    Notes: Diphenylmethane-4,4′-diisocyanate based polyether polyurethane cationomers were synthesized using 3-trialkylammonium-(1,2-propanediol)iodide (TAPI) as the chain extender. The ionic content was varied by substituting up to 100% of 3-dialkylamino-1,2-propanediol (DAP) for TAPI. Cationomers with bromine and chlorine ions were prepared from the iodine-based polymer via ion exchange. The morphology and properties of the cationomers were studied as a function of alkyl group, ion content, and anion type using small-angle x-ray scattering, tensile testing, dynamic mechanical thermal analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry. The bulky side groups of DAP and TAPI prevented crystallization in the hard domains, and consequently little or no phase separation was evident in the unionized materials. Polyurethanes with cationic functionality showed dramatic improvements in phase separation and tensile properties. Results suggest tht while ionic interactions are the primary driving force for phase separation, they produce a morphology not typical of ionomers, but rather akin to that of a conventional polyurethane with semicrystalline hard segments. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Description: Laboratory test results of the initialization and tracking performance of an existing inertial-sensor-based instrument are given. The instrument, although not primarily designed for precision antenna pointing applications, demonstrated an on-average 10-hour tracking error of several millidegrees. The system-level instrument performance is shown by analysis to be sensor limited. Simulated instrument improvements show a tracking error of less than 1 mdeg, which would provide acceptable performance, i.e., low pointing loss, for the DSN 70-m antenna sub network, operating at Ka-band (1-cm wavelength).

    Description: The alignment and X-ray imaging performance of the Advanced X-ray Astrophysics Facility (AXAF) Verification Engineering Test Article-I (VETA-I) was measured by the VETA-I X-Ray Detection System (VXDS). The VXDS was based on the X-ray detection system utilized in the AXAF Technology Mirror Assembly (TMA) program, upgraded to meet the more stringent requirements of the VETA-I test program. The VXDS includes two types of X-ray detectors: (1) a High Resolution Imager (HRI) which provides X-ray imaging capabilities, and (2) sealed and flow proportional counters which, in conjunction with apertures of various types and precision translation stages, provide the most accurate measurement of VETA-I performance. Herein we give an overview of the VXDS hardware including X-ray detectors, translation stages, apertures, proportional counters and flow counter gas supply system and associated electronics. We also describe the installation of the VXDS into the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) X-Ray Calibration Facility (XRCF). We discuss in detail the design and performance of those elements of the VXDS which have not been discussed elsewhere; translation systems, flow counter gas supply system, apertures and thermal monitoring system.
