Notes: Abstract The Pito Rift area is the site of actively deforming oceanic lithosphere that has been primarily under extension for at least the past million years, based on kinematic reconstructions. The major morphologic features, Pito Deep and Pito Seamount, are aligned toward the Euler pole for relative motion between the Easter and Nazca plates. SeaMARC II side-scan and bathymetry data indicate that there are two general modes of faulting currently active in the Pito Rift area. One is associated with incipient rifting of old (∼3 Ma) Nazca lithosphere by large NW-SE normal faults, and the other is associated with a broad area of right-lateral transform shear between the Nazca and Easter plates. This transform shear is distributed over a broad region because of the northward growth of the East Rift and parallel tectonic rifting within the Pito Rift area. The majority of the Pito Rift area is composed of preexisting blocks of Nazca plate that are back-tilted away from Pito Deep and strike perpendicular to present and previous relative plate motions. This observation suggests that block-faulting and back-tilting are the primary mechanisms responsible for the distributed lithospheric extension, in agreement with gravity and magnetic analyses (Martinez et al., this issue). The only recent volcanic flows observed in side-scan data are from the Pito Seamount area and to the outside of the outer pseudofault of the East Rift. The significance of the young flows near the outer pseudofault is not understood. We interpret the flows extending northwest from the Pito Seamount as representing a newly formed seafloor spreading axis within the Pito Rift area. Gravity and magnetic analyses (Martinez et al., this issue) together with SeaMARC II bathymetry and side-scan data support this interpretation. Based on the tectonic evolution of the Easter microplate, we propose an evolutionary model for the formation of the Pito Rift area, where new ‘tectonic’ grabens form immediately west of the previous graben and with slightly more counterclockwise orientation. The duration and history of tectonic activity for each graben are not well constrained.

Notes: Composition of Mixtures of Hydrocarbons after BIRCH-Reduction of Substituted Benzenes and Acid Catalyzed Addition of Alcohols to Alkylsubstituted Cyclohexenes and Cyclohexa-1,4-dienes.10 different benzene hydrocarbons 1, indane, tetraline, anisol and phenol are reduced by sodium in liquid ammonia in the presence of methanol to the BIRCH products 2. The product mixture compositions are determined through capillary GLC. On storage at + 6°C some rearomatization of the 1,4-cyclohexadienes 2 occurs. Data of the 1H- and 13C-n.m.r. spectra and also mass spectra of the BIRCH 1,4-dienes 2 are given. For comparison 4-alkoxycyclohexenes 4 and 1-alkoxy-1-methylcyclohexanes 8 are prepared and spectroscopically characterized. Acid-catalyzed addition of alcohols to the 1,4-cyclohexadiene systems is a slow process and gives the 4-alkoxy-4-alkylcyclohex-1-enes (4) only in moderate yields up to 30 %. Most of the products are dimers 5 and also oligomers 6 of the parent hydrocarbons 2.

Notes: Three Component Reactions. XX. Methoxymercuration of Cyclohexa-1,4-dienes.The methoxymercuration of several cyclohexa-1,4-dienes leads to insoluble mixtures of mono- and bismercuricompounds 2-4 and 5-7. After reduction with NaBH4/NaOH mixtures of methoxycyclohexenes and bismethoxycyclohexanes result. The result of capillary gaschromatographic analyses and n.m.r. spectra allow a semiquantitative evaluation of the reaction pathways.

Description: The results of a second year effort of a research program are presented. The research included development of methodology that provides probabilistic lifetime strength of aerospace materials via computational simulation. A probabilistic phenomenological constitutive relationship, in the form of a randomized multifactor interaction equation, is postulated for strength degradation of structural components of aerospace propulsion systems subjected to a number of effects of primitive variables. These primitive variables often originate in the environment and may include stress from loading, temperature, chemical, or radiation attack. This multifactor interaction constitutive equation is included in the computer program, PROMISS. Also included in the research is the development of methodology to calibrate the constitutive equation using actual experimental materials data together with the multiple linear regression of that data.
