Notes: Abstract The extent to which concepts, memory, and planning are necessary to the simulation of intelligent behavior is a fundamental philosophical issue in Artificial Intelligence. An active and productive segement of the AI community has taken the position that multiple low-level agents, properly organized, can account for high-level behavior. Empirical research on these questions with fully operational systems has been restricted to mobile robots that do simple tasks. This paper recounts experiments with Hoyle, a system in a cerebral, rather than a physical, domain. The program learns to perform well and quickly, often outpacing its human creators at two-person, perfect information board games. Hoyle demonstrates that a surprising amount of intelligent behavior can be treated as if it were situation-determined, that often planning is unnecessary, and that the memory required to support this learning is minimal. Concepts, however, are crucial to this reactive program's ability to learn and perform.

Notes: Summary Thein vivo effects of 22-oxa-1α, 25 dihydroxyvitamin D3 (OCT), on bone mineral metabolism were investigated in normal male Sprague-Dawley rats. The rats were administered either vehicle (control), low-dose OCT (25 ng/100 g body weight), or high-dose OCT (250 ng/100 g body wt). High-dose OCT increased serum ionized calcium (P〈0.05) and decreased serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) (P〈0.05) at all time points and increased serum bone Gla protein on days 7 and 28 (P〈0.05) compared with controls. Lowdose OCT decreased serum PTH at all the time points (P〈0.05) compared with controls. Tibial bone histomorphometry showed no significant differences between the two doses of OCT and controls. We found that OCT has minimal direct effects on bone metabolism in normal male rats in contrast to 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D3. This property may be advantageous in the treatment with OCT of cell-proliferative diseases.

Notes: Summary It has been proposed that vertebral dimensions be used to objectively identify vertebral fractures, permitting standardization of methodology for comparisons between studies. In this report, we evaluate the ability of various vertebral dimensions and ratios to identify “abnormal” vertebrae. As no “gold standard” exists for prevalent vertebral fractures, we examined the ability of cross-sectional dimensions (at a single point in time) to detect fractured vertebrae that had been identified from changes in dimensions compared with previous radiographs. Theoretically, a cutoff of 3 SD below the mean will rarely misclassify normal vertebrae as fractured (specificity=99.9%). However, we found that this cutoff correctly identified only about 70% of the incident fractures. A less stringent criterion (2 SD below the mean; theoretical specificity=97.7%) identified about 85–90% of true fractures. Dividing by stature or other vertebral heights sometimes yielded marginal improvements in the ability of the anterior or posterior height dimensions to diagnose fractures. The results suggest that the true fracture prevalence may sometimes be substantially higher than suggested by cross-sectional vertebral measurements.

Notes: Abstract Fluorescently-labelled bacteria (FLB) were used to study the feeding strategies of a natural assemblage of estuarine protozoans and to examine whether the protozoan grazing could account for the in situ size structure of the bacterioplankton. The FLB, DTAF-stained enterococci, ranging in volume from 0.01 to 0.30 × 10−1 µm3, were added to a natural planktonic assemblage at a density of 5.5% of the natural bacterioplankton. Initial densities (individuals ml−1) were as follows: total natural bacteria, 2.2 × 106; FLB, 1.2 × 105; pigmented flagellates, 300; colorless flagellates, 250; and ciliates, 30. FLB consumption rates were determined by examining the contents of protozoan food vacuoles, and the long-term effect of grazing (over a period of 100 hours) was determined by monitoring the decline in the FLB density in experimental vessels. The average consumption rates of FLB by pigmented flagellates were similar to those by flagellates that lacked chloroplasts (0.9 and 0.6 FLB protozoan−1 hour−1, respectively). The ciliates consumed bacteria at an average rate that was 17-fold higher (per cell) than flagellates, and they displayed a greater preference for larger bacteria than did the flagellates. FLB of the mid-size classes (0.025–0.100 µm3) were heavily grazed by the entire protozoan assemblage; the smallest (〈0.025 µm3) and the largest (〉0.100 µm3) FLB escaped protozoan grazing. This had a profound effect on the resulting size distribution of FLB. At the end of a 100-hour incubation, the percentage of mid-size FLB (0.025 to 0.100 µm3) decreased 2.0–2.2-fold, while the percentage of the smallest and the largest FLB increased 2.0–2.5-fold. Resultant densities of FLB were consistent with initial clearance rates determined for the protozoan groups. The grazing rates of protozoans on FLB were species-specific; whereas some species consumed FLB, others did not demonstrate bacterivory. The results suggest that protozoan grazing has a major effect on the size distribution of coastal bacterioplankton. By selectively feeding on a particular size-class of bacteria, planktonic ciliates may consume 15–90% day−1 of the standing stock of largest size classes of bacterioplankton. Thus, ciliates, which were present in low abundance in the field, could not balance the production of the entire bacterial community, but they may strongly influence the portion of the bacterial community represented by the largest bacterial class. The direct effect of flagellates (e.g., grazing) was limited to smaller bacteria.

Notes: Abstract We present quantitative calculations for the static structure and the dynamics of quantum liquid films on a translationally invariant substrate. The excitation spectrum is calculated by solving the equations of motion for time-dependent one- and two-body densities. We find significant corrections to the Feynman spectrum for the phonon-like collective excitations.

Notes: Abstract Transport and metabolism of radiolabeled indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) were studied in midrib sections of Cleopatra mandarin (Citrus reticulata Blanco) and compared to that of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA). Exogenous IBA was metabolized by the midribs to a polar compound, probably an ester conjugate. Ethylene pretreatment of the midribs reduced their capacity to metabolize IBA by ca. 70% as compared to air pretreatment. IBA transport capacity in the leaf midribs was ca. two times greater in the basipetal direction than the acropetal. The basipetal transport capacity of 3H-IBA was lower than that of 14C-IAA (ca. 24% and 39% of the uptake, respectively). While ethylene treatment reduced basipetal transport of IAA by ca. 70% it did not affect the transport of IBA. Most of the transported label was found as free IBA, but the reduction of IBA conjugation by ethylene treatment did not affect the transport capacity.

Notes: Abstract An extreme ultraviolet (EUV) imaging spectrograph for the wavelength range from 235 to 450 Å has been developed and used for high resolution observations of the Sun. The instrument incorporates a glancing incidence Wolter Type II Telescope and a near-normal incidence toroidal grating spectrograph to achieve near-stigmatic performance over this spectral range. The design of the spectrograph entrance aperture enables both stigmatic spectra with spectral resolution adequate to observe emission line profiles and spectroheliograms of restricted portions of the Sun to be obtained concurrently. In this paper we describe the design and performance of the instrument and provide an overview of results obtained during a sounding rocket flight on May 5, 1989.
