    Description: It is noted, in the wake of the recent completion of a redshift survey of about 2300 IRAS galaxies with a characteristic depth of about 4000 km/sec, that the redshift distribution obtained is entirely consistent with that of the observed optical galaxies in the direction of the Great Attractor. The IRAS velocity field also qualitatively reproduces recent observations of the spiral and elliptical galaxies. Although it is not possible to rule out the existence of excess mass in the galactic plane in the direction of the Great Attractor, this is not needed to explain the observed peculiar velocities.

    Description: N-body simulations of a 'cold dark matter' universe are presently used to calibrate the accuracy, and assess the limitations, of the procedure previously employed to predict the velocity field within 8000 km/sec of the Local Group through the application of linear gravitational theory to a full-sky, flux-limited sample of IRAS galaxies. The rms difference between the one-dimensional acceleration and velocity of field particles is an increasing function of local density; linear theory can in this way account for all but one-sixth of kinetic energy. A series of artificial IRAS catalogs closely matching the real sample in space density and clustering amplitude is constructed. Velocity correlation functions are used to demonstrate that the predicted velocity fields are in good agreement with the true velocity fields on large scales.

    Description: Asteroids can lose angular momentum due to so called splash effect, the analog to the drain effect for cratering impacts. Numerical code with the splash effect incorporated was applied to study the simultaneous evolution of asteroid sized and spins. Results are presented on the spin changes of asteroids due to various physical effects that are incorporated in the described model. The goal was to understand the interplay between the evolution of sizes and spins over a wide and plausible range of model parameters. A single starting population was used both for size distribution and the spin distribution of asteroids and the changes in the spins were calculated over solar system history for different model parameters. It is shown that there is a strong coupling between the size and spin evolution, that the observed relative spindown of asteroids approximately 100 km diameter is likely to be the result of the angular momentum splash effect.

    Description: The Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) is an ESA cornerstone mission for infrared astronomy. Schedules for launch in 1993, its four scientific instruments will provide unprecedented sensitivity and spectral resolution at wavelengths which are inaccessible using ground-based techniques. One of these, the Long Wavelength Spectrometer (LWS), will operate in the 45 to 180 micron region (Emery et. al., 1985) and features two Fabry-Perot interferometers mounted on an interchange mechanism. The entire payload module of the spacecraft, comprising the 60 cm telescope and the four focal plane instruments, is maintained at 2 to 4 K by an onboard supply of liquid helium. The mechanical design and testing of the cryogenic interferometer and interchange mechanisms are described.

    Description: Three areas of possible commercialization involving robots at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) are discussed: a six degree-of-freedom target tracking system for remote umbilical operations; an intelligent torque sensing end effector for operating hand valves in hazardous locations; and an automatic radiator inspection device, a 13 by 65 foot robotic mechanism involving completely redundant motors, drives, and controls. Aspects concerning the first two innovations can be integrated to enable robots or teleoperators to perform tasks involving orientation and panal actuation operations that can be done with existing technology rather than waiting for telerobots to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) to perform 'smart' autonomous operations. The third robot involves the application of complete control hardware redundancy to enable performance of work over and near expensive Space Shuttle hardware. The consumer marketplace may wish to explore commercialization of similiar component redundancy techniques for applications when a robot would not normally be used because of reliability concerns.

    Description: We use a combination of analytical and numerical methods to study dynamical processes involved in the formation of planets and smaller bodies in the solar system. Our goal was to identify and understand critical processes and to link them in a numerical model of planetesimal accretion. We study effects of these processes by applying them in the context of the standard model of solar system formation, which involves accretion of the terrestrial planets and cores of the giant planet from small planetesimals. The principal focus of our research effort is the numerical simulation of accretion of a swarm of planetesimals into bodies of planetary size. Our computer code uses a Monte Carlo method to determine collisional interactions within the swarm. These interactions are not determined simply by a relative velocity, but rather by explicit distributions of keplerian orbital elements. The planetesimal swarm is divided into a number of zones in semimajor axis, which are allowed to interact. The present version of our code has the capability of following detailed distributions of size, eccentricity, and inclination in each zone.

    Description: An analytical model was constructed to predict the magnitude of stresses produced by rubbing a turbine blade against its tip seal. This model used a linearized approach to the problem, after a parametric study, found that the nonlinear effects were of insignificant magnitude. The important input parameters to the model were: the arc through which rubbing occurs, the turbine rotor speed, normal force exerted on the blade, and the rubbing coefficient of friction. Since it is not possible to exactly specify some of these parameters, values were entered into the model which bracket likely values. The form of the forcing function was another variable which was impossible to specify precisely, but the assumption of a half-sine wave with a period equal to the duration of the rub was taken as a realistic assumption. The analytical model predicted resonances between harmonics of the forcing function decomposition and known harmonics of the blade. Thus, it seemed probable that blade tip rubbing could be at least a contributor to the blade-cracking phenomenon. A full-scale, full-speed test conducted on the space shuttle main engine high pressure fuel turbopump Whirligig tester was conducted at speeds between 33,000 and 28,000 RPM to confirm analytical predictions.

    Description: A previously unrecognized effect is described in the derivation of luminosity functions and selection functions from existing redshift survey data, due to binning of quoted magnitudes and diameters. Corrections are made for this effect in the Center for Astrophysics (CfA) and Southern Sky (SSRS) Redshift Surveys. The correction makes subtle but systematic changes in the derived density fields of the CfA survey, especially within 2000 km/s of the Local Group. The effect on the density field of the SSRS survey is negligible.
