Notes: Abstract Distribution and accumulation of NO3—N, down to 210 cm depth, in the soil profile of a long term fertilizer experiment were studied after 16 cycles of cropping (maize-wheat-fodder cowpea). The application of fertilizer N without P and K or in combination with only P resulted in higher NO3—N concentration in the soil profile than the application of N with P and K. With an annual application of 320 kg N ha−1 alone, a peak in NO3—N accumulation occurred at 135 cm soil depth. However, with the application of NPK, no peak in NO3—N distribution was discernible and its content at most of the sampling depths was either less than or equal to N and NP treatments. The annual application of 10 tons farm yard manure (FYM) per ha along with NPK resulted in a relatively lower NO3—N content in the sub soil. The amount of NO3—N accumulation in the soil profile decreased as the cumulative N uptake by the crops increased. Application of fertilizer amounts greater than that of the recommended (100% NPK) resulted in low percent N recoveries in crops and greater NO3—N accumulation in the soil profile.

Notes: Copolycondensates have been prepared from carbazole, poly(N-vinylcarbazole) and various aromatic anhydrides, e.g., phthalic anhydride, trimellitic acid anhydride, pyromellitic dianhydride, naphthalene tetracarboxylic dianhydride, and benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride in presence of the Friedel-Crafts catalyst anhydrous zinc chloride at high temperature. The polymers have been characterized by elemental analyses and IR spectroscopy. Thermal stabilities, dielectric, and conductivity behaviors of these polymers have also been evaluated and it has been observed that these properties show interesting differences depending upon the nature of the anhydride.

Notes: Anthracene-mono- and disulfonyl derivatives of polystyrene and poly (N-vinylcarbazole) have been prepared and the thermal stability, dielectric, and conductivity of these polymer pendant sulfones have been evaluated. The anthracene-based benzene, naphthalene, anthracene, and biphenyl copolysulfones have also been prepared and characterized in regard to the above-cited properties. Interesting variations in these properties between these two classes of polymers carrying pendant and backbone sulfonyl groups have been noted and rationalised from structural considerations.

Description: Of the low energy (30-100 MeV/N)Fe-group nuclei of Galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) a fraction of about 20 percent of these are in partially ionized states. The origin of these particles are not known at present. From the considerations of relevant cross-sections, the following two important processes of the phenomena are given: (1) these GCR Fe-group nuclei must have captured the orbital electrons at energies of 1-5 MeV/N, while traversing matter; and (2) that these GCR ions of 1-5 MeV/N are then reaccelerated to energies of at least 30-100 MeV/N, most probably in the heliospheric boundary region. Three possible scenarios of the electron-capture processes are briefly discussed: (1) electron capture in a large molecular cloud; (2) GCR equilibrium spectra in ISM and their equilibrium charge; and (3) electron capture in the Oort's cloud.
