Notes: Silicon germanium (Si1−xGex) alloys have been grown by the floating zone method with x varying from 0.5 to 20 wt %. Resistivity and Hall effect measurements have been carried out in the temperature range 80–410 K. The Hall mobility has been found to decrease with Ge concentration varying between 0.5 and 4.5 wt % and thereafter an increase has been observed. The Hall mobility has also been found to decrease with an increase in temperature in these alloys following the AT−y relation, where A is a constant and T is the temperature in K.

Notes: Data are presented on a single-frequency, diode-pumped, microcavity YCeAG:Nd laser. The maximum output power was 45 mW in continuous operation, limited by the available pump power of 250 mW. The output was single-frequency, TEM00 at all powers. The lasing frequency was continuously temperature-tunable over a range greater than 180 GHz, with a stability of better than 10 MHz.

Notes: SHADOW is the ray-tracing program of choice for the synchrotron radiation community. The program can raytrace essentially any x-ray optical system and predict image shapes and intensities with great accuracy. Several new extensions have been included. The optical database has been extended to the 10-eV region by inclusion of the new data from the Center for X-ray Optics, Lawrence Berkeley Lab. Two major physical models have been added to the code; the first being a surface roughness model to add to the error surface option. The second addition is to the crystal model. It now includes an asymmetric crystal, a model of a mosaic crystal, and a model for the Johannson case of a figured, bent crystal. Until now, SHADOW has operated under Digital Equipment Corporation's (DEC) VMS operating system (VMS). The advent of powerful RISC workstations has prompted a porting to the UNIX environment, opening a multiplatform operability. So far, the code has been validated for Ultrix (DEC) and is undergoing beta testing for Sun operating system and IBM Corporation's AIX operating system. Porting to a 386/486 platform is also considered. Finally, an optimization algorithm based on a combination of the Simplex and simulated annealing is being implemented.

Notes: Two populations of common bean, Phaseolus vulgaris L., were used to make three independent location-specific selections at Palmira, Quilichao, and Popayán, Colombia. Also, three across-location selections were made by alternating generations between Palmira and Popayan, between Quilichao and Popayán, and among Palmira, Quilichao, and Popayán. The seven highest yielding lines selected from each environment and population along with 14 parents and two checks were evaluated for seed yield, seed weight, maturity, and reaction to an-thracnose, angular leaf spot, and common bacterial blight. Mean squares due to evaluation and selection environments, selected lines, and their interactions were significant for all traits. Mean yields of selected lines were higher than the mean of parents in both populations. Among location-specific selections, lines yielded higher at their respective selection site. Moreover, selections made at Popayán were higher yielding than those made at Quilichao or Palmira when tested across locations and years. Use of Popayán, a relatively wetter and cooler site, either alone or in combination with other locations resulted in higher yield, higher seed weight, and higher resistance to anthracnose. On the average, location-specific selections were lower yielding than the across-location selections. Among across-location selections, those selected between Palmira and Popayán were the highest yielding in both populations. Selections at Palmira and across all three locations resulted in greater stability.

Notes: ‘BJ 104’ was the most widely grown pearl millet hybrid in India until it became susceptible to downy mildew (DM) in 1984—85. Residual variability for resistance was found in both parental lines, 5141 B (maintainer of 5141 A) and J 104, and through four generations of pedigree selection under intense disease pressure in the DM nursery, two lines, IC-MA841 (from 5141 B) and ICMP 84814 (from J 104), were selected resulting in a reconstituted DM resistant hybrid (‘ICMH 84814’) which was equal in yield to the original ‘BJ 104’. The reconstituted hybrid, though phenotypically similar, can be distinguished from “BJ 104” being slightly taller, flowers later, has heavier heads, and 1000-seed weight, but tillers less.A similar exercise was attempted on Tifton 23 B, the female parent of the first widely grown hybrid (‘HB 3’— the male parent was also J 104), but no variability for resistance to DM was found.

Notes: The indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) concentration in leaves and stamens of the normal and a temperature-sensitive male sterile ‘stamenless-2′ (sl-2/sl-2) mutant of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.), grown under three temperature conditions, was measured by gas chromatography — mass spectrometry — selected ion monitoring (GC-MS-SIM) and by enzyme-linked immunosorbant assay (ELISA). At low (LTR, 18°C day/15°C night), intermediate (ITR, 23°C day/18°C night), and high temperatures (HTR, 28°C day/23°C night), the mutant leaves had approximately 10 to 20 times higher IAA concentrations, respectively, than the normal leaves under these temperature regimes. Similarly, the stamens of mutant flowers had approximately five and eight times higher IAA concentration at ITR and HTR, respectively, than the normal flowers. In the low temperature reverted mutant stamens, however, the level of IAA was similar to that in normal stamens. Also, with an increase in temperature, there was an increase in the level of IAA in the leaves and stamens of mutant plants. However, different temperatures had no appreciable effect on the IAA content of leaves and stamens of normal plants. It is suggested that the high IAA content in leaves and stamens of the stamenless-2 mutant is one of the factors associated with male sterility and carpellization of stamens in this mutant.

Notes: Abstract Methyl mercury uptake in free cells and different immobilizates of the cyanobacteriumNostoc calcicola has been examined. The general growth of the immobilized cyanobacterial cells could be negatively correlated with methyl mercury uptake. Alginate spheres proved most efficient in terms of uptake rate (0.48 nmol mg protein−1 min−1, 10 min) and total bioaccumulation (10.71 nmol mg protein−1, 1 h) with a bioconcentration factor of 3.3×103. Alginate biofilms showed a faster methyl mercury accumulation rate (0.83 nmol mg protein−1 min−1, 10 min) with a saturation of 10.28 nmol mg protein−1 reached within only 30 min (bioconcentration factor, 3.1×103). Foam preparations with a slow initial uptake approximated biofilms but were characterized by a lower bioconcentration factor (2.8×103). Free cells, in comparison, maintained the initial slow rate of uptake (0.62 nmol mg protein−1 min−1, 10 min), saturating at 30 min (8.81 nmol mg protein−1), and the resultant lowest bioconcentration factor (2.7×103). Cell ageing (30 days) brought a drastic reduction (3-fold) in organomercury uptake by free cells while alginate spheres maintained the same potential. Foam preparations of the same age showed a significant improvement in methyl mercury uptake followed by only a marginal decline in alginate biofilms. Data are discussed in the light of the physiological efficiency and longevity of immobilized cells.

Notes: Abstract Toxicological responses of the filamentous N2-fixing cyanobacteriumNostoc calcicola Bréb. towards Hg2+ were studied to enumerate the decisive lethal events. In low-dose, long-term experiments (0.05–0.25 μm Hg2+, 10 days), photoautotrophic growth was severely inhibited with concurrent loss of photosynthetic pigments (phycocyanin〉chlorophyll α〉carotenoids) and nucleic acids. The termination of growth after a day 4 exposure to 0.25 μm Hg2+ has been attributed to the complete inhibition ofin vivo photosynthetic activity in the cyanobacterium (O2 evolution〉14CO2 incorporation). The elevated Hg2+ concentrations irreversibly damaged the cell membrance as observed under light microscopy, and as indicated by the leakage of intracellular electrolytes and phycocyanin. In high-dose, short-term experiments (0.5–20.0 μm Hg2+, up to 6 h), thein vivo activities of selected enzymes (glutamine synthetase 〉 nitrate reductase 〉 nitrogenase) were less inhibited by Hg2+ than the uptake of nutrient ions (NH 4 + 〉NO 3 − 〉PO 4 3− ).
