    Notes: Spontaneous mutation of some genes was studied in haploid adenine and leucine auxotrophic yeast Saccharomyces.It was shown that a decrease in the amount of adenine (from 500 to 0 mgl-1) or leucine (from 300 to 0·3 mgl-1) in the medium, simultaneously with the transition from repression to derepression of the biosynthesis of these metabolites, resulted in a 15- to 150-fold increase in the reversion rate of genes ade2 and leu2, respectively, for different strains. At the same time the mutation rate of suppressor genes varied relatively little (up to five-fold), and that of gene lys1 did not change at all. It was also demonstrated (on gene leu2) that the mutation rate is determined by the composition of the nutrient medium at the time of the S-phase of the cell cycle and it does not depend on the cultivation conditions during the presynthetic period.We discuss the hypothesis that derepressed genes mutate with a significantly higher rate than genes in the repressed state.

    Description: Thermal deformations and stresses were studied in a silicon-carbide/aluminum filamentary composite at temperatures up to 370 C (700 F). Longitudinal and transverse thermal strains were measured with strain gages and a dilatometer. An elastoplastic micromechanical analysis based on a one-dimensional rule-of-mixtures model and an axisymmetric two-material composite cylinder model was performed. It was established that beyond a critical temperature thermal strains become nonlinear with decreasing longitudinal and increasing transverse thermal-expansion coefficients. This behavior was attributed to the plastic stresses in the aluminum matrix above the critical temperature. An elastoplastic analysis of both micromechanical models was performed to determine the stress distributions and thermal deformation in the fiber and matrix of the composite. While only axial stresses can be determined by the rule-of-mixtures model, the complete triaxial state of stress is established by the composite cylinder model. Theoretical predictions for the two thermal-expansion coefficients were in satisfactory agreement with experimental results.

    Description: A computer program called UWCODA is presented. UWCODA is intended to assist in the design, analysis and optimization of composite plates. UWCODA combines a state-of-the-art global optimization algorithm (Improving Hit and Run) with classical lamination theory. Optimization results are presented for simple loading conditions as well as for complex, biaxial load conditions. The computer code proved to be very effective in the design of composite plates.

    Description: A 24-ply composite double cantilever-beam specimen under mode I (opening) loading has been analyzed by a 3D FEM code that calculated along a straight delamination starter for several different specimen materials. An isotropic specimen was found to have a strain-energy release rate distribution which varied along its delamination front due to the boundary-layer effect and another effect associated with the anticlastic curvature of the bent specimen arms. A 0-deg graphite-reinforced epoxy specimen had a nearly-uniform strain-energy release rate distribution which dropped only near the edge, due to the boundary-layer effect, and a +/- 45-deg graphite/epoxy specimen exhibited a pronounced strain-energy release rate variation across the specimen width.

    Description: The implementation of state variable-based viscoplasticity models is made in a general purpose finite element code for structural applications of metals deformed at elevated temperatures. Two constitutive models, Walker's and Robinson's models, are studied in conjunction with two implicit integration methods: the trapezoidal rule with Newton-Raphson iterations and an asymptotic integration algorithm. A comparison is made between the two integration methods, and the latter method appears to be computationally more appealing in terms of numerical accuracy and CPU time. However, in order to make the asymptotic algorithm robust, it is necessary to include a self adaptive scheme with subincremental step control and error checking of the Jacobian matrix at the integration points. Three examples are given to illustrate the numerical aspects of the integration methods tested.

    Description: Macroscopic homogeneity of a heterogeneous body is defined from various points of view. The applicability of the principle of Delesse to a single macroscopically homogeneous body is discussed. It is then seen that a function derived from a consideration of the area fraction of a phase can serve as a measure of clustering of particles of that phase.

    Description: A second derivative frequency modification procedure is developed to iteratively change analysis modeling parameters for the more rapid convergence of analytically determined frequencies to those obtained by structural dynamic testing. A nonlinear system of algebraic equations in the modeling parameters is derived and a rapidly converging iterative method for their solution is presented. Numerical results obtained show that the higher order formulation and nonlinear predictor-corrector solution procedure yields results which are more rapidly convergent than those obtained using only the usual linear first-order parameter modification procedure. The proposed higher order theory also connverges in some cases when the ordinary linear theory does not.

    Description: A general formulation of the equivalent domain integral (EDI) method for mixed mode fracture problems in cracked solids is presented. The method is discussed in the context of a 3-D finite element analysis. The J integral consists of two parts: the volume integral of the crack front potential over a torus enclosing the crack front and the crack surface integral due to the crack front potential plus the crack face loading. In mixed mode crack problems the total J integral is split into J sub I, J sub II, and J sub III representing the severity of the crack front in three modes of deformations. The direct and decomposition methods are used to separate the modes. These two methods were applied to several mixed mode fracture problems, were analyzed, and results were found to agree well with those available in the literature. The method lends itself to be used as a post-processing subroutine in a general purpose finite element program.
