are inadequate for removal. Several varieties of the new laser-cleaning techniques have been developed by us as well as by others. For example, the pulsed laser irradiation can be used with or without the simultaneous deposition of a thin liquid film on the surface to be laser cleaned. The laser wavelength can also be chosen so that absorption occurs mainly at the sample surface, or in the liquid, or in the particulate, or in a combination of these. In this paper, we discuss and compare examples of these different approaches. We find that laser cleaning with highest efficiency is achieved by choosing a laser wavelength that is strongly absorbed by the surface together with pulse depositing a water film of thickness on the order of microns on the surface momentarily before the pulsed laser irradiation. This permits the effective removal of particles smaller than ∼20 μm, down to as small as 0.1 μm, from a solid surface using a modest ultraviolet laser fluence of ∼0.1 J/cm2.

Notes: A reanalysis of most of the existing data bearing on the strength of the S–F bond in SF6 does not support the generally accepted value of BDE(SF5–F)=390.8±15.1 kJ mol−1 at 298 K. Instead, a new value of BDE(SF5–F)=420±10 kJ mol−1 at 298 K is shown to be compatible with all the existing data. This conclusion is based on a critical examination of earlier shock-tube data on the thermal decomposition of SF6, recent measurements of the rate constant for the reverse reaction, F+SF5, various experiments on ion thermodynamics and photoionization energetics, and studies of the chemiluminescent reactions of Ca and Sr atoms. As a consequence of the present analysis, we find that the rate expressions for SF6 decomposition and the reverse combination rate expressions (at the high pressure limit) are k(SF6→SF5+F)=1.7×1022(1/T)1.9 exp(−50 800/T)s−1, k(SF5+F→SF6)=1×10−11(T/300)−1 cm3 molecule−1 s−1 and the step-size down for collisions of argon with SF6, in the temperature range 1700–2000 K, is about 400 cm−1. We are also able to derive a new value for the appearance energy of SF+5 from SF6 of 14.0 eV, and a new value for ΔfH(SF4)=−746±12 kJ mol−1.

Notes: Using the Gaussian-2 (G2) theoretical procedure, we have examined the molecular structures and total energies for CH2SH, CH2S−, CH3S−, CH2SH−, CH3SH−, CH3+, and CH3SH+. Contrary to the relative stabilities of CH3S+(C3v;3A2) and CH2SH+(Cs;1A'), the methylthio radical CH3S(Cs;2A') and the methylthio anion CH3S−(C3v;1A1) are predicted to be more stable than the mercaptomethyl radical CH2SH(C1;2A) and the mercaptomethyl anion CH2SH−(Cs;1A') by 9.2 and 38.0 kcal/mol, respectively. The CH2SH−(Cs;1A') anion may exist in the cis configuration or the less stable trans structure. Combined with the results of previous G2 calculations, this calculation yields predictions for the adiabatic ionization energies (IE) of CH3 (9.79 eV), CH2SH (7.41 eV), and CH3SH (9.55 eV), which are in accord with the experimental IEs of 9.84 eV for CH3, 7.536±0.003 eV for CH2SH, and 9.440 eV for CH3SH. The G2 values for the adiabatic electron affinities (EA) of CH2S, CH2SH to trans-CH2SH−(Cs;1A'), CH2SH to cis-CH2SH−(Cs;1A'), and CH3S are 0.38, 0.52, 0.61, and 1.86 eV, respectively. The EA(G2)'s of CH2S and CH3S also agree with the respective experimental values of 0.465±0.023, and 1.861±0.004 eV. We find that CH3SH− is unstable with respect to the electron detachment channel CH3SH+e−.

Notes: The 5f1→6d1 absorption spectrum of 231Pa4+ diluted in a single crystal of Cs2ZrCl6 has been measured at 4.2 K. Three bands corresponding to the 6d(Γ8g, Γ7g, and Γ'8g ) levels are assigned. Extensive vibronic structure has been observed for the lowest 5f→6d transition and this structure is compared to that recently reported for the 6d1→5f1 emission spectra in the same system.

Notes: We show for the first time the use of pulsed photoacoustic detection using a miniature piezoelectric transducer to study and monitor photoablation in air by an ultraviolet KrF excimer laser. At incident laser fluences below the ablation threshold, the photoacoustic signal is produced by the thermal expansion of the air near the irradiated surface ("thermal-piston signal'') and propagates at the speed of sound. Above the ablation threshold, the photoacoustic signal contains an additional component due to the ejection of ablated materials ("ablative-piston signal''); this propagates initially at supersonic speeds. The amplitude of the ablative-piston signal is found to be a monotonic function of the etch-depth per pulse. Hence, by accumulating the amplitude of the ablative acoustic pulse, the total etch depth can be monitored in real time.

Notes: The temperature dependence of the optical constants for amorphous silicon (a-Si) is studied for two different sample thicknesses at two infrared wavelengths. It is observed that the extinction coefficient of a-Si can increase significantly with temperature in the strong absorption regime. In addition, using the Mott–Davis formula, results are obtained for the variation of the optical gap energy for a-Si with temperature, with similar feature observed for both amorphous and crystal silicon.
