    Notizen: Abstract In this paper we define wheel matrices and characterize some properties of matrices that are perfect but not balanced. A consequence of our results is that if a matrixA is perfect then we can construct a polynomial number of submatricesA I,⋯,A n ofA such thatA is balanced if and only if all the submatricesA 1,⋯,A n ofA are perfect. This implies that if the problem of testing perfection is polynomially solvable, then so is the problem of testing balancedness.

    Notizen: Abstract We report for the first time the determination of the real part of the third order nonlinear susceptibilitiesχ (3) (−ω, ω, 0, 0) in the isotropic phase of two nematic liquid crystalsp-(ethoxybenzylidine)-p-butylaniline (EBBA) andp-(methoxybenzylidene)-p-butylaniline (MBBA) from electrooptic Kerr effect experiments. The highest value ofχ (3) observed near nematic-to-isotropic transition temperature, at 632.8 nm is found to be 1.067×10−20 m2V−2 for EBBA and 6.602×10−20 m2V−2 for MBBA.

    Notizen: Abstract The nonlinear optical response of four laser-active dyes (Pyridine 1, DCM, Pyridine 2 and Styryl 9) is reported at a wavelength of 532 nm. The dyes show phase conjugate reflectivities in the 5 to 85% range. Polarization discrimination experiments and comparison with the Caro-Gower model suggests thermal origin of the nonlinearity.

    Notizen: Abstract 27Al and29Si MAS NMR studies of various ZSM-5 zeolites of different Si/Al ratio, crystal size synthesized with and without alkali metal salt addition by the hydrothermal technique were carried out. The NMR observations clearly showed that the technique can be employed to differentiate Si/Al ratio, framework tetrahedral content and the crystal size. The last observation has been confirmed by SEM and catalytic activity test for para ethylation of ethylbenzene. A good correlation was found between the catalytic activity and the data from NMR and SEM.

    Notizen: Abstract This article reports an investigation into part-input methods for an implemented flexible flow system (FFS). Two new dynamic methods—look-ahead simulation and a fuzzy heuristic rule base—are compared to three simple myopic static sequencing rules and one dynamic rule. It is shown using simulation that for the existing system, the best sequence generated from the minimum production set performs very well, but the dynamic methods outperform the sequence when the system is modified and the sequence is unaltered. It is concluded that for a stable FFS, the static determination of the best input sequence is appropriate, but that a rapidly changing FFS—due to machine breakdown, changes in production requirements, etc.—may benefit from a dynamic part-input method. The look-ahead simulation outperforms the fuzzy rule base, and appears to be a more promising dynamic method. Suggestions for future research and evaluation are given.

    Notizen: Abstract Expansion for the difference of mean absolute deviations from the sample mean and the population mean is derived. This result is used to obtain strong representations for mean absolute deviations from the sample mean and the sample median. Edgeworth expansions for some scale invariant statistics involving the mean absolute deviations are studied. These expansions are shown to be valid in spite of the presence of a lattice variable.

    Notizen: Abstract In situ Mössbauer and EXAFS investigations have shown that the reduction of iron in the monometallic Fe/SiO2 catalyst is only partial, the reduction being mostly to a ferrous silicate phase. In the bimetallic Fe-Ru/SiO2 catalysts, the proportion of the FeRu alloy formed on reduction increases markedly with the increase in Ru content; clearly, Ru significantly enhances the reduction of iron on SiO2. In the Ru-rich compositions (Ru/Fe 1.0), most of the iron is present in the alloy phase and there is no segregation of α-Fe. A comparative study of the different supports has shown that γ-Al2O3 and SiO2 interact with iron strongly at low reduction temperatures while the TiO2 support interacts at higher temperatures. The presence of traces of Fe3+ often found in reduced Fe-Ru catalysts is shown to arise from the oxidation of fine segregated iron particles on the support.

    Notizen: Abstract Metal complexes of divalent cobalt, nickel and copper and trivalent iron were synthesized usingN-salicylidene-3-aminocoumarin as chelating agent. The ligand behaves as a monobasic ONO donor towards Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) and as an ON as well as an ONO donor towards Fe(III). All the complexes haven been proposed to have octahedral geometry on the basis of analytical, thermal conductivity, spectral and magnetic data. The complexes have been screened againstSpodoptera litura;F (Lepidoptera: noctuiidae) for antifeeding and insect-growth-regulating activity. The results show appreciable insect-growth-regulating activity associated with metal complexation.
