    Notes: The authors report time-resolved measurements of the emission of positive and negative charge from Si and Ge surfaces irradiated with 248-nm KrF excimer laser pulses. With pulse energies both below and above the melting threshold, the time evolution of the emission currents is complex and strikingly different for Si and Ge. The positive ion emission signal from Ge persists only for the duration of the laser pulse (〈60 ns), but in sharp contrast, the signal from Si continues for several microseconds. A tentative suggestion is made that the positive ions encounter a Knudsen layer created just above the surface of the Si target. More refined experiments, coupled with a theoretical effort, are proposed.

    Notes: A new operating mode has been discovered in transverse magnetoresistive (MR) memory cells which increases the usable nondestructive sense output by more than a factor of 4 over the original mode described, which employed a unipolar word field. The new mode allows for increased cell density, decreased memory access time, and increased margins. This new operating mode was examined experimentally and analytically for experimental cells ranging in size from 1.5×5 μm to 1.8×18 μm. The MR material used in the cells consisted of two 150-A(ring)-thick magnetic layers (65% Ni, 15% Fe, 20% Co) separated by a 50-A(ring)-thick reacted tantalum layer to break the exchange. In the new operating mode, a word field of one polarity is used for writing (parallel to the edge magnetization) and a reversed polarity is used for reading. During the reading process, 120°–225° paired "walls'' are formed at the edges. The energy in the walls is sufficient to restore the elements to their original states even if switching occurs (in a direction opposite to the normal rotation during writing). The operating margins are improved because while reading only one and not both the word field and the sense field are in a direction to cause normal switching.

    The role of the late Cimmerian unconformity for the distribution of kaolinite in the Gullfaks Field, northern North Sea (1990)

    Notes: A study of the Middle Jurassic Rannoch Formation in the Gullfaks Field shows that there is no relationship between the content and distribution of kaolinite and location relative to the late Cimmerian unconformity. From petrographic data most of the kaolinite is interpreted to be detrital, and only traces of authigenic kaolinite are observed. Mass-balance calculations are used to provide guidelines as to the likelihood of kaolinite being formed and preserved in sandstones under the unconformity. The result of the calculations shows that the propagation rate of the dissolution front in the sandstones was probably on average slower than the erosion rates during the formation of the late Cimmerian unconformity. Hence, transformation of significant amounts of feldspar and mica to kaolinite probably did not take place within the sandstones which at present underlie the unconformity in the Gullfaks Field. Periods of exposure during formation of unconformities may thus be less effective causes of kaolinitization in sandstones than has been assumed.

    Notes: Abstract Porphyromonas gingivalis culture supernate was found to induce hemotypic agglutination of human polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN). Pretreatment of PMN with P. gingivalis supernate inhibited both the rate and the degree of aglutination induced by the secretagogues PMA and FMLP. Lipopolysaccaharide from P. gingivalis upregulated the CR3 (Mac-1, CD11b) receptors of PMN. Treatment of glass-adherent PMN with P. gingivalis supernate did not alter their phagocytic capacity fot P. gingivalis cells but when PMN were treated in suspension the cells adhered less well to glass and phagocytosis of those PMN that did adhere was reduced. P. gingivalis supernate treatment of PMN induced lysozyme release but the amount released during phagocytosis when supernate was present did not change. Neither P. gingivalis supernate nor LPS were cytotoxic for PMN. The data suggest that P. gingivalis factors could interfere with PMN elimination of this organism at the site of infection by inappropriately stimulating PMN, depressing phagocytosis and causing enhanced CR3 expression. The consequent agglutinatin or enhanced adherence could also lead to decreased phagocytic capacity of the adherant or agglutinated cells.
