Notizen: Much organizational restructuring, at least in the UK and USA, seeks to replace organizational regulation by that of the market. These developments centre around an emphasis on relations with customers - the ‘sovereign consumer’- as a paradigm for effective forms of organizational relations; they are apparent in, and underpin, a wide variety of organizational developments: just-in-time, total quality management, culture change programmes.Understanding these developments requires consideration of the discourse of enterprise of which the culture of the (internal) customer constitutes a key element. Defining internal organizational relations ‘as if’they were customer/supplier relations means replacing bureaucratic regulation and stability with the constant uncertainties of the market, and thus requiring enterprise from employees. This discourse has fundamental implications for management attempts to define working practices and relations and, ultimately, has impact on the conduct and identities of employees.Understanding these developments is not possible if analysis remains at the level of the organization. It requires that organizational restructurings, and the discourse which supports them, be located within the social and political rationality of enterprise. The certainties of management, the conviction that environmental challenge and competitive threat must be met by the cult[ure] of the customer, are due to managements’largely unquestioned acceptance of the normality and perceived good sense of the discourse of enterprise.

Notizen: The effect of removing heavy metal ions (copper, zinc, lead, and cadmium) with a polymeric heavy metal absorbent (PHMA) on metamorphosis of Penueus chinensis Osbeck was investigated. There was a significant (P 〈 0.05) reduction in metamorphosis of protozoea to mysis at concentrations more than 31.0 μg/L copper, 38.3 μg/L zinc, 32.5 μg/L lead, and 30.3 μg/L cadmium, in the absence of PHMA. At concentrations more than 61.0 μg /L copper, 68.3 μg/L zinc, 62.5 μg/L lead, and 60.3 μg/L cadmium there was a significant (P 〈 0.01) interaction between the absence and the presence of PHMA for metamorphosis of mysis to postlarvae. At concentrations of 12.3 μg/L copper, 45.8 μg/L zinc, 106.2 μg/L lead, and 200.2 μg/L cadmium, the metamorphosis of protozoea to mysis was blocked, but it was 51.4% in the presence of PHMA. At concentrations of 252.3 μg/L copper, 335.8 μ/L zinc, 806.2 μg/L lead and 300.2 μg/L cadmium, the metamorphosis of mysis to postlarvae was stopped, but it was 51.0% in the presence of PHMA. The toxicity of copper, zinc, lead, and cadmium to P. chinensis was reduced with PHMA.

Notizen: Axisymmetric notched bars with notch roots of large and small radius were tested under large strain cyclic loading. The main attention is focused on the fracture behaviour of steels having cycles to failure within the range 1-100. Our study shows that a gradual transition from a static ductile nature to one of fatigue cleavage can be observed and characterized by the Coffin-Manson formula in a generalized form. Both the triaxial tensile stress within the central region of specimens and static damage caused by the first increasing load have effects on the final failure event. A generalized cyclic strain range parameter δε is proposed as a measure of the numerous factors affecting behaviour. Fractographs are presented to illustrate the behaviour reported in the paper.

Notizen: Dilatational plastic equations, which can include the effects of ductile damage, are derived based on the equivalency in expressions for dissipated plastic work. Void damage developed internally at the large-strain stage is represented by an effective continuum being strain-softened and plastically dilated. Accumulation of this local damage leads to progressive failure in materials. With regard to this microstructural background, the constitutive parameters included for characterizing material behaviour have the sense of internal variables. They are not able to be determined explicitly by macroscopic testing but rather through computer simulation of experimental curves and data. Application of this constitutive model to mode-I cracking examples demonstrates that a huge strain concentration accompanied by a substantial drop of stress does occur near the crack tip. Eventually, crack propagation is simulated by using finite elements in computations. Two numerical examples show good accordance with experimental data. The whole procedure of study serves as a justification of the constitutive formulation proposed in the text.

Notizen: Abstract In Azotobacter chroococcum the hydrogenase structural genes (hupSL) cover about 2.8 kb of a 15-kb region associated with hydrogen-uptake (Hup) activity. Two other genes in this region, hupD and hupE, were located 8.9 kb downstream of hupL and were shown to be essential for hydrogenase activity by insertion mutagenesis. A fragment of DNA beginning 3.4 kb dowstream of hupL was able to complement the hupE mutant, supporting earlier evidence for a promoter downstream of hupSL. Hybridization experiments showed that hupD and hupE share some similarity with a region of Alcaligenes eutrophus DNA which is apparently involved in the formation of catalytically active hydrogenase. The hupD gene encodes a 379-amino acid, 41.4-kDa polypeptide while hupE codes for a 341-amino acid, 36.1-kDa product. The predicted amino acid sequences of the hupD and hupE genes are homologous to the Escherichia coli hypD and hypE gene products, respectively. A polar mutation in hupD had no effect on β-galactosidase activity in a strain also carrying a hupL-lacZ fusion, indicating that hupD and hupE are probably not involved in regulating hydrogenase structural gene expression.

Notizen: Abstract Many fungi in the centre of the group of Fusarium and its teleomorphs were shown to be capable of reducing nitrite anaerobically to form nitric oxide (NO), nitrous oxide (N2O), and/or dinitrogen (N2). Several strains could reduce nitrate as well. Nitrous oxide was the major product of the reduction of nitrate or nitrite. Several fungi could also form N2. When [15]nitrite was used as substrate for the N2-forming dinitrification, 15N2O, 15NO, and 14N15N were obtained as the products. These results demonstrated that, unexpectedly, many fungi have denitrifying abilities. It was also shown that the fungal system contains a unique reaction, formation of a hybrid dinitrogen.

Notizen: Abstract Nitrogen compounds such as azide, salicylhydroxamic acid, and possibly ammonium ions were converted to nitrous oxide (N2O) or dinitrogen (N2) by Fusarium oxysporum under denitrifying conditions. Nitrogen atoms in these compounds were combined with another nitrogen atom from nitrite to form a hybrid N2O species. The fungus exhibited much higher converting activities as compared with similar reactions catalyzed by bacterial denitrifiers. We thus propose the phenomenon be called co-denitrification, which means that such nitrogen compounds are denitrified by the system induced by nitrite (or nitrate) but are incapable by themselves of inducing the denitrifying system.
