    Notes: The analysis of the 1H and 19F NMR spectra of the corticosteroid fluocinonide and five related steroids is reported. The 500 MHz 1H NMR spectra revealed several previously undetected long-range 1H-19F coupling constants. These couplings were assigned by the application of the heteronuclear equivalent of the COSY pulse sequence. The fluorine substituent effects and long-range heteronuclear couplings were examined in relation to structures derived from molecular mechanics (MMX) calculations.

    Description: A solution procedure for solving nonlinear time-marching problems is presented. The nonsymmetric systems of equations arising from a Newton-type linearization of these time-marching problems are solved using an iterative strategy based on the generalized minimal residual (GMRES) algorithm. Matrix-free techniques leading to reduction in storage are presented. Incorporation of a linesearch algorithm in the Newton-GMRES scheme is discussed. An automatic time-increment control strategy is developed to increase the stability of the time-marching process. High-speed flow computations demonstrate the effectiveness of these algorithms.

    Description: A magnetic flux rope model is developed and used to determine whether the principal axis analysis (PAA) of magnetometer signatures from a single satellite pass is sufficient to obtain the magnetic topology of plasmoids. The model is also used to determine if plasmoid observations are best explained by the flux rope, closed loop, or large-amplitude wave picture. It was found that the principal axis directions is highly dependent on the satellite trajectory through the structure and, therefore, the PAA of magnetometer data from a single satellite pass is insufficient to differentiate between magnetic closed loop and flux rope models. Results also indicate that the flux rope model of plasmoid formation is well suited to unify the observations of various magnetic structures observed by ISEE 3.

    Description: Results are presented of the first ground-satellite correlation study of ion cyclotron wave events inside geosynchronous orbit. Several intervals are found during which waves at the same frequency were observed simultaneously by the DE 1 Goddard Space Flight Center Fluxgate Magnetometer and by the Air Force Geophysics Laboratory Magnetometer Network. This represents about 33 percent of the intervals during which waves were seen on the ground and DE 1 was in a favorable location (near the geomagnetic equator around L = 4.6) to observe the wave generation region. Three of seven simultaneous events showed a positive correlation when a detailed correlation analysis was performed. Peaks in the the cross-correlation function occurred at delays of 30-100 s and are interpreted as the group delay time of signals from space to the ground station. The small number of events seen in space during conjunction intervals results from the satellite's path missing the source region.
